Coronavirus in Mexico, more lethal than in the US and China, with a mortality rate of 9.2 per 100 cases

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat
Attacks on medical workers by Mexicans fearing they spread the virus

On the 26th it appeared that Covis-19 was all was good and controlled in Mexico, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador who  assured that in Mexico, the covid-19 coronavirus epidemic has been " tamed" and instead of having it skyrocket like in other countries, it has maintained horizontal growth here. He maintained that in the country there is no overflow or saturation of hospitals, while reporting that there is still availability in up to 70 percent of intensive care beds with ventilators and specialists to care for infected patients.

He didn’t mention the lack of testing, or that those ventilators largely came from China and the U.S.

Facts are that the true number of cases and deaths in Mexico is unknown.  They have submitted less than optimal data to tracking sources such as John Hopkins.

Combined that with the numbers having variance from state and federal data.

According  to the feds; Currently, there are 19 entities in the country that have a higher rate than the national average, with Chihuahua, Guerrero and Morelos being the most striking cases, after registering a fatality percentage of 23, 18 and 15 percent, respectively.

Sending his famous hugs all around

“Here the growth has been horizontal and this has allowed us to prepare ourselves very well to have everything that is required of medical teams, the specialists”.

AMLO sent a fraternal and solidarity hug to the nurses and doctors in charge of caring for people with covid-1 9, and called them "our heroines and our heroes". He also offered hugs to the Mexicans who are in hospitals, taking care of their relatives, and a double hug to the relatives of those who have lost their lives due to this pandemic.

Assistance

The president also announced a program of aid for improvement and expansion of housing in marginalized neighborhoods for the benefit of between 60 and 70 thousand beneficiaries, regardless of housing loans and other welfare actions.

High fatality rate

Data reveals that Covid-19 is more deadly in Mexico than the United States, which has the world’s highest number of cases along with China where the coronavirus originated from a horseshoe bat and suspected the transmission was an accidental transfer in a Wuhan lab.

The mortality rate is 9.2 per 100 cases in Mexico.

However, until the end number of cases is known mortality rates will be higher than at the virus’ conclusion.

Testing is key.

Attacks on medical professionals in Mexico—fearing they spread the virus

MEXICO CITY —  Esther García was walking toward a bus stop after completing her shift when a young man approached her. Then he tossed a plastic bag filled with liquid at her.

The bag struck the left side of her head, splashing her face with its caustic contents — a mixture of water and bleach. The attacker ran off as Garcia felt burning in her eye and her vision went blurry.

“I was filled with fear,” she recalled. “I started to cry. I didn’t understand what was going on.”

This wasn’t a revenge attack, a crime of passion or some kind of message from Mexican organized crime.
García is a nurse at a public clinic outside Mexico City.

Health workers, especially nurses, have been targeted across the country in recent weeks by assailants accusing them of spreading coronavirus, according to health professionals and authorities.

Apart from being sprayed with bleach, they have faced verbal assaults, been denied seats in public transport and been blocked from entering their own communities.

“You are spreading COVID!” is a common slur.

Mexican authorities, including President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have condemned the mistreatment and stressed that it has been perpetrated by a scattered minority in a country where most citizens have lauded the workers on the front lines of the pandemic.

“It is truly outrageous that anyone would attack health personnel because of fear of COVID-19,” Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, who heads the government’s coronavirus-response team, tweeted this week. “They are here to protect us. Our total gratitude.”

In the southern state of Oaxaca, lawmakers passed a new statute mandating nine-year prison terms for assaults on medical professionals.

The medical workers are already risking their lives to care for COVID-19 victims. Across Mexico, doctors, nurses and others have staged protests against a lack of protective gear, supplies and medicines.

More than 500 health workers have already been infected, authorities say, and at least nine have died. Outbreaks have been reported in at least four public hospitals — in Tijuana, near Mexico City, in San José del Cabo and in Monclova, in the northern state of Coahuila.

The reports of infected health workers have left a stigma, stoking fears on social media and elsewhere that they are vectors of contagion.

In western Jalisco state, at least six nurses have been victimized, including one who, like García, was showered with water and bleach, according to the state nursing association there.

“As health workers we have confronted disinformation and panic — even physical and verbal aggression,” Edith Mújica, president of the group, told reporters.

“We are not enemies. … People should know that just because we are nurses that is not to say that we are contaminated.”

Across Mexico, townsfolk have thrown up “sanitary” roadblocks — staffed with self-styled health vigilantes — to prevent entry of outsiders and other potential virus carriers. The barriers have meant some health workers cannot get home, forcing them to move.

In one case, reported Mexico’s Reforma newspaper, residents denied a nurse entry to her neighborhood in the Pacific coast town of Bahía de Banderas, in western Nayarit state.

“We don’t deserve this,” the nurse, Melody Rodríguez Navarrete, said afterward. “We are not asking them to praise us, only that they understand that we are here to help them. It’s our work and everyone is taking the appropriate measures not only to avoid becoming infected, but to avoid infecting others.”

Along with outrage, the assaults on health workers have prompted considerable national soul-searching about the collective mentality behind such misguided behavior.

“The assaults demonstrate an accumulation of contradictions in our society,” columnist Javier Solórzano Zinser wrote Friday in La Razón newspaper. “Those who are being attacked put all their determination and knowledge into resolving problems, not into provoking them.”

Mexico is not alone in the disturbing phenomenon. Similar attacks against health workers have been reported in India and elsewhere, including the United States.

Traditionally, nurses and other health workers in Mexico have been figures of considerable respect. On crowded public buses and trains, people routinely give up seats to nurses in white uniforms and health workers in lab coats.

Now, to avoid drawing scrutiny, health-sector commuters are being advised to wear civilian garb on public transportation, and to change clothes at their workplaces. In some cases, authorities are arranging dedicated transport to shield workers from ill-treatment.

In Mexico City, unions representing transit workers and health employees this week launched a special bus service for employees at seven public hospitals.

“They are victims of attacks despite the fact that they are at the front lines of the battle,” Gerardo García, secretary-general of a health workers local, told Reforma.

In the case of Esther García, 46, who has been a nurse for 18 years, her vision returned to normal, but the bleach assault has left a legacy of fear and distrust.

She is a divorced single mother of two daughters, ages 19 and 17, whom she helps support on her nurse’s salary of about $700 a month. Like many fellow health workers, she cannot afford to leave her job.

“I don’t even want to think about what would have happened if they had a gun or some other weapon, instead of just bleach,” García said. “I feel very sad. … In this profession one recognizes that you run the risk of contagion of some illness. But I have never before felt fear that I would be attacked because I was a nurse.... Never before.”

Lopez Obrador made a comment to one of the news sites, that he has it under control, what a liar the infection and death rates keep rising, that the Chuy guy of TJ has not posted about it lately, unless something happened to him. Also thanks for the president acting late on it, the outcome is now foreseen.

If 100 people get sick in contra Y and 12 die, that’s a 12% CFR.

How is Milenio comparing the mortality in Mexico with China or the US?
If the widespread testing on the US has been all lies, starting with the imaginary tramendous availability of Testing for All announced 3 months after reports started advising the presidency of the imminent danger of an epidemy but put on the shoulders of governors without resources for fabrication or money to buy against competition of others including the federal government pushing for supplies of allies only?
The US will not have vaccines anytime soon, in spite of all their resources, there will be investigations, and a lot of blood and blame and guilty pleas "to lesser charges", but AMLO in Mexico like many other mexicans will still trust that all will be OK, may still be looking to understand what the hell happened, ot much else t ok do, after all the padt administrations were too busy stealing health care resources from the best of the best, ISSSTE, IMSS, AMLO's systema Nacional, cancer cures like distilled water sold by javier duarte or jaliska Big Pharma trying to sell governor alfaro's Miraculos BS at the biggest prices in the world.

  13. Intense fear and hopelessness, mixed with distrust of government (rightfully in corrupted Mexico) can create inflamatory rumors that will spread into panic.
Panics spreads like fire. They must be extinguished before getting out of control and destroys all.

This panic phenomenon is Biblical ... well known during wartimes, earthquakes, econoic collapse, and disease plagues like bubonic, typhus, smallpox, and AIDS...

Now the pandemic COVID 19 (Corona virus) is the world's latest catastrophe that can lead to panic states in places where people are extremely scared , distrustful of government and it's institutions , and in hopeless despair. It looks like places in Mexico are in such a status.

Given how I see things, look at the incidents of citizens attacking medical personnel as a "symptom" of nacent panic that can easily spread nationwide ... including into neighboring countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Hondurus, etc. Why not?

    Again, my main point here:

#1. people who throw bleach on nurses are a "symptoms" of people in panic mode. They have reached this state because of distrust in government, superstitions, mal-education, rumors, and hopelessness.

    2. The items in #1 are natural outcome of Mexico historically denying it's people basic truths. The Mexican government has refused for generations now to reveal what it knows of clandestin massa graves everywhere.. people just disappear..."Oh well, we don't need to count them..maybe they are emigrants in the USA, or Spain..? Government "transparancy"? Not in Mexico... let the people watch telenovelas ...

#3. Fatalism and Superstitions: Most poor countries have popuations of people who resort to fatalistic notions and superstitions because there is little else available. Rites, rituals, ceremonies to saints, spirits, gods, curanderos, totems, relics, candles, potions, abound among Mexico's poor. From the Virgin Mary to Santa Muerte; from votive candles in supermarkets, from holy water to tobacco smoke... the signs of fatalism and superstition abound in Mexican society. If you are poor and under-educated, why not!

I have a video on Mexican morgues with bodies rotting in big vans; of people complaining of the smells I have videos of the heroic "rastradorias" looking for clandestine grave on their own without govermenbt help. I have videos of mass demonstrations seeking to find disappeared loved ones.

No, dear reader, do NOT put all the blame on the bleach throwers ! They are just the canarios warning of an impending state of riotous mob rule ... and God knows what else?

Why wasnt it a pandemic in 2018? The economy is destroyed for less deaths then the flu...explain that. 20. The article is appreciated and timely. One wonders about statements such as "Mexico is not alone in the disturbing phenomenon. Similar attacks against health workers have been reported in India and elsewhere, including the United States." True; moreover, it is and should not lead to Mexicans discarding their ownership for an ever-hyper-violent society. Yes, I am Mexican, and I know that too many times Mexicans blame other factors for our own transgressions. In our arrogance, we often seek to compare our failings as natural when comparing to other societies, and we will never find our own societal harmony by such. 34. How ignorant can people be to the facts that AMLO is lying to the Mexican people? He doesn't have anything under control. The FACT that Mexico has the highest mortality rate for COVID-19 speaks for itself. The numbers of infected coming out are clearly under the actual number. Ignorance will raise the number of deaths and that's a shame. AMLO will be exposed for being an incompetent leader.

    1. 7:11 your incompetent cacayacas will expose you for being an ingorant novody, with one third the US popuulation, Mexico has about 300 000 people to infect, 40 000 to die and 100 00 suspects without symptoms.
There will not be 1+ trillion dollars to stimulate nobody's economy there.
