Coronavirus: and the beat goes on...and on...and on

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Mexico: 251 cases, 48 are new cases, 2 deaths. Includes: 35 cases in Mexico City, 4 in Jalisco, 4 Michoacán, 1 Campeche
A closer look at the stats since January 21:

Of the 351 deaths in the U.S. from coronavirus, 318 are from seven states,
Including: New York, 117 Washington State 95, California 30, Georgia 23, Louisiana 20, New Jersey 20, Florida 13.

The remaining 33 deaths are from 26 states.  All having single digits totals.

17 states have not reported deaths.

Puerto Rico reports 1 death
3.22.20

NOTE: Virus is not airborne, only transmitted by "respiratory droplets"  from a sneeze or cough.  These droplets do not hand in the air , hence the 6 foot distance recommendation.

Malaria Drug shows promise

Between early and mid-March, 20 patients were treated with 600 milligrams of hydroxychloroquine daily in a hospital setting. Depending on their symptoms, an antibiotic known as azithromycin was also added to the treatments. This antibiotic is known to be effective against complications from bacterial lung disease. Another 16 remaining patients were not given the drug as a control.

The results indicate a productive therapeutic remedy, that both shorten the life of the virus and the voracity.   By the administration removing the regulations normally imposed this brings the treatment in the hands of treating physicians.  This is called using a medication “off label.”   Additionally important, by lifting regulations  insurers will cover the cost.
Thousands cheer the Vive Latino festival in Mexico City, Saturday, March 14, 2020.
In this fluid story of the corona virus, I was asked to create a forum by which BB followers could ask questions and provide information.

I will give this a go and see what happens.  No political or unproven information will make the cut.

CHINA

As many of you know, my husband has been in China during this time. I have been commenting about the status of China.  He is fine, bored but fine.  He reports life returning to normal. Traffic, factory operations becoming normal.  It is still against regulations/law to go outdoors without a mask.

Speaking of masks.  Health professionals have said we don’t need them, but that view is changing..  It is more important to distance ourselves, and wash hands, was hands, wash hands. However those with underlying medical issues, autoimmune deficiency, heart, kidney problems, diabetes etc should wear a mask as well as  first responders and medical personnel.

If you have a need, wear N95.  Anything else is completely useless.

China claims production is now returned to 90%.  My husband says, based on his industry that it is more accurate at 70%. However, even a 70% number is positive.  Keep in mind, China also has massive AI manufacturing plants that operate 24/7…even in the dark.  That is something the U.S. must incorporate stateside to fortify American manufacturing.  It is not an option, or we will increase our dependency on China and India.

China has been building a global artificial intelligence empire, leaving everyone including the U.S. in its wake.  From farming to autos, and everything in between, they have gained tremendous dominance over the world.

We must not allow any nation to have the capability of holding the U.S. hostage because of our overwhelming reliance on their production of our medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.

PLEASE AVOID HOARDING

In China there are no depletion of household items and food.  Because citizens are not hoarding, but rather they are shopping as they normally do.  Medial masks are the exception.  But even those are now available.

My niece is an executive of a large food chain.  They are working double shifts.  They have ordered their market chains to open special hours for seniors only. Quite dilatory I say.  She does say in 2 weeks supplies will be back per normal.

To give you an idea how much over buying is occurring….a normal intake per day for markets are around 200k, during this crisis it is over a million.  Please think of the seniors living on the once a month SS checks, or single parents living paycheck to paycheck and others who can’t go out and drop 1 to 4 thousand on hoards that deplete the supply.
Cases spread across the country with concentrations in NY, California and Washington State
If you know someone in your life or a neighbor that may be affected, share, and help them.  I spent the last 2 days doing just that.   I buy on Amazon by subscription every 3 or 4 months and just rec a shipment when this happened.  Therefore I was in toilet paper, paper towel heaven, plus detergents, coffee, pasta, beans etc etc etc.  I have been sharing.

Drive through testing is now available.   If your doc orders one.

The early tests in other countries had a high percent of false positives.  The ones in the US have a high degree of accuracy and new ones have a turnaround time in hours.  By Trump opening the test development to private enterprise and cancelling old regulations, pharma and lab companies were able to respond quickly to the need.

Fear drives all things negative.  Calm down, don’t listen to social media, or even the news, I go to the source each day, to these websites:

MEXICO

Today Mexico is beginning to put in place restrictions. However AMLO said he did not feel the need for community distancing.  Just days ago a massive Vive Latino festival in Mexico City, was held on Saturday, March 14, 2020.

Mexico has no deaths from the virus as of today. Which is good news, as they are woefully underprepared to cope with the virus becoming  widespread. Their underfunded and failed health system would collapse quickly with a strain of widespread transmission.

Mexico has some private health systems and hospitals but mostly it is an universal healthcare system that is fragile and vulnerable, and financially weak.

MEDICATIONS

This week China has threatened to withhold ingredients the U.S. needs for the manufacturing of medications.  90% comes from China and India, mostly China.  A top level official says China can “Throw the U.S. into the sea of the coronavirus." (South China Morning Post)  President Trump was asked about this and he was firm in his answer “they will not do that”…as to say they don’t dare.   These nasty tidbits come from China president Xi’s surrogates.  But be assured the message comes from the top in a way to send a message or test the waters.

Trump met with insurance companies last week.  They and Medicare agreed to override usually scheduling so that people could get an “emergency” 3 month supply of meds.  Please assure that those most vulnerable in your life knows this.

Typically, insurance companies have a schedule of 30 to 90 days when you can renew.  For example for 30 day supply refills will not be approved before the 26th day.  Now however that will be waived.  I was able to get my aunts emergency supply yesterday.

Mexico City has 82 confirmed cases
If you are a senior with underlying medical issues you are most targeting by this virus.  The average age of death is high 70s.  If you are younger but have a medical issue you also are in danger.

I convinced my 89 yr old aunt to self-quarantine.  This after having to explain what the coronavirus is.   “I wondered what they were talking about”  (she refuses to wear her hearing aids) She is the second oldest of the Martínez Clan.  Make sure the elders in your life are watched and cared for.

Telehealth Excerpt:

Medicare coverage and payment of virtual services
Under President Trump’s leadership, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has broadened access to Medicare telehealth services so that beneficiaries can receive a wider range of services from their doctors without having to travel to a healthcare facility. These policy changes build on the regulatory flexibilities granted under the President’s emergency declaration. CMS is expanding this benefit on a temporary and emergency basis under the 1135 waiver authority and Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act. The benefits are part of the broader effort by CMS and the White House Task Force to ensure that all Americans – particularly those at high-risk of complications from the virus that causes the disease COVID-19  – are aware of easy-to-use, accessible benefits that can help keep them healthy while helping to contain the community spread of this virus.

Updated ICE statement on COVID-19

Statement attributable U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
ensure the welfare and safety of the general public as well as officers and agents in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will temporarily adjust its enforcement posture beginning today, March 18, 2020. ICE's highest priorities are to promote life-saving and public safety activities.
Consistent with its sensitive locations policy, during the COVID-19 crisis, ICE will not carry out enforcement operations at or near health care facilities, such as hospitals, doctors' offices, accredited health clinics, and emergent or urgent care facilities, except in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Individuals should not avoid seeking medical care because they fear civil immigration enforcement.  Last Reviewed/Updated: 03/18/2020

    1. Pretty sad that hoarders are making this situation a lot more difficult than it is specifically for senior citizens but they do it with the intention of making a profit resaling those products for very high price, it's only a matter of time before people start getting shot at not for the lack of food or house items but for the way these people are buying...

Wow! Tourism is way down and businesses depending on the are hurting bad.

      3. I wanted to give a bit of advice to people about something they may be over looking. Wipe down all groceries with a disinfecting wipe or a water and bleach solution either before or after you bring them into your home. Anyone could have sneezed on or touched your products. You are touching the outside of products and then putting food directly into your mouth. This is especially important for older people and people with compromised immune systems. Hopefully everything will be under control soon. Until then please take care of yourselves.

      4. Bala Plata, although that is good advice, keep in mind that viruses can't survive (technically they're not alive) on groceries for much more than 24 hours. They can only survive on live host that are compatible.

        Delete
      5. Health Organizations have announced repeatedly that this virus can survive on surfaces for up to 3 days. It lives the longest on polypropylene plastic and stainless steel. Just Google it.

        Delete
      6. @6:49

It depends what particular virus. Some viruses *may* live up to 3 days on stainless steel while others may not. Generally, outside a host they're virions - can still infect - (not viruses) and after that just a harmless chemical. It's important to note that viruses are not life and cannot survive much outside of a host.

Good job with doing you're own research, you're a budding scientist.

    14. The Epidemic of diabetes in America is a toxic mix with C19! Far more diabetics in America than China or iran and even italy! In 2018, 34.2 million Americans, or 10.5% of the population, had diabetes. Undiagnosed: Of the 34.2 million adults with diabetes, 26.8 million were diagnosed, and 7.3 million were undiagnosed.
Americans are such a healthy bunch! C19 kill rate will be higher than italy's 5 %! The International Diabetes Foundation (IDF), adds that when those with diabetes develop a viral infection of any kind (including COVID-19), it can be harder to treat for two reasons: The person's immune system is compromised, making it harder for their body to fight off the virus and can lead to a longer recovery period; and that viruses may thrive in environments with elevated blood glucose levels.

Those with diabetes also have heightened levels of inflammation throughout their bodies, which can put those with diabetes at a heightened risk as well, says Dr. Pena. "If you have a viral infection, that can turn into pneumonia easier, because diabetes itself is an inflammatory disease," she says. It's also important to note that, when a person has diabetes, episodes of stress, like a viral infection, can increase blood sugar levels, which can also lead to complications.

It also talked about how the restrictions put in place for the Swine Flu epidemic in 2009 caused a lot of financial damage.

I know that Mexico's caught between a pandemic and a bad economy, but given the Mexican government's characteristic lack of efficiency, I have trouble giving them the benefit of the doubt. It just seems like they're burying their heads in the sand.

    24. “There is so much fear, and perhaps rightfully so, about COVID-19.
      And, what if...
If we subscribe to the philosophy that life is always working out for us, that there is an intelligence far greater than humans at work...
      That all is interconnected.
      What if...
the virus is here to help us?
      To reset.
      To remember.
      What is truly important.
      Reconnecting with family and community.
Reducing travel so that the environment, the skies, the air, our lungs all get a break.
Parts of China are seeing blue sky and clouds for the first time in forever with the factories being shut down.
Working from home rather than commuting to work (less pollution, more personal time).
Reconnecting with family as there is more time at home.
An invitation to turn inwards -- a deep meditation -- rather than the usual extroverted going out to self-soothe.
To reconnect with self -- what is really important to me?
      A reset economically.
The working poor. The lack of healthcare access for over 30 million in the US. The need for paid sick leave.
How hard does one need to work to be able to live, to have a life outside of work?
And, washing our hands -- how did that become a "new" thing that we needed to remember. But, yes, we did.
The presence of Grace for all.
There is a shift underway in our society -- what if it is one that is favorable for us?
What if this virus is an ally in our evolution?
In our remembrance of what it means to be connected, humane, living a simpler life, to be less impactful/ more kind to our environment.
An offering from my heart this morning. Offered as another perspective. Another way of relating to this virus, this unfolding, this evolution.
It was time for a change, we all knew that.
      And, change has arrived.
      What if...

      5. @4:03 AM: I agree with your post about 90%.
I especially liked your point on the waste factor in making goods. Yes indeed, this has always been a problem and humans must minimized this to the lowest levels possible.

Of course, other huge factor is trash and junk polluting our Earth everywhere humans inhabit. Plastics are now polluting vast areas of oceans and having bad effects on aquatic life forms from minute microbes to whales. We humans tend to destroy and destroy with little or no thought of the implications.
We are literally shitting in our own nest...and the day may come when the nest is so polluted no humans can live in it.
Good post. Too bad we humans are so short sighted (as I drink my beer and toss the empty can out my car window.

Please dont understimate this virus. 1) it is likely anywhere between 10X to 30X more fatal than tbe seasonal flu. 2) it is highly contagious, maybe 50-70 of tbe world population will eventually be infected 3)even when not fatal and someone recovers there is a high chance of long term lung damage. 4) elderly are most at risk, but anyone can catch it and transmit it and younger people can end up in ICU. 5) Mexico with its poor health infrastructure, lack of ventilators and not treating it seriously will be a disaster zone.

Stay safe everyone and look after each other, especially elderly as best you can.

San Diego is a little more weird and surreal with each passing minute. I have truly never seen empty shelves and people in our community acting so self centered and of course trying to profit off of the vulerable.
Good news...there has already been one task force yesterday I believe that netted quite a few scumbags caught price gouging here in SD alone and I know more are being done around the US. They were hoarding and selling to those in need for mass markup and they will be come down hard on for it,
The online scam activity is through the roof spread the word to double check emails and before calling anyone number you don't know back.
Grocery tip for anyone trying to shop...don't be discouraged, I found last night at Target that the candy, the potato chip aisle, the cookie aisles, and the aisles with the Coke, Dr Pepper, etc are about 35% stocked! Forget the diet, that can wait, you have to have a balanced meal so go for it and it's better than nothing as not kidding, there was zero milk, toilet paper, frozen meals, no soups, nothing in 4 stores I went to,
I was down South last week and have to go probably tomorrow to check on some things, but their attitudes was business as normal, but dead quiet that is for sure. Lots wanted to speak with me out of concern for my father who is 80 and who I quorantined with me in SD, and they wanted to kno how to know if people had it as I guess they are getting no information about it. Most of the guys that were talking with me were genuinely nervous and they almost all mentioned seperately that they don't think it is spreading there as much YET, as people have already been hesitant to travel at least in BC and boarder towns like in times past, and they say now no one is coming to visit that is new, etc. In other words, they think because of the conditions already present, it's the same people, no one leaves, no one really new visiting and therefore less chance for travelers or others to bring it from somewehre else. I thought this was an interesting possibility. Others as we saw in several areas including Ensenada didn't skip a beat in a day of fighting and I bet some will use it in ways as an advantage to somehow get over others like the Government, taking advantage of less pressure for some from US and MX teams or deportation efforts, no courthouses open the back log of statute of limitations claims is out of control already which helps some and will hurt others of course, Police seem to not be as much around where I have been in the last several days, but it seems like a time when things could get ugly because of the circumstances, and anyhere. I could see things escalating down South and up here equally if we are not careful.
Watch out for each other and try to remain calm as crazy things can spark in desperate people's minds, and we need to act as others have mentioned... think of ways to be helpful and friendly to others, save the other stuff for later as we need to stay united and we will persevere...Thanks again Chivis!

I have other business trips dating as far out as August in other parts of Mexico and they are all pending cancellation too. I live in northern Mexico and quarantine measures have been slow. There was a 5K/10K race in my hometown the other day and only schools are closed. The libraries I visit over the weekend are still open. Same goes for my gym. Employers don't seem too happy about letting people work from home. Seriousness has to come from the top (our leadership) but Mexico is lacking that when it comes to this. Like we've read from Italy, this can tilt overnight and I don't think Mexico is prepared for it yet.

    52. I received a report that the mayor of Puerto Penasco,Sonora, Mr. Munro, has refused to obey the Governor of Sonora's orders and will keep open all beaches for upcoming Semana Santa. I'm not sure how that will work out since Trump will order the border closed soon. We know they depend on turismo dollars. I do appreciate the confident and fearless attitude if Mexicans but this time it may not be wise.

    63. 80,000 Americans died of severe flu in 2018. The corona deaths are nowhere near that number and wont be. There are 20 million residents in CA and 20 have died of Corona. More died in LA yestetday alone of heroin ODs. This is a mild disease according to the CDCs guidlines. This panic is caused by the media and democrat leaders like Gavin Newsome. You dont quarantine an entire state without giving people money and food before hand. After this is said and done it will be a crime of epic proportions against the working people of America. It is being perpetrated by the elite democratic leadership and the left wing media including Fox news.

      2. 9:33 you're right with a couple of exceptions. This has been blown out of proportion by the media. California has 40 million residents not 20m, and to put the blame on Democrats and liberals is somewhat foolish. I don't consider myself democratic, liberal, Republican or right wing. Both parties are equally responsible, they all lay in the same bed. Don't be fooled by the rhetoric.

In a sense, the border is always closed unless you are allowed to enter. Cartels bypass this procedure all the time, past, present, and future, in multiple ways and places.

    76. 288k cases and 12k deaths globally (all ppl with compromised immune systems so they were already at risk of other things anyway) that’s a .04% mortality rate.

Meanwhile b4 this shit Mexico has seen 200k murders and 60k ppl go missing the last 13 years that’s 20k casualties a year. But ppl still don’t hesitate to go for a cheap vacation or visiting relatives who are at risk of cartel violence.

USA 2017 39k people died from guns, 23k of those were suicides. But we’re not protecting gun owner from themselves. Or placing weird rules because of a few shooters.

647k die each year of heart disease in America alone!!!! Holy fuck that is 1700 a day!!! But that hasn’t stopped people from eating themselves to an early grave for the past half century

I understand this is a respiratory thing and if u have those problems, I understand taking precautions.
But to everyone else, there will always be dangers and this quarantine is just fucking silly, life has always gone on too. This shouldn’t stop us from living our lives. I can deal with this for the next few weeks but it ain’t no way to fucking live. “Just because u live doesn’t mean ur alive”

    80. People dont get it. They always compare it to diseases that are far deadlier, but thats not the case. The chances of dying from it are low, 5% and the ones that died usually had other health problems already, but thats not the point, the reason why the medical world is concerned is because of its ability to spread so fast, faster than their ability to combat it. Alot of deadlier viruses can be controlled, not cured but controlled into a certain area and have vaccines to prevent them while Covid19 was able to spread so fast before a vaccine for it has been found effective. Also its ability to infect alot of people and not show symptoms and that people having no idea theyre carrying and spreading it without knowing it making those more vulnerable to catch it much easier. While it seems harmless to a healthy person, it can kill an unhealthy person so quickly. Now look at the people with asthma, bronchitis or anything similar, theres millions of them, old and young, theyre at high risk, and at the rate Covid19 spreads, it can turn into a much bigger peoblem. All this social distancing isnt to keep you alive, its to slow it down and give the medical community time to catch up and develop a vaccine to treat it. Corona Virus isnt new, it was discovered in the 60s and its more common than you think, but has many strains and this new one is new and highly contagious thats why its having so much attention. Now the people that panic, its not the government making people panic, people panic because they dont take the time to learn about it, and whats going on. The government tells the people dont panic and dont buy more than you need, but the media will say it their way for views and ratings and if 1 panics the rest follows, 1 buys toilet paper and everyone follows. Monkey see monkey do. Nobody not the government not the news told people to buy alot of toilet paper, that is the misinformed telling the other misinformed

    81. Keep the mice playing musical chairs, let them ro sham bo over toilet paper, let them think doing what their told = survival. Anything to discourage them to quiet the fear so they can think critically and ...."Follow the money".

Unfortunately their are groups in our society who like sharks in a feeding frenzy stand to benefit when the fish are divided and in a panic..whether that panic is justified or not matters nil so long as the result is the same.

Rather than flat out obey as the tv says or deny it all may I suggest we all take a time out to consider what is happening right now. Its just as easy to accept you are being attacked as it is to deny it yet not one person has posted...not one..that says they or someone they know has tested positive let alone died from this virus....rather in certainty or in doubt it may be of benefit to remember the old adage of ?cui bono?... ?to whom benefits? ....to whom benefits indeed...tread lightly young mice...united we ?????...divided we ????...ahh you know the words...

Ps- speaking of word...next time you hear anyone speak of having zero empathy for their fellow man whom happen to be partakers of insert currently deemed prohibited substance, wax poetic of doing away with our civil liberty whole sale or similar train of arse to mouth thought as the rational cure to dealing with issues not yours to begin with, kindly remind them..they came for the drug addicts and we did nothing, they came for the other and those that did not as i do and we did nothing, then thhey came for for we and their was no one left to come for me.
