Axton, Virginia: Four Cartel Members Charged With Selling Drugs

Four members of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) have been indicted on federal money laundering charges.

United States Attorney Thomas Cullen and Jesse Fong, the Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, announced Monday the grand jury returned an indictment charging Alejandro Escarcega-Avila, Francisco Alvarez-Rosales, Meliton Alvarez-Rosales, and Noe Salvador Becerra-Gonzalez with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Escarcega-Avila is also charged with one count of illegal reentry of a previously removed alien and one count of illegal possession of a firearm by an illegal alien.

Cullen said all four individuals are citizens of Mexico, illegally living in Axton, a town of about 6,500 people.

According to the indictment, between 2018 - around January 2020, the four individuals conspired to conduct financial transactions affecting interstate commerce, specifically the transfer, delivery, and exchange of United States currency.

Cullen said it involved the proceeds from the distribution and manufacturing of controlled substances.

As part of the conspiracy, members and affiliates of CJNG transported cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and other substances, into the United States from Mexico.

Prosecutors said CJNG recruited individuals from Mexico to live in Axton, to facilitate the distribution of these controlled substances from CJNG throughout the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

Cullen said the four men charged and their co-conspirators got a large amount of cash for payment of the distribution of the drugs and sent the cash to members and affiliates of the CJNG in Mexico.

This investigation was funded in part by the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Program.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations, the Virginia State Police, and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office Assistant United States Attorneys Erin Harrigan and Sean Welsh are prosecuting the case for the United States.
