The Attorney General of the State of Michoacán reported that municipal police officers from Ocampo and Angangueo were called to testify about the disappearance of activist Homero Gómez González .

On January 13, the disappearance of Homero Gómez, defender of the forests of eastern Michoacán and the main promoter of the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary of the El Rosario El Ejido, classified as the largest in the world, was reported.

The agency added that work continues to locate Gómez González, who was last seen in the town of El Soldado, municipality of Ocampo.

A week after one of Mexico’s foremost experts on monarch butterflies mysteriously vanished, a local human-rights organization is urging authorities to investigate, suggesting the case may be linked to illegal logging.

Homero Gomez, a 50-year-old agricultural engineer who manages the El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacan, was last seen Jan. 13 while attending a meeting in a neighboring town, the attorney general of the State of Michoacá said. Authorities say the next morning, messages promoting El Rosario were sent from his cellphone to all of his contacts.

His family reported him missing that afternoon after his phone went silent, authorities said. The Human Rights State Commission of Michoacan has also asked the attorney general’s office to determine if Gomez’s disappearance is linked to his activism against logging.

The day he went missing, Gomez tweeted two videos of thousands of monarchs in El Rosario: Both showed the butterflies “looking for water” in the “largest sanctuary in the world.”

Prosecutors said they had detained the entire police forces of Ocampo and neighbouring Angangueo for questioning.

Prosecutors have not said why they suspect the local police officers of involvement in Mr Gómez's disappearance.

It is not the first time the police force of Ocampo has been detained for questioning. In June 2018, 27 officers were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a local politician who was running for mayor.

Ocampo is located in Michoacán state, a region that is notorious for its violent criminal gangs, which often bribe or intimidate local police into working for them.
