Former Mexican Security Chief, Genaro Garcia Luna in plea negotiations with U.S.

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

Genaro Garcia Luna is in plea negotiations with the United States.  It would be pragmatic for the U.S. to negotiate a plea with the former security chief of Mexico as going to trial could become a sticky situation for the U.S. especially if Garcia wants to spill the beans on former presidents he worked under, namely Fox and Calderon.

It would be very unlikely that the U.S. could act on any information Garcia could share, although many Mexicans are salivating at the thought.

In 2004 the U.S. took to trial and convicted the former prime minister of Ukraine, for money laundering and other crimes.  It was only the second time in history that a foreign head of government was successfully prosecuted.  And more interesting is it was the first time a head of a foreign government was convicted in part on crimes committed in his country.

With respect to Mexico—even the idea of prosecuting a former president,   for crimes committed in Mexico, could have disastrous implications given the close relationship our two nations have and must have.

Highly doubtful it would be done for crimes committed in Mexico.  And there is the issue of immunity.

It’s complicated.

What Garcia could do, is share information on narcos yet to be prosecuted.  In other words he becomes just another cooperative witness in the massive sea of bad guys.

Perhaps a legal mind can weigh in?

  2. Cooperate and plea, do his short stint in prison, gets to stay in the US, doesn't spill the beans on other US and Mexico politicians and business as usual, drugs keep getting sold and people keep getting killed. Crime does pay.

Ask a poor Mexican person if he'd do 5 years in federal prison and then gets a large sum of money and gets to stay in the US. My guess, over 90% would say yes!

    1. @11:46 pretty much sums it up I'd say, except you forgot: 'and the drugs keeps on flowing, the bribes being paid and the poor keep on dying'.

  4. The thing about the former Ukrainian pm being the first head of state to be prosecuted for crimes committed in their own country is untrue. The US and France both prosecuted Noriega.

    1. I stated it was the second time. as for france and U.S. prosecutions it was for crimes in the U.S.

I think france claim was that he purchased a luxury apt complex to laundry money in france, same in US money laundering and trafficking. complex because he was technically a POW.

  5. Everybody from CDS is in a plea agreement with the U.S. for leaner sentences. How many people can have valuable info on that cartels workings however? I, mean after Chapo, Zambada Kids, Chino Antrax and more why is it CDS is still as strong as ever if they all cooperate with American authorities after their capture?
It's all a joke! If the U.S. was not helping CDS this cartel would be gone.
Zamabada and the rest of the Guzman family is out and about enjoying themselves to this very day and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future as proof.

    1. I wouldnt say strong as ever. I live here in Culiacan. And have my fair share of insides with certain individuals that i shall not mention. Due to the fact that its no ones business. But let me tell you something; before, i am 30 years old and have done 8 years in United States federal prison system. Didnt snitch either. And the money doesnt flow in quantitites like it used to. Theres still heavy hitters getting millions dont get me wrong. But begore the war anyone could get a substantial amount of work and get money and theyve really trim the fat. Dont get me wront thwrees stil a lot of work and money coming in but its coming in to a very minimal amount of people.before a lot of random motherfu kers were ballin here in Culiacan. Lemme tell u. Many might play the role cuz they have 14 push start decent vehicle. But people that ive seen with millions are scraping by. The lifestyle gets more anf more expensive as the years go by. Dont believe the hype people.

    2. 1:56. That's because poor people starting in the drug businesses are getting paid less and less for their work. Specially if they are not there by nepotism or something of the sorts. Much like American corporations that only theirnedecutived and CEOs enjoy healthy raises each year regardless if the businesses is doing well or not while the remaining 87 percent of their employees do not receive any decent amount of wage increase.

    3. 1:56 I appreciate your honesty, most people from sinaloa hype sh!t up too much and the majority live in the states SMH
That lifestyle ALWAYS catches up to you and it's not worth it. Know of many who were doing good without a care in the world getting money but now gave it up or got kidnapped for ransom $$ and many in prison

  6. It's CLEAR that CDS CARTEL is PART of 🇲🇽 government with backing from U.S..
I wouldn't be surprised if chapo was in sinaloa relaxing laughing at the people who THINK he is locked up in ADX 😆

  7. If history has taught us anything as the Chapo trial has peeled back the onion of criminality is that it can only exist at any level in a civilized society with nurturing and encouragement from the authority AKA The Man. The US govt wants to avoid a pony show because their behind his rise and fall. Plus, Genero gets the Anthrax deal....7 a 10 anos en Club Fed ese tiene que pasar...

  8. Why enter plea negotiations? Lesser sentence for more clarity, and if it's former president's, why would we care. Are we into protecting the political elite of each country? When has the truth ever harmed anyone. Straight up. Luna, no breaks, because whatever you can give up, is Sinaloa bags of money and knowledge that will not be acted upon.

  11. What a shame. GGL could open all the locked doors of corruption. He and the CORRUPT US backed SIU were paid by BLO, los Zetas, CDG and Sinaloa. They used their positions of trust to coddle US intel and Law Enforcement. They took precious intel and sold it to the cartels. He will be swept quietly under the rug to avoid the embarrassing complacency and complicit actions of his USG friends. The Allende massacre, Monterrey fire, blatant obstruction of Chapo arrest operations, protection of ABL from capture on multiple occasions just to name a few of he and his creation the SIU's crimes. He had his associates murdered and sold the reigns of control to Ramon Pequeno who sold it to Ivan Reyes. The USG and MX are afraid of the truth coming out. Its not just GGL its also his successors, a line of murder, corruprion, and intelligence betrayed for money that continues to this day. Countless informants have been killed as a direct result of the treachery of these men and sadly condoned or at the least ignored by willing US partners.
