Texas man refuses carjackers demand and loses his life on Reynosa International Bridge

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat material from La Prensa and CBS Austin

Óscar Manuel Reséndez, of Mission, Texas, was gunned down after refusing to hand over his SUV's keys to suspected  carjackers

An American who was in line to cross the international bridge Reynosa - Hidalgo was murdered by criminals trying to carjack him.

At 5:50 p.m. the report was received by the Red Cross about person shot on the Luis Echeverría boulevard at the height of the Riviera Eventos, about two kilometers from the access to Hidalgo, Texas.

When the ambulance arrived, paramedics pronounced the man dead.

Óscar Manuel Reséndez, a married father-of-two, was returning to his home in Texas, after traveling to the border city of Reynosa where he was visiting his family ahead of the holidays.

The 41-year-old  Endodontics Oral Surgeon, who runs a practice in the state of Tamaulipas, was stuck in heavy traffic with people waiting to cross the McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge when multiple gunmen approached his SUV.

American dentist Óscar Manuel Reséndez was murdered after he confronted suspected carjackers on a road near the Mexico-United States border on Monday

Witnesses reported that armed people tried to strip the victim of his red Escape and demanded his keys, but Reséndez refused, stepped out of the car and confronted the gunmen causing one of them to shoot.
Paramedics block off traffic at a northern Mexico road where Óscar Manuel Reséndez was killed during a botched carjacking. The suspects are still on the run

  1. [Sorry we missed this story! It happened on Christmas Eve]

  2. Did I read that correctly that he was driving a red Ford Escape? If so, 1) that’s a low-value car for someone to bother attempting to steal, and 2) a bit surprised a dentist who one would logically assume makes good money would be driving that type of vehicle.

    1. Just because someone has money doesn’t mean that they have to have a luxury or more expensive vehicle. That is called being humble and simple.

  3. It seems CDG in Reynosa didnt understood the "No Killing American Game" unlike CDN in Nuevo Laredo

  4. First mistake was going to Mexico with an SUV. The last mistake was not giving them what they want. Just terrible.

  6. What's so hard about not killing Americans? A Ford Escape? Really?? Now the headlines are "cartel kills an American dentist". How stupid are these people? If the car has US plates, leave it alone. Seems simple enough. Smh...

  8. If you aren't armed, you don't confront someone who is armed.

He lost his life over an insured vehicle..

    1. I don't think American Insurance is valid in Mexico.

    2. You can buy it over the border. It’s like $5-$15 per day. And also some American insurances do cover u up to 20-30 miles into the border. Do ur research @6:31

    1. He looks like Dean Lister, famous leg locker and grappler extraordinaire, in the top pic. I thought it was at first glance. Seems odd to "carjack" a car stuck in a line for a border crossing. Especially for a Ford Escape. Many condolences to the family.

  10. Not many people get car jacked while stuck in line

  14. Sad story.

Mexican thugs don’t give a shit and will kill for less.

The SUV can be replaced. He can not.

Moral of the story. Either don’t go, and if you do, be low key, don’t stand out, and give up the car of some worthless human who has nothing to loose by killing you demands your car.

  16. .....nice big SUV's, black pimped out Ford F350's with those (mostly useless) dually tires.... pure bling, a flashing neon sign that says "come and steal me". You might as well be wearing a gold Rolex watch, albeit on wheels, in this lawless country. As they say, "In Rome, do as the Romans do"... my 7 year old VW Golf is a safer vehicle to drive in Mexico. My TIP sticker is in the glovebox, not on the windscreen, and there is no front license plate on my car. Why be a rolling gringo mordida Mark for every transito cop out there?

  25. so sad, please give up your belongings if your traveling to states such as chihuahua nuevo leon or tamaulips (the last beign the worst) keep in mind there's a chance you'll be robbed when least expect it, the smart thing to do is give it up and try not to play hero your life is all it matters, i travel frequently to tijuana crossing both on foot and driving so far no issues stay low key avoid flashy jewerly, big luxury vehicles especially trucks or anything that show off wealth and you'll be fine, stay safe

  31. Mexico has no guarantees for their nationals or tourists. Therefore, it can’t be considered a sovereign country as they claim when international intervention is offered. When Mexican nationals and tourists can’t file a formal complaint for a crime with authorities without been laughed at due to cops and government corruption at all levels, is time to condemn. Mexican Nationals have no choice but to fight back and demand respect from their authorities. Tourists have the choice to to stop traveling to Mexico not knowing if they or their loved ones will make it back home alive. Is sad that such a beautiful country end up on this situation due to greed and lack of respect from the government to its citizens.

  33. My esposo and his family were robbed last week at the u turn nearthe Nuevo Laredo paisano center by an armed group, they demanded $600, US dollars, not pesos. They gave it right away. They saw a different car not respond fast enough and they pulled them from the car at gunpoint. We drive through often and this was a first for this happening.
