Mexico thanks Trump for holding off on terrorist designation for drug cartels

Chivis Martinez  Borderland Beat  TYGus  Reuters

Mexico’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, on Friday thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for holding off on classifying Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups, a proposal that Mexico’s government had opposed.

“I’m thankful for President Donald Trump’s decision to delay the designation of organizations as terrorists at the request of President Lopez Obrador,” Ebrard said in a tweet. “Cooperation has been gained and there will be good results.”

Note: Other reports say that Mexico has agreed  to involve U.S. in a greater role in combating narcos in Mexico.

  1. Why is Mexico reluctant calling the drug cartels which terrorize its nation for more than 10 yrs and no end in sight. We know hugs and flying kisses doesn't work.

    1. Because they know the second that happens its a game changer. Those in power will all fall. And they know it....

    2. You're talking like the US is not involved in fighting the cartels. Trust me, they are there and they're doing their best. Is overrated to think that things will change dramatically if they'll designate cartels terrorist organizations.

    3. The moment cartels are labeled terrorist is when the U.S will take action and pursue them on their own turf.

Mexico is reluctant because 1: the mexican government doesn't want war on their home land. With war comes colateral damage. With colateral damage comes "blowback". If you think mexico is bad right now, wait until the U.S starts killing innocent people in pursuit of these "terrorists". Mexico will really become destabilized.

Reason number 2: AMLO is not a sell out, and whether you agree with it or not, it is what it is. MEXICO'S NOT FOR SALE! AMLO refuses the help, whether it be monetary or military because the minute he accepts it is the minute he becomes a puppet.

    4. la causa del arrepentimiento es que la ley dice que castigara a todos los que tengan que ver con los terroristas atacandolos desde sus raices y asi los que proveen de armas a los terroristas narcos son ellos mismos , iran contra la asociacion del rifle ?

      no creo

    5. What if both of those presidents had a son or daughter killed by one of those narco terrorist, how would they see those narco terrorist then?

    6. Because currently, nobody in Mexico is prosecuted for taking bribes. This would change these individuals to assisting terrorist and would be prosecuted on a much larger international scale.

    7. @4:13pm. Yes it will make a difference. If they are designated terrorist then if they kill a US soldier or agent then we can give the cartels death from above. More resources would be available as well. It wouldnt end the cartels but it would change a lot. More hugh ranking members would get killed by air strikes. Future members would be reluctant to join the ranks of the cartel. I welcome this

    3. @7:53 Dont be so ignorant. The mexican government allowed him to be released to avoid civil unrest. You may not agree with it but it's done all the time all over the U.S...A perfect example is when the police stand down on a dangerous car chase to avoid the loss of life. It happens everywhere, aqui y en China wey.

  3. I can't belive the US backed down! IMO it because it will be well known just how much involvement some US agencies have with the cartels and how the cartels got their power, to the corrupt people in the US who allow mass quantities of drugs to cross the border. Another win for the cartels. And yet another loss for the people of Mexico.

    1. Can't believe?
Look at the report given about Afghanistan's war on terrorism. An unwinnable war like those of many countries. Chaos and violence are the only results for many of these destabalized places.
Along with the formation of militants who in turn wage war upon the US.

Moreover, Let's not forget the so called policy of US negotiating with suspected terrorists which is underway in Afghanistan.

  4. They don’t want the designation of terrorist because of the way the U.S. wrote the laws. It would put Mexico and the corruption in dire straits. The way the law reads, if the U.S. designates and shows proof that a person is part of the terrorist organization or assists the organization, the U.S. can demand the extradition of that person. If the other government refuses, then any and all future financial assistance can be terminated immediately.
This basically means that any pact the Mexican government would have to decide to keep assisting the Capos from arrest and extradition or they could lose billions in financial aid. This could include any government officials that help the terrorist organization.

  5. If they label them as terrorist all the crooked politicos and anyone or anything associated w narcos are gonna have their things taken away.. proof that the government is crooked , and also very embarrassing for Mexico ...

  6. Trump did the common people of Mexico no favor withholding the designation, only the elites benefit from the status quo.

  7. For people asking why Mexico doesn't want to be at designated as a terrorist. Because of tourism would be fucked up. Who would visit a county with terrorist? Definitely no Europeans Ect

The tourism sector has been destroyed by cartel problems.

    2. Truly doubt that the U.S. will be happy to have terrorists across the road. Too close for comfort and too risky.
Besides our borders aren't securely protected from what comes now.
