FROM Reuters:

A Mexican journalist was found dead with stab wounds on Saturday, authorities said, adding to a growing list of reporter deaths in one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the press.

The state of Mexico prosecutor said it was investigating the cause of death of Nevith N., 42, whose body was found in the Tejupilco municipality about 75 miles (122 km) from Mexico City.

Advocacy group Reporters Without Borders identified him as Nevith Condés Jaramillo, who ran the local news site El Observatorio del Sur in the central state of Mexico.

Condés had published stories that triggered tensions with the local government and he received threats in November and June, a Reporters Without Borders spokeswoman said, citing information obtained from Condés’ reporter colleagues.

The group has singled out Mexico as the most dangerous country for journalists in the Western Hemisphere.

If proven as a homicide, Condes’ death would bring the murder toll of Mexican journalists this year to at least 10 compared with nine last year, according to free-speech advocacy group Article 19.

Earlier this month, three reporters were killed in a single week, including one who had received threats.

Murders in Mexico jumped in the first half of the year to the highest on record, according to official data. The spiraling violence underscores the challenges President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has faced since taking office in December with a vow to reduce violence in the country ravaged by notorious drug cartels.

  1. This is bad but then again "safe" USA had a plane hijacked once a week in the decade of the 60s. Some countries learn to hide their bad news under the rug.

    1. 12:57AM look it up, Catherine Marie Kerkow is still on the run for a 1972 highjacking and is on Interpols list of fugitives. Wikipedia's list for these crimes has about an incident per week from 1968 till 1972 but it's incomplete. The actual numbers go back further and are alarming.

  3. Mr. President (as in if AMLO were to read this jajaja), you cannot tame serial killers like the cartels employ by good deeds; your intentions are good but lame. It would take many decades of great economic growth to reach prosperity (sustainable employment) so that people would not want to work for cartels; moreover, serial killers will always be no matter national prosperity, just look at the US for proof. Might makes right, so you must use control aggressively and fairly to gain societal pacification.

    1. 1:30 strict control has already been used, 400 000 reported victims of the Wars on drugs are witnesses, but they can't talk thanks to those supporters of the Empire of the Law applying their personal criteria as "evidence", and there are thousands of disappeared not being counted, even if their graves get found.
Twelve years of war on drugs is told easy, living them is getting harder, But AMLO has never offered impunity for criminals or murderers, and that is where YOU are wrongly trying to soil the Presidente's Reputation , It is called reputation assassination.
      Beware of your own propaganda.

    2. Regarding the part of your rant, ". . . and that is where you are wrongly trying to soil the Presidente's reputation, it is called reputation assassination. Beware of your own propaganda," that is nonsense, you are unable obviously to comprehend what you read because you read with your own bias, an unfortunate affliction due in this case to being brainwashed by the cartels' propaganda machine. Actually, we like AMLO for being a good decent person, but he must study criminal history closely to find the real answers to his dilemma.

  5. It devastating to hear how many deaths have occurred at the hands of the cartels. Worse, NOT one president has been able to do make any changes and don’t foresee any positive changes with AMLO. Sad, just sad.
