DEA Warns of Deadly Fentanyl Laced Cocaine Ahead of New Year's Celebrations

DEA Warns of Deadly Cocaine Laced with Fentanyl Ahead of New Year's Eve Celebration

By: Myles Miller, NY, NY :
It's the deadliest drug in America, shipped here from Mexico and China: Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin.

Ray Donovan is the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York Field Office.

"Two milligrams is considered potentially lethal," Donovan says.

This year, his office seized a record 540 million one milligram dosage units, enough to kill the entire city.   Roughly $500 million worth of drugs stopped from hitting city streets.

"Which essentially means thousands and thousands of lives have been saved," Donovan says.

With tourists expected to flood the city for New Year’s Eve, the DEA fears many unsuspecting people may be at risk of coming in contact with the deadly drug.

"You have a lot of out of town people coming here to celebrate,” Donovan says. “It's an opportunity for a drug trafficker or a distributor to pass drugs along to these potential users. And they might think they're getting one particular drug, but in fact they're getting fentanyl."

Between 2013 and 2016, overdose deaths involving fentanyl increased about 113 percent per year, according to the CDC.

New York is a hub for fentanyl sales cross the northeast.

"We often see large shipments of heroin and fentanyl coming into the city and getting dispersed throughout the northeast as far up as Maine as far down as DC and West Virginia," Donovan says.

There have been several high profile deaths associated with the synthetic opioid—originally created to treat end-stage terminal cancer patients.

In 2016, Prince died after ingesting a fatal amount of fentanyl.

Recently, the toxic mixture of cocaine and fentanyl led to the death of popular rapper Mac Miller.

Most drug users think they are buying pure cocaine or pure heroin, but it couldn't be farther from the truth.

So why would drug dealers, whose number one goal is to make money want to sell a deadly cocktail that could kill their clients?

"It's about market competition,” Donovan says. “To make their narcotics stronger and to make is so that the user wants to come back. They get hooked faster."

And it shows: the most recent stats released by the state put opioid-related deaths up 60 percent from 2015 to 2017.       Nationally, nearly 60 percent of all overdoses were opioid-related.

Have a Safe and Happy New Years ; Feliz Año, Cuidense Amigos !!

    2. Perhaps you are a new BB reader ? We have done many many posts about Fentanyl busts and Fentanyl moving into the market. many precurser chemicals come from China and thru Mexico's Pacific Ports, most if not all are controlled by cartels and/or organized crime. keep in mind this is a news article of US origin......for sure Sinaloa and CJNG and others are moving Fent.

    3. Like Yaqui said, its mostly coming from China. It wouldnt surprise me if CDS was trading that super meth, for Fent- With metb being so big in asia..
You can also order mostly pure fent, or many fent analogs from the deep web..
As far as whos selling it on this side of the border, just look at all the fent busts, and whos getting caught with it- some guy got popped about a yr ago- in the northeast- with 50lbs of pure fen- he was CDS if I remember right- I couldnt imagine being in his shoes right now....theyre going to stick it in him dry at sentencing-

The cartel for some reason thinks this is what junkies want since its so much stronger- in my experience asking people that know, not many even like the shit- they would prefer strong h, way before anything fen related- also, the line between being high, and dying, is way to thin- its just not worth it- and killing off your customer base is a great way to not make money, or to end up in prison for reckless homicide or aggravated manslaughter- whatever the right title is-

    5. There have also been small bust across the US of US citizens ordering fentanyl straight from China and selling on dark web...I do agree that most of the fentanyl coming into the country is manufactured in Mexico; however I think the Mexican traffickers tend to use it as cut and enhancer for their other narcotics i.e., heroin, coke, and meth...US traffickers are selling the actual opioid—just my two cents

    1. Yep. The Chinese triad or mafia really don't give a f*** if they kill their costumers. I mean i know drugs are bad but you can't compare this to the old school asian heroin or mexican black tar. They're bad and yes they kill you slowly (common junkies use to live at least 10+ years using before quitting or going full blown hardcore homeless
they MIGHT kill you if you're newbie and have no tolerance but fentanyl and carfent wont matter it kills you quickly.

  19. I am always baffled by these reports of cocaine "cut" with fentanyl! It just does not make sense.. why would anyone cut coke with fentanyl? Cocaine is a stimulant and fentanyl is a depressant! Fentanyl costs 5 to 10 times more than cocaine! The amount of fentanyl you would need to cut coke would kill everyone that uses it! What dealer wants to kill their customers and heat themselves out like that?? I would bet that the few cases of cocaine contaminated with fentanyl is from careless inexperienced low level dealers who are cutting heroin with fentanyl and then using the same surface to package or cut their coke without cleaning off the surface beforehand.. And then the DEA and local police and media have a field day spreading fear amongst the population saying beware of cocaine "cut" with fentanyl..

    3. 522 have you ever heard of speedballing… It’s what killed John Belushi doing heroin and Coke… The junkies like the rush of the stimulant and then the down of the sedative Google it it’s well-documented and been a phenomenon in the US since the late 1970s. And based on the busts being made in Mexico and US It’s absolutely clear that this is exactly what the drug traffickers are doing. The overhead and cost associated with transportation in manufacturing of cocaine make it much more costly to produce then fentanyl—They are doing it to enhance the effect of their product and to make more money. It’s definitely for sale on the streets here in Texas
BTW—It cost about $1000 to produce a kilo of cocaine didn’t remember you have to transport it into the US and that will cost you to get each kilo to US where it’s worth 25 K https://www.businessinsider.com/from-colombia-to-new-york-city-the-economics-of-cocaine-2015-7

Fentanyl on the other hand can be purchased from Chinese companies for around $6000-$14,000 delivered right to your door in the US… And when Synthesized with the precursors it’s much much cheaper… You might try using Google every now and then cocaine is much much more expensive Fentanyl

    4. Users and addicts are always searching for that better high. I'm sure most are aware there is fent in there. The mixture is similar to what is popular with mixing coke and heroin called a speedball. User like the euphoria of combining the two. If they try it and like it, there is demand for more. The problem lies with dosage. With fent your dealing with micrograms. Very hard to control does when you are measuring in sizes of salt grains. With heroin, you had to use the two separately. With fent, its mixed right in and you'll never even know it's there unless someone tells you or you use it. Then it's too late. Overdoses aren't a deterrent for an addict. It can actually increase demand. Google Frank lucus. Good example

    5. Fent goes for 40-60k per key USD depending on how many bricks you buy. Your info and price ranges are way way off, but of course that’s because you are getting your info from the internet and not the street.

    6. Great! Thanks for the lesson Douglas..👏 Its clear you now exactly what you are taking about.🙄

    7. IMO: The mixture is purposefullY concocted and not accidental. The people that OD and die have varying levels of vulnerability for lots of reasons. This must be considered as much as the quality and quantity of drugs used.

Also, with fentanyl being so powerful the margin of error is very small. ... a sort of modern push-pull "speedball" where both the depressant effects on the body and stimulating effects phase in. Addicts like this so the mixtures sell. Many opioid and meth/coke addicts are beyond reasoning logically... they morph into drug seeking entities driven by the artificial needs in their minds and bodies.
There is so much more at many levels to this whole complicated issue. NIDA Web site has stuff on the "push -pull" dynamics of ODing.

    8. 513 its not 1980 its 2018...the street as you call it now exists in cyberspace...its called Tor and is an anonymous browser for the Dark Web. Users can order Fentanyl right off internet from china for 6-14K a kilo...you can click on the links I provided above or you can just google it and end up at a Chinese company website selling everything from phenyl acetic acid and methlyamine (precursers used to synthesize methamphetamine)_ to fentanyl or precursors needed to synthesize it.
BTW we all know how reliable info from the streets is---TRUTH...NOT!...LOL
It's called reality why don't you join us in it...or like many of above commenters just continue to reside in the "Vast Wasteland"--as the late, great Newton Minnow used to say and believe that because you've never heard of something before or it doesn't mesh with your worldview it can't be true...the story is factual and right on as usual with BB...Great story Yaqui and Happy Holidays to all at BB. We are all better off with your facts, data, and coverage.

I'll end with this...."But for the grace of God there go I" in terms of addiction, if you have ever had a loved one or fallen into addiction yourself you will never know...just how easy...just how difficult...and how devastating addiction can be. Some people have a "chemical fingerprint" in their DNA and biological makeup that makes them more susceptible to addiction...No amount of punishment deters addiction...treatment and education are the keys to stopping addicts and helping them heal.

Treating a social problem criminally doesn't work....it actually has made our drug problem worse in the US...because of the immense profits involved. Drugs are much more readily available and much cheaper today despite the failed war on drugs. Need I remind people of the early 1980s when cocaine was selling for 50-60K a kilo.
Rant over...Happy New Year to all

    9. @ Doug: Excellent post. Drug addictons of all kinds have one thing in common. Drug addict come to behave as if they have an indestructible "parasite" (like tapeworm) in their body and mind.

This parasite grows very powerful and demanding and dictate behaviors and how the world is seen and defined. In a way, the drug parasite grows increasingly powerful and converts the addict into a robot.
Many comercial drug addiction treatment programs do not address this problem effectively because they legally can't do what is required to kill the drug parasite or because they would lose clients.... it's about practicalities, money, legalities, and drug addiction as a virtually indestructible worm in the brain.
      Think about it?

    10. Mexico-watcher I agree with you to an extent… I think every addict deserves a chance at rehabilitation and redemption. However because the war on drugs and interdiction don’t work we must try new strategies my thought is provide the illegal narcotics through the government to people who want to be addicts collect their info, Make them pay if they can afford to give them their narcotics and manage and supervise it—if they want to kill themselves and be a junkie then let them. Just my two cents

You had me until the last sentence. being an addict does not have to include a path to death. functioning addicts are the majority. oversight is needed, regulation is needed, options are needed. Legalization across the Nation!! something I was totally against all my life...no mas. it is the only method of control.

Take a look at alcohol and prohibition. a case study

Might I remind you of the first fear-based campaign against narcotics; reefer madness by the infamous William Randolph Hearst. 26. Also 8:12 you sound like a genius… I’m guessing a stable genius… just thought I’d let you know that there’s a bunch of really smart guy‘s—doctors actually, who publish this book called the DSM-IV, DSM five, etc. it’s written by a bunch of Really smart psychiatrists and psychologists with a ton of education and research experience—some have spent their entire lives actually researching and studying the diagnoses included in the book.

I used to use it in my work as a counselor. it’s an excellent resource and provided me invaluable information over the course of my career. The diagnostic and statistical manual states that addiction is a disease.

Now I am no doctor or psychologist or psychiatrist and I’m guessing by the syntax and semantics of your post you’re not either.

I’m going to trust the really smart doctors who spent their entire lives studying researching and working to actually help those afflicted with the disorders included in the diagnostic and statistical manual.

But I guess you’re smarter than those guys...Maybe you should write a DSM I’ve even got a wonderful idea for the acronym Dumbass statistical manual

  27. @8:12 although your post is a bit out of line I have to agree with u. If your stuck in a drug addiction do your family a favor and just stay away. The best way to fight this war on drugs is to PROTECT our OWN kids from it. My kids are REMINDED on a daily about the dangers of drug use. If your kids are hooked on drugs it's 100% percent your fault. And be aware of Doctors! Addictions are not started on the streets no more. There started bye doctors.

  30. @ 2:30 it does not take a "genious" with a PHD to understand that doctors and experts as you call them to understand that since labeling drug addiciton a disease, drug consumption has increased - not decreased in this country.
What good do these experts do since labeling drug addicts writing books and such crap in other words???
    All that study is worthless.
