On Saturday, September 8, 2018 Maracame Margarito Díaz González, representative of the Wirikuta Security Council, was murdered when he arrived home. Armed men arrived at his home, located in Aguamilpa, municipality of Nayar, in the state of Nayarit, and shot him in the face, according to the website Somos el Medio.
Margarito was known for his defense of the sacred sites of the Wixárika people, before the arrival of the Canadian mining companies in the Wirikuta area in the state of San Luis Potosí.
This Tuesday the Marakame was dismissed, ie enterred, by his community, who considered him "an honest, fair human being, a man of great faith in his Wixárika culture", according to Somos el Medio.
The Wixárika people demanded that the Governor of Nayarit, Antonio Echevarría García, demand an investigation, clarify the murder and respect indigenous rights.
For the Wixárita people, a Marakame is a type of Huichol "shaman" who knows the ritual texts and knows how to recite them, as well as having a magical ability to communicate with the gods. He is also responsible for the welfare of the community as its guide.
Two other defenders of the Wixárita people were murdered in May 2017: Miguel Vázquez, and his brother Agustín Vázquez Torres. Both were attacked by armed men in the village of Kuruxi Manuwe, in Tuxpan de Baños, Jalisco.
Miguel Vázquez Torres was murdered by a group of hit men in the village of Kuruxi Manuwe (Tuxpan de Baños), Jalisco. At around 6:00 PM on May 20, he was shot with high-caliber firearms. The killers fled in a Toyota Tacoma truck. Seriously injured, Miguel was transferred to a health center, but he did not survive. There, the same aggressors also killed their brother Agustín.
Miguel was about 30 years old and was a primary school teacher in the town of Barranquillas. Between 2014 and March 2017, he was president of communal goods of the Wixárika people of Wuaut , San Sebastián Teponahuaxtlán, an indigenous demarcation that includes Tuxpan de Bolaños. In charge of curating, he managed health, education, development and infrastructure programs for the area. Agustín, in his 40s, was committed to the community and was a defender of human rights, as well as a promoter of indigenous rights.
During the mandate of Miguel, the community managed, on September 22, 2016, the recovery of the properties Piedra Bola and Bola Negra, in the foothills of the Pajaritos mountain range. They are part of a broader process that seeks to return more than 10,000 hectares of the community to indigenous hands, invaded by cattle ranchers.
The murderers of the Vázquez Torres brothers work for the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel (CJNG ), of which Édgar Veytia, "El Diablo", former attorney general of Nayarit, enemy of the Wixaritari and ally of the ranchers of Huajimic, is a member.
On March 29, "El Diablo" was arrested in the United States. The New York State Court accuses him of conspiracy to manufacture, import and distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana in the United States.
In the midst of the conflict, prosecutor Édgar Veytia suggested to the small land owners that, in order to crush the agrarian claims of the Wixaritari, they would denounce them for stealing cattle and planting poppies on their lands, to incriminate them for rustling and drug trafficking. He told them: "Sow poppy, sow marijuana and we enter and accuse the Indians ".
The murders of Miguel and Agustín Vázquez Torres in 2017 and now the village elder Margarito Díaz González are part of the undeclared war against the indigenous peoples living in the country. A war in which the holy alliance of politicians, government authorities, drug traffickers, small landowners and mining entrepreneurs seeks to deprive the indigenous peoples of their lands, territories and natural resources.

DeleteIndigenous peoples have been so raped , pillaged and maginalized it is just heartbreaking.
Not only mining interests, but huge dam projects diverting water , illegal logging and on and on. Mining interests is a really tough issue, I believe they are often transnational corps........

Rasputin comes to mind when I think of shamans. There are countless others as well. I’ve always been fascinated by these guys. Of all the religious practitioners in the world shamans have always captivated me. They’re actually pretty good at some of the things they do. Ayahuasca is something that I’ve always been wanting to try. But for the most part I know I’m too chicken shit to go through with it. Maybe some day when I’m super old I’ll give it a go. Some day when I get over my fear of drugs. Please leave the shamans alone. There’s never really a reason to kill religious leaders unless they’ve perverted their ways. - Sol Prendido
ReplyDeleteYes, don't be afraid its the best thing in the world, real powerful medicine. Its very gentle and will heal you. You just need an open clean heart and a legit Shaman like this man, it will do the rest. It isn't scary.
DeleteI have gone to them to quit drinking and smoking. Shaman did help me i quit drinking, but still smoke Shaman says smoking good for u.He smoked.
DeleteThat’s just it 11:07 I don’t have a clean heart. I actually like doing bad things to bad people. I know myself too well. Which is why I’m afraid of using drugs. A friend of mine tried it in a white padded room. He also claims it’s the best experience. But I’m still hesitant. We’ll see what happens. - Sol Prendido
DeleteThis is bullshit!
ReplyDeleteIt's all about money, from Canadian Mining, put into the dirty, currupted hands of the political members. Poor pheasant, protecting the eco system of the land.

ReplyDeleteThe sad and repeated history of the subjugation and violence perpetrated upon the indigenous people of Mexico. For that matter, more powerful tribes did the same to the weaker tribes. It should be that in the 21st century, society would have evolved from this animal instinct. Even other animals sparring for dominance rarely kill each other. Our weapon technology has surpassed our ability to manage its lethality based on the limits of our human nature.
ReplyDeleteExcellent point 1045... the animal that is called human was supposedly given a way out and to be over the other animals... that way out was a spirit and a soul to not be like other animals... some humans are greedy and corrupt and spiritually dead... money, power, and ironically some forms of religion bring out the animal in man... the same man that was created by a Higher Power and in His Likeness... even if people do not believe in a God just following the Ten Commandments would be better than nothing... people build resentments and harbor feelings of evil towards each other... maybe animals in nature do as well but humans have perfected it...

Maybe it would be better for them if indigenous people historically derided as "savages" actually became savage. Arabs are maligned by the West, but they will take up arms and fight back, sometimes at frightful cost. Arabs have honor and dignity and will make oppressors pay a price.
ReplyDeleteThank you Yaqui for this post/translation for this small article contains so many issues tied together in a nutshell.
ReplyDeleteCanadian mining companies destroying indigenous peoples and land from Papau New Guinea to south America and Mexico.
Ranchers and politicians conspiring with the Narcos to eliminate the last surviving Native peoples from their lands.
Dirty money, dirty industry, and dirty hamburgers, or carne asada, in this case.
more proof that cjng was handpicked by the government to clear out indigenous peoples from their land
ReplyDeleteIts sad how nobody gives a damn about these indigenous communities. I've read read 2 or 3 posts on BB about these people getting murdered for protecting their habitat yet there dozens of comments over which cartel is most powerful.
ReplyDeleteSort of an old story, but might answer your question:

La sombre negra needed in Mexico. Time to return mexico to the people and end these cartel scums lives one by one.
ReplyDeleteThe Canadian mining companies need to be identified and publicized for all to see. Only a piece of the puzzle but a significant one.
ReplyDeleteOh this is just sad news all around....I haven't been this sad until I was old enough to know my name
ReplyDeleteThis is very sad and my heart goes out to the Wixarita, Huichol people. They have struggled for so long against the greed of many who take and abuse their lands in the Sierra Madre Occidental. My prayers continue and I thank Fito Garcia for introducing me to many of the brothers and sisters of the mountains, the true Indigenes de Mexico.
ReplyDeleteThanKS Yaqui. Please keep us posted.
