Protected By Autodefensas, Students Return To School in San Miguel Totolapan

Translated by Valor for Borderland Beat

Guerrero— Protected by autodefensas, students from San Miguel Totolapan returned to school on Monday, March 20, after schools at different educational levels (preschool, primary, secondary, and upper secondary) closed for three months because of the presence of the criminal group “Los Tequileros”.

According to information from the newspaper El Sur, autodefensa members known as “Movimiento de La Paz” are responsible for protecting students.

Federal and state authorities have been ignorant of the problem of violence and insecurity experienced by the inhabitants of the municipality, so that neither members of the different state police units nor the Mexican Army have been present to provide protection in the area.

In the municipal seat, there are three kindergartens, three primary schools, two secondary and upper secondary schools, some of which have closed their doors since January for fear of Los Tequileros.

And this criminal group is the main perpetrator of the kidnappings, extortions, and homicides that have been registered during the last three years in the Tierra Caliente region in Guerrero.

Therefore, autodefensa members have been responsible for providing protection not only to the students, but also to the teachers and workers of these institutions.

El Sur reports that through three trucks, which are used as patrols, they travel the streets of San Miguel Totolapan and have procedures to pass constantly through the schools, in order to see if there is anything new.

Meanwhile, as other members stand guard outside of the campuses, there are others as well that care for the little ones to cross the roads, acting as crossing guards.

  1. Beautiful presence. Citizens making the initiative to provide safety for its youth. Mexico should be ashamed for not bringing peace to this region. Applause to its citizens for taking action against these dirt bags who profit from such senseless behavior.
    Beautiful reading BB.
    Big Kudos

  2. In America (big city like Atlanta) people call the police even if there's a fist fight between two drunk people. The average response time is 5 minutes. There are so many police and they are so bored and everyone here is so reliant on the police for everything that they get called even for something that trivial. The police are now carrying around Naloxone to bring people overdosing from heroin back to life. Police patrol every street corner and they have cameras and other surveillance equipment set up all over the city.

It's such a foreign concept to realize that there are some places where you can't call the police because they don't care about you and they won't show up and they may even be working for the criminals so you can't trust them in the first place. In America it seems we have an overabundance of police presence and they are sticklers for following the law. If you speed 10 mph you get a ticket. If you don't use a blinker you get pulled over. If you throw a cigarette butt on the ground you get ticketed for littering.

Such a huge difference between the police in Mexico and the U.S.

    1. 11:32 Amen. With all the problems in Mexico they don't have 1/10 of the police they need,it's way out of hand. They won't ever get a handle on it without outside help.I remember once travelling through northern Guerrero and it's pretty remote.Going through a small town I stopped when I saw a horse lying in the ditch. It was alive and baking in the hot July sun.It appeared to have a broken leg and couldn't get up.I flagged down 3 cops to try to get that animal some help.No 1 was interested like hey shoot it or track down the owner or take it to the rendering plant.I know it's only an animal but could have lying there for days before it died from thirst or starvation or heat stroke.

    2. In my town, yes, the police often write some pretty lame tickets but they also told us not to call them over small robberies because they just don't have time. They tell us to fill out an online report. Ha!

    3. The biggest difference between the us and mexico police is the ability to "negotiate" with them. I have lived in both countries and seen excellent police response in even smaller mexican cities while seeing the police never show up when called in certain big US cities.

    4. In Chicago many police are dirty and if you call them about prostitution, they will come after you and teach you a lesson.

    5. That's a first. I reside in Chicago.
Never experienced that before, then again depending on where you live.

    6. 11:32 and co.
After more than 200 years of being "america's ameegos", and suffering the exploitation and politics and imperialism that supports among other things the american cops in their princely way of life, only some ignorant sourpuses would be wondering about the state of corruption in mexico with such "great amazement".
I am impressed, muchas gracias, 'ameegos'

"Federal and state authorities have been ignorant of the problem of violence and insecurity experienced by the inhabitants of the municipality, so that neither members of the different state police units nor the Mexican Army have been present to provide protection in the area." ----. Ignorant? Yes, in the sense that they ignore what they know is happening. What they fucking enable to happen. This is why the shit birds fly.

  10. Nice work Valor, as always!

But....I take issue with the statement: "Federal and state authorities have been ignorant of the problem...". The authorities are NOT ignorant of the situation. They know full well what is going on, but greed and corruption are thicker than blood.

Truth is many exist who can make a difference but political corruption always seems to prevail.

    1. @3:12 We do post all comments (that play by the rules). As Buggs said in the last sentence of his policy statement he wrote in 2009 when he started BB

"So play nice and everyone will be a happy family!"

***The policy statement can be accessed in the last paragraph of the box on the right side of the front page labeled "want to contribute?"

BTW 3:12, Thanks for the compliment to BB staff.

  22. Hello dd, it's an honor, really, bs aside. I have been a fan of BB for a minute now. I applaude what you guys do day in day out. I did lay into 4:51pm a little too hard, but given his comment I thought it was appropriate. 4:51pm was a little disrespectful himself. But I get the message loud and clear, we should unite and my response to 4:51 was the opposite. Believe me when I say this dd, I appreciate the info your team puts out. There's no other doing it like BB does, that's why i check in every day....i must say tough love sometimes does work though. Respetos....Michoacán Devil Dog out!!
