Video Teaser: Sean Penn interview with Chapo

Hola Readers, can this stuff get any crazier? DD had the post ready to roll but ran into difficulties but it will be up by morning. BUT since we have been deluged with readers comments advising us of the story, (thank you most gracious readers) I thought I would post the video as we wait for the interview. In case you haven't a clue what I am speaking of, Sean Penn  conducted an interview with Chapo, in October while Chapo was in hiding. It was facilitated by actress Kate Castillo. Some of you will remember Castillo giving an interview saying that between President Pena and Chapo she would trust Chapo.

Mexican authorities are saying that it was because of this interview that they were able to locate and capture him.  Really?  Maybe.  Although it was in October when the interview was conducted, it was immediately before the “big miss” when Chapo got away because he was with his children.

The interview itself is soft, boring and Penn’s lack of narco knowledge is glaring.  Questions like: "Are you a violent man?"  Chapo answers: "no sir". But the article is top rate because it focuses on the “get”, and particulars of setting up the meeting etc.

Chapo confirms he was injured in the October raid, but that his injuries were not that  bad.  He says those rumors of him being in Guatemala or south America were inaccurate, he was home, his home in Sinaloa all the while.....Paz, Chivis

  1. In the pic were el chapo is with el cholo in the car: Why isnt he handcuffed? Also why does he look like he's in the back seat of a uber car?? I figured they would take him out in a armored truck or some sort of humvee.

  7. As you said Penn lacks narco knowledge, but he actually argued everything that I've believed about the Mexican drug war, Chapo, etc. He made the point that Chapo and his men were simple people who really didn't have an option as too what career they chose, the war on drugs is a failure and the USA demand is one of, if not the main reason for the supply, logically. It's hard to deny Chapo has been EXTREMELY violent but why? Kids grow up into this without a choice. Sad cycle. Any BB admins have an opinion on what was said?

    1. 1:39 Greedy US gangsters have created a need for drugs on the US to satisfy their lust for money, by supplying the drug addicts on the US and the world and they get to invest all that money in all kind of enterprises, not el chapo or any other narco...
--it is like "what happened to zhenli ye gone's millions of dollars, euros, pesos and other currency, and the tons of meth precursors he lost to the mexican police???
--No accounting ever, but if Sean Penn went to see el chapo so what? We do not have narco experience either, good for anyone that get an interview, as long as they do not demonize themselves or el chapo or glorify the damn mexican politicians.

Look. I think you are right. The US and Mexican governments are definitely the problem due to their policies. Whether they are both actually taking money is another debate but the 'war on drugs' is a joke. You're right that nobody should be glorifying the government or demonizing El Chapo but at the same time nobody in the media should be glorifying El Chapo or demonizing the government. They should just be telling it like it is. That's what was actually good about his report because whilst he offered a counter narrative to that of the mainstream media, he didn't say that Chapo was a hero either.

  9. I agree to a point. Marginalized children are those I work with, and they have few choices. BUT Chapo's children do, and look at their choice.

I think that if were about drug trafficking, and only drug trafficking, where innocents are not preyed upon then one can say taking drugs form the market, so there are two responsible parties entering into an agreement willingly. I want drugs, I sell drugs. But it isn't so cut and dry. right? This will shock some people, especially since I have not done street drugs, and I lost my only brother to a drug world murder, but I believe all drugs should be legal. An opinion I formulated two years ago after speaking a a renown physician at USC.

IF Chapo truly cared about his people of the sierras, he could build small schools. One room schools like the old days of the U.S. like him most kids of the mountains rely of travelling teachers who sometimes show up. His stop coming when he was 8. I have seen schools in the mountains and rural areas of Mexico like this. A teacher will stay at the school and go home on weekends and for summer. Pay enough and they will come. He could change lives in that way.

As for the "no choice" although they have few choices, and are ignored and marginalized by Mexican society and government, I say look at the most marginalized of people, the indigenous people of Mexico, they bust their ass, farming, crafting, building, creating a living within the boundary of morality and lawfulness. They will never have riches, planes, fancy ranches, fat bank accounts, but they don't have to live their lives running through sewers.

Humble, moral compass intact, against all odds, without embracing the excuse mantra, "but I had no other choice"

    2. Fair enough. Very true Chapo could have sent his children off to europe or somewhere to get an education. And your definitely right that Chapo could build schools in La Sierra. I think he might have done that a bit but mainly he gave medical assistance to people in La Sierra, brought electricity and built churches. However, one could argue that this is done to keep people active in the business, keeping on with the same traditions they have for years and not progressing. I think because as you said these people are ignored and marginalized, there's a feeling that Chapo and everyone else has that they don't want to become part of a society that doesn't understand them. For that I believe in what Penn said. What you said about indigenous people is definitely spot on however, I think they kind of are in the same state of mind, as in they don't want to join the rest of society or the narcos either. Also all legalizing drugs could be the answer, especially to stop the violence.

    3. 2:36 and your point? schools do not look like schools btw sometimes in old school buses, abandon buildings, houses outdoors. I have seen these schools created by parents because the gob will not provide their children education. My friend and i built a school 5 years ago that children met for school in what was once a maquilla bus. no windows and rusty, the parents "sealed" it with cardboard to keep the cold and wind out. inside they did a good job creating a little educational meeting place. We build a nice school the cost is about 30-40k USD for a little 4 room school kitchen and bathroom.

  12. I don't see what is wrong with what Sean Penn did even though the media are calling this interview 'controversial'. Bin Laden was interviewed by a western journalist (before 911) while he was wanted and considered an international terrorist, the Burmese drug baron/warlord Khun Sa was interviewed by an Australian journalist, journalist Guillermo Galdos interviews La Tuta while he was a fugitive, him and numerous other journalists have started contacting people in CDS to get an interview with El Chapo. Nobody criticized them. Difference is Penn is a celebrity, and he was being critical of the drug war. He has been a supporter of Chavez in Venezuela (as said in the article) so they don't like what he says. How could they charge him but not the others? On another note, this is the most obscure thing iv'e seen. This is pretty out of character for Chapo. But if he really is extradited then he's done i guess.

First I thought he was genuinely on the run, then I became certain that he was being protected, especially after his escape. And now I have no idea again. Can't say if he'll be extradited or not but a lot of powerful people will be very nervous right now. The truth I think is that we will never understand the people from La Sierra. If you've lost someone close to you, nobody should tell you your wrong in what you think, however, since we will never understand what it's like to grow up the mountains, we shouldn't judge them honestly.

Then came July 2015. El Chapo's prison break. The world, and particularly Mexico and the United States, was up in arms. How could this happen?! The DEA and the Justice Department were furious. The fact that Mexican Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong had refused El Chapo's extradition to the United States, then allowed his escape, positioned Chong and the Peña Nieto administration as global pariahs"

    7. @2:34 if I only had one question to ask it would be

"Chapo can you hook me up with Mayo for an interview?"

just kidding ...although Mayo has proven to have depth missing with the chapo man.

Kidding aside, I would ask about Mayo, how he is, and if their personal or working relationship has changed.

lots of rumors, but I would like to know

    8. Chivis your spot on. All journalists would give an arm and a leg to get an interview with El Chapo.
I would have asked him about El Mayo too, but basically just about the key people in the drug trade right now. Caro Quintaro, Mencho, if El Azul is really dead. The answers that Chapo gave were short and simple. Like Penn said in the article, he seemed nervous on camera. Contrary to how he was described by Penn when they met off camera where he seemed confident.

    9. excellent choice of a question if only allowed one. The Mayo factor is a big question and controversial in the past 2 years. Azul also but he would not have answered that question.

    11. @Chivis. How about the take of Alfredo Corchado, the author of "Midnight in Mexico"?

Tweet: "To describe #chapo #SeanPenn mtg as an interview is an epic insult to journalists who died in name of truth."

      In the Washington Post, today:

“When you’re not really challenging the person and have agreed to submit the story for approval, it sounds more like a Hollywood entertainment,” Corchado, who was recently named the borderlands director of Arizona State’s Walter Cronkite’s School of Journalism, told The Washington Post. “It’s not on par with the sacrifice of many of my colleagues in Mexico and throughout the world who have lost their lives fighting censorship.”

"Why Sean Penn’s El Chapo meeting was an ‘epic insult’ to imperiled Mexican journalists"

    12. @Chivis, part II: Today on NPR:

"Perhaps the most vocal of Sean Penn's critics, though, were those people who are also most familiar with his article's subject: the Mexican and Mexican-American journalists who regularly report on Guzmán."

Interview With 'El Chapo' Draws Backlash From Mexican Journalists

    13. Hey DR thank you for this, I would not have seen it otherwise.

Where I agree with Corchado, is that Penn's piece is not journalism. As Lucio said to me this am "it is not journalism, it is entertainment, and fluff entertainment at that".

That said, Corchado is probably is feeling the green eyed monster. I bought his book but could not finish even half of it, BTW.

Where it hits home is that one would think in prep for the interview he would have had counsel from those who are in Mexico and know narco history best. He would not have to have even said it was for a chapo interview.

I think Corchado is a drama queen saying it is insulting to those brave journalists who died in the line of duty in Mexico. I also think it is unfair. I find myself in an uncomfortable position of defending Penn, but as I see it he did nothing wrong legally, or even ethically. for me he simply did a shitty job, and many narco reporters would have and could have done an amazing job with this opportunity, asking relevant questions.
