Imprisoned autodefensa leader, Dr. Mireles confined to wheel chair, denied visitors

Lucio R. Borderland Beat

Through a video uploaded to the social network Facebook, Axel Dames, a spokesman for self-defense groups in Michoacán, reported that physicians say the founder of Michoacán autodefensa Dr. José Manuel Mireles Valverde, deteriorates rapidly because of the systematic denial of medical attention from the "authorities" of the Hermosillo, Sonora, prison he is incarcerated in.  He has been held in prison since June 27, 2014.

In the video, Axel Dames complains the courts should legally proceed for the immediate release of Dr. Mireles,  because required urgent medical attention has not been provided, and is the being obligation of the State to guarantee the safety of their prisoners.

Court rulings have been favorable to Mireles, but have acted dilatory in proceeding with other court procedures needed for his release.

Aside from being denied proper medical care, in a letter cited by the website ‘’Sin Embargo”, Mireles
says he has asked the magistrate in charge of his case, to file a claim against the “authorities” who he says are denying his right to receive visitors, for 10 months visitors have been denied access to him.

“Magistrate of the first Unitary Tribunal of the 10th Circuit”. Hereby I ask you for assistance to assure I am allowed visits and that my rights are respected, rights that every prisoner has.  For  10 ½ months they have completely denied visits by  anyone attempting  to see me, including those who are assisting in the  issues of my captivity (…).”

Only his attorney has been allowed access to Dr. Mireles, no one on his list of visitors have been granted a visit.  Including his advocates such as general José Francisco Gallardo or el padre Alejandro Solalinde,

Dr. Mireles did not complete his rehabilitation for injuries he suffered in a plane crash.  He left Mexico City to return to Michoacán because of the takeover of the autodefensa union by Estanislao Beltrán, who unilaterally, without benefit of a vote, ousted Dr. Mireles and took over as the AD spokesman.  Beltran began working closely with Alfredo Castillo to oust Dr Mireles.

Dr. Mireles had given candid interview with the publication El Pais of Spain.  The El País interview incensed Alfredo Castillo, the federal appointed security chief in Michoacán, who seized the opportunity while Dr. Mireles was recuperating, to intensify his mission of disbandment of the autodefensa movement and rendering the popular and loved Dr. Mireles powerless.

Castillo said in a recent interview that “Manuel Mireles not only wanted to control Mexico, but wanted to control all of Latin America”.

Castillo’s threats did not quiet Dr. Mireles.  With respect to dealing with “problems” such as the “genuine autodefensas” especially their leaders, the government has favored imprisonment. Hundreds of autodefensas are languishing in prison.

Others have been murdered.  There is in fact but one original leader remaining free of the “coastal” autodefensas, considered the true self defense group and that is Semeí Verdía.  Semei has suffered two assassination attempts on his life including one of this week.

In the case of Dr. Mireles, his civil and human rights have not only been trampled upon, his rights have been shredded beginning with the arrest its self.

In the arrest, he was blindfolded, hooded, cuffed in back, and flown around in a helicopter for hours.  He later said it was terrifying as he thought he might have been shoved into the waters below.

Dr. Mireles was taken to Morelia and transferred to the Federal Social Rehabilitation Center No. 11 in Hermosillo, Sonora.

In Morelia he was then denied the right to call or meet with his attorney for hours.  And denied food necessary for a diabetic diet, and not given his insulin which he injects three times daily.

For further humiliation his famous mustache and white hair were shaven clean.  But the worst was yet to come; he became ill, the result of improper diet and proper diabetic management.  He has spent almost as much time in the hospital as in his cell.  Hi Sister Virginia “Vicky” Mireles says his health has deteriorated to the point he may soon require amputation.

He began using a wheelchair around the middle of this month when he fell and sustained an injury, some reports say it was a fracture of the spinal column.  He is now non-ambulatory.

His attorney Javier Livas, reported that the leader and founder of the AD lay in bed for three days before being given medical treatment.

“My client is treated as a prisoner of war, as an enemy of the state, in the maximum security prison. We have a person that is a civil hero, one who the government had arrested to remove a problem.”

Immobility will compromise his circulation and may cause irrecoverable damage to his limbs and possible amputation.

In a recent and rare communication, he sent a letter to his friend Jorge Vazquez.  In the letter he stated that visitors are being blocked from visiting him.

Axel Dames is not a name I have previously heard of in connection to Dr. Mireles.

    1. Absolutely, remember Roosevelt? It will take more than a wheelchair to keep this hero down.

but he needs to be free, and quickly.

    2. It only proves that the entire government from the President down is corrupt. I have boycotted Mexico and hope many other Americans do the same.

  7. I can't even read about the tragedy of what is happening to this man without feeling sick about it. I am not even Mexican but my young daughter is half I am ashamed of what is happening there. We spend a lot of time down in Mexico. Why would someone make such a flippant comment about how someone could still be pres in a wheelchair...an anonymous comment!

    3. I did not mean to post a comment that could be interpreted in casting the good doctor in a negative light or to attempt humor, at his expense. I meant that if the government thinks a wheelchair will stop people from wanting him in office or keep him from doing anything in his power for a better Mexico, well they are hugely mistaken in their thinking. and I was thinking of Roosevelt like the other comment referred to.

Mireles is one of those people we need more of in mexico, the rare mix of integrity, honor, intelligence, AND willing to give his life to his ideals, for a Mexico that is secure with hope for all citizens. I wasn't sure about who the good guys were or bad guys or how to formulate the distinction between the two. But at the end of the day, Semei, Dr Mireles, and the late hernandez salcedo are a massive cut above the rest.

    4. They are trying to kill Mireles without actually pulling the trigger. Hoping to ask for forgiveness and forgetfullnes from the people/sheep of mexico. I live in mexico in the campo and see how the people are brainwashed by the status quo from birth to be submissive, dependent even. No power, no clean water, no education and no jobs. All the young men in my town are grifos and don't know or care about Mireles. If I get involved in politics of any kind here I can be expelled from here. I really feel for Mexico.

  8. Mexico allows gerber to go free, even with hard evidence of his relationship to tuta, but imprisoned Mireles, tortures him physically and probably emotionally. mexico will remain fucked up until people care about what is happening and not look the other way.

extrajudicial killings should be a concern, and social cleansings, unjust imprisonments, political assassinations, should be the concern of all. I could not believe the other post about the 42 killed in michoacan and people, granted they are probably americans, are thinking it is fine.

allowing police to take matters in their own hands kills good people also, and the destroys human rights. now the police are arrested who killed mayor candidate Enrique hernandez.

the problem is after a few months the killers always are allowed to walk free when the cameras leave. I am very fortunate I was able to leave when I was 10 years old.

    1. yes but just a few americans who will never represent americans as a whole.

those are the same ignorant, uneducated people who cry fowl regarding those 'illegals' and immigration issues.

then there is the 'other' American group. thinking that a justified killing by a police officer is never justified, even when a thug reaches for a gun.

can you imagine If in the united state had there been 3 mass killings possibly all 3 extrajudicial killings by feds?

and a total of 107 citizens killed in a few months in 3 shootings as in mexico, by the feds?

I bet the same stupid people commenting on the mexico story ,would also cheer if it was killings in south chi town. so central LA, or Detroit, no matter who the killed were. 'good riddance' I can hear it now. as long as it isn't in a 'nice/white' neighborhood

The reason people are glad to see these cartel people go out, is because it will eventually allow the good people to live a good life.

We dont kill because we hate people. We kill because we love people.

Any one of these cartel mosters is just as bad or worse than Hitler, or any other crazy killer you can name. Vlad the Impaler may be a closer comparison.

  10. Here is the situation in mexico money makes everything go Smooth even if you are a killer or a drug trafficker....Dr mireles unfortunately is under a different category, is a political prisoner enemy of the state.....and here is the bad news, there is no way to bribe the government, mainly because they want to send a message to everyone trying to revolt, "hey you Mexicans you fuck with government and we fuck you on the ass super hard" Dr mireles is a good man that just happened to pick the wrong battle against a giant that has power and money, PRI.....if he would have taken a deal or sell out when he had the chance he would be out and about......remember in mexico there is only room for PRI...ANYONE going against it will suffer the consequences..... DR mireles said it very clearly on a speech on Universidad Autonoma de Mexico , "yo se que me van a matar o a meter me en la carcel, pero que la lucha siga" so so far I see no one fighting? ??? He knew and he just go victimized...

  16. Who's the bald guy in the picture. If that is Dr. Mireles that is clearly not him. Something smells fishy as usual and the thought of him being left to die in prison isn't far from reality. Clearly, human rights organizations worldwide don't give a shit about what's going on because they have allowed the Mexican government to keep him falsely imprisoned. Fool me once, what a shame. Fool me twice, I'm to blame.

    2. The word Raza translates to "breed"; i.e., as in a specific breed of horse or livestock. The word itself isn't usually racist. It is meant to address co-nationals or a group of people, usually of the same nationality that share the same values, customs and ideology. Again, it is not meant as an insult; merely an attempt to address all like-minded Mexicans.

    3. wtf you talking bout? we are not a herd of livestock. Raza simply means race in Spanish nothing more nothing less.

La Raza is the race. when I was in college I belonged to the La Raza social advocacy group. it is used to represent "the Mexican race" or in a wider perspective La Raza Hispánica. but you won't hear Mexican say that, puro mexicano, la raza o la raza chicano

-- if the doctor's partners decided they had enough and to cash in, that is their problem, and if Dr Mireles chose martyrdom, that is up to him, I suggested that he should get out of there, and find better friends and help somewhere else, he freely chose to risk health and opportunity, just to expose himself to the government decisions, but he got away from his wife, that is the only good thing he got out of it, she muy bigotona...

those words from Castillo ARE SO TELLING. Its the words of a shameless repugnant criminal reading talking point memos handed down by the true criminals of mexico the PRI.

I think they will torture him to death by withholding neccesarry medical care or kill him with their own hands and fabricate a story

  27. Man, Alredo Castillo is one real life piece of human garbage. I wish there was some way for Doc. Mireles to see how many people around the world still care for his welcome being. This is truly a disgrace what the Mexican government has allowed to happen to him. Doctor, you set a shining example, and led your people with rock solid conviction, I will try to do my part to see that you are not forgotten. Stay strong and take solace in the fact that your example has given hope to those without it. You will be a catalyst for change still.

Lesson is, never ever give up your rights. You need another revolution in your country, and this time a real Bill of Rights.

  35. Mexico

In Mexico, the US is funding the construction of up to 16 new federal prisons and is advising an overall prison “reform” based on the US and Colombian models. The Federal Center for Social Readaptation (CEFERESO) #11 in Hermosillo, Sonora is the first Mexican prison built with private investment and will be managed by a for-profit company for the next 20 years. True to form, the opening of Ceferso #11 was occasioned with the massive transfer of 1,849 prisoners from all over Mexico. Five months after the transfer, prisoners were still being denied access to family and legal defense teams.

Mexico’s National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH) visited CEFERESO #11 in October, 2013 a year after its installation to investigate conditions in Mexico’s for-profit prison and reported that the institution had “…even graver deficiencies than those found in other jails of the Republic of Mexico without private capital.” The abuses noted by the CNDH included arbitrary and sudden transfers, being held for long periods incommunicado, being kept in cells for excessively long periods, no classification system for prisoners, insufficient food, poor quality of health services, lack of sports, recreation and cultural activities, lack of work and job training, and insufficient personnel. In only 4 months, the CNDH received 47 complaints regarding sudden transfers to CEFERSO #11 without warning or notice either to families or legal reps.

And while exact figures are not readily available, reports from a number of sectors in Mexico indicate a significant increase in politically motivated arrests since US involvement, including notable political detentions of labor and indigenous leaders.

Once more, the Drug War is the main reason cited for US involvement in the Mexican prison system. But in a country that has been itself described as a “Narco-state” with a 98% impunity rate for violent crime, one must question the veracity of this justification just as we must in Colombia, Honduras and elsewhere. According to a report by the Universal Periodic Review (EPU by its Spanish initials) of the United Nations Human Rights Council in coalition with three Mexican human rights organizations, 60% of those incarcerated in Mexico are there for minor crimes
