el Rancho del Sol; 42 dead "had no chance"; police fired from a helicopter: witnesses

Borderland Beat posted and translated by DD republished from el Diario and AP story on Yahoo News.

photo shows how easy it would be to encircle the ranch
The showdown at el Rancho del Sol where on Friday May 22, 42 alleged members of the CNJG and one Federal Police were killed has raised many questions as to what really happened.  The stories posted by Lucio give the governments version of what happened as well as the doubts raised by many security experts, the families of some of those killed and alleged to be CNJG, and many in the media.  The government has not always been truthful in their reports of what happened in previous clashes with cartels.

It turns out there were at least 2 witnesses to the "clash".  They were not onsite at the ranch, but close by on the highway that runs in front of the ranch and on the back perimeter of the ranch..  While they cannot give all of the details of what happened, they can give  valuable clues  to what happened.

One of the witnesses is a resident of the very small village of Puerto de Vargas consisting of about 100 inhabitants and is only about a kilometer from the ranch gate.  There is just pasture land between Puerto de Vargas and the ranch and the witness had cattle pastured there.

To enter Puerta de Vargas one must take a very small deviation, which you can barely catch sight of, from Highway 37 that runs from Ecuandureo to Zamora, in the state of Michoacan, which has a partially paved road.

"I was looking around and I saw  the helicopter that brought police, and from that it all ended ", as he relates to the commissioner.(DD presumeablly he was referring to a Human Rights Commissoner)   The ranch "had no opportunity to defend a lot."

The ranch,  El Sol borders this town and in their pastures, inhabitants of Puerta de Vargas were accustomed to take their animals to graze.  The ranch at times hired villagers and gave them good jobs..

But that changed two weeks ago when the land was taken by about 50 strangers, who went to the village  to give the villagers  new rules: do not enter or loiter around the ranch.

"They said they would not kill us, but for us to follow our usual routine, that they  would not take our money, but we had to stay silent and not hang around the ranch," said one local resident.

A man who acts as caretaker and  watches the road entrance to Vargas said the people who had always worked at the ranch were always peaceful people and that a few months ago the owner had rented the ranch to "one of my compadres" who lives in the town of Vistahermosa, because the owner now lives in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

They came and stole the ranch?

"Yes, and they said, you keep working, Nomás we are here, but you just keep working and they did not threaten anyone or anything.

The story that the ranch was rented was confirmed by the mayor of Tanhuato Jose Ignacio Cuevas Perez, who said that property was for  years worked as a producer, packer and marketer of alfalfa.

But that changed after the first of May, when members of CJNG shot down a helicopter in Jalisco, and the elements that took part in bringing down that helicopter   took refuge in the Rancho El Sol.

THE OPERATION

Just when the sun was rising on  Friday, May 22 a convoy of federal police came to the village of Puerta de Vargas and asked some of the local residents how to get onto the Rancho del Sol without using the front gate.  They received the support of the people of Puerta de Vargas and one citizen gave them directions on how to get around to the back side of Ranch. As it turned out that senor turned out to be one of the witnesses who watched the balacera a couple of hours later.

According to the villagers, the police soon surrounded the  112-acre ranch and the operation began  when the helicopter arrived.

It was from the Black Hawk helicopter of federal police where most of the 42 alleged criminals were shot. They fired several bursts from a  machine gun continuously while federal agents took advantage to finish surrounding the entire field.

"The pilot raised and leveled the helicopter, then settled back and rrrrr! Buzzed pa'acá pa'allá and bullets. The helicopter was the one who killed them all," says Senor witness while riding his horse.

It was past eight o'clock.

Backed by fire from helicopter, the rest of the policemen could join the attack from several points. "They burst of fire was continuos, not only from the helicopter, but from various positions.  From where I was I saw  one shoot at the  cops.

Many people in the village went into hiding for nearly three hours at their homes. "

"I was watching everything. From here the shooting was heard, but look, from this point I saw the helicopter that brought the cops . It was only one but it was strong the shooting was fanning , was heard very strong, this helicopter was the one who killed them all, " he told the commissioner.

After the shooting stopped two other helicoptors appeared seemingly to clean up the mess and transport the police on the ground who had been involved the shoot out.

Another witness, who works for the Green Angels, which is a rescue unit operated by the state to assist motorist on the highways, adds that federal police arrived at the scene because they were pursuing armed suspects they had met on the highway. There he saw the persuit and how this group of men sought safety at the ranch.

"After they get to the ranch  a helicopter arrived here on the road and started spraying bursts of rounds.  Bullets and grenade explosions were heard, and gradually a shitload of federal police arrived, , then came  the military to lend support but the shooting was already over. I saw that it appeared the helicoptor was following in  pursuit on the highway and then these guys went into the ranch.

No one knew in the municipalities of Tanhuato or Ecuandureo knew any of the  42 killed in the confrontation or the rest of men going in and out of the place, but there was a population who had contact with them, the same Vargas Gate,

That changed 13 days ago when the group arrived at  the ranch.

"Many of us did business with the ranch and some people from here worked there, but when the group arrived at the ranch, we got out of there. "

Tanhuato Mayor Jose Ignacio Cuevas Pérez, explained that after several months of being empty fields, about year and a half ago there was  movement back into the ranch, we again saw tractors, cultivation was carried and they cut and packaged  alfalfa.

"There was even a time when I saw that they grew corn, like any other agricultural land in the region. The gate  was a wire mesh , and  was not was the gateway that is currently painted white. I know because I step out there very often for many years, "he specified.

He said that about 3 years ago there was a sign on the front of the property trying to sell or rent it but he did not know the owner of the property and did not know whether it was part of a denunciation of dispossession (a forced taking)..

Interviewed in his office, the mayor Michoacan, questioned the version that hours after the death of 42 people and a federal police announced the authority, which ensures that all was due to the response of an attack against police forces.

"The way the arrangement of bodies, some have no clothes, looked like a massacre rather than an operational" external Cuevas Perez, mayor of the municipality that owns a fraction of the building in which the events occurred.

In a story yesterday the AP reported that Mexican officials stand by their account.

DD. The government account explained the lack of a concentration of bodies that you usually find in a big shootout was because the when they were asked to surrender they refused and some took off running in an attempt to escape.  That was why their bodies were scattered in the fields.  Looking  at the photo below and you have to ask yourself "would you run across those open fields surrounding the buildings to try to escape when a helicopter gunship was spraying the place with machine gun fire".
Enrique Galindo, head of Mexico's federal police, told local media  "a helicopter gunship had participated in the shootout and that its role had been decisive. "If the helicopter had not arrived, the death toll might have been different."

National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said at a news conference later Monday that the helicopter had been hit three times by bullets from an AR-15 assault rifle.

Authorities detained three people and confiscated 38 semi-automatic weapons, two smaller arms, a grenade launcher and a .50-caliber rifle. They had initially said they seized 40 weapons.

Speaking to the television network Televisa earlier Monday, Rubido said tests on the bodies of the victims showed they had been shot "from a considerable distance ... dozens of meters (yards)," ruling out anybody having been finished off at close range. "

Families of some of the men killed on Friday told The Associated Press that after viewing the remains of their loved ones, they doubted the official account. Relatives gathered at a local morgue said one body was missing an eye and had facial bruising, another had its teeth knocked inward. Another had a gunshot in the top of the head.

Video of the battle obtained by The Associated Press showed federal police officers coming under fire.

DD: The more we find out, the more questions we have.  where is that video AP?

  2. Of course the 42 dead had no "chance' of survival, it was a planned REVENGE massacre ordered by the Mexican State government for the downing of a police helicopter a few weeks ago by CJNG. This is how killers are formed in the armed forces of Mexico and these "officers" that carry out orders like these are the kind of people the cartels seek to bribe and become henchemen for them with great success. Violence only leads to more violence regardless of who they were targeting, but I doubt anybody can get that through their THICK heads!

    3. PAYBACK. Because the judiciales know for a fact that detener leads to a paid-off juez, endless layers of amparos, and other comedy.

PAYBACK will eventually lead to extrajudicial killing of innocent. It is inevitable. Nothing substantial is being done to drastically modify the criminal justice system in Mexico. This is a preview of an upcoming train wreck that will further destroy the tiny remaining sliver of credibility that la republica has in the western hemisphere. Gobernacion demands respect in the world community. What exists instead of respect is cruel canned laughter.

  8. We all know the Mexican military and police forces routinely assassinate people wether they're criminals or not! My wife's aunt and uncle witnessed how 5 people were assassinated by members of the army in Reynosa several years ago, they were unarmed, laying on the ground face down with there hands on top of their heads when they summarily executed! It was early morning, done in front of several witnesses in a heavily populated neighborhood, nothing in the news for days then a brief press release from SEDENA with the typical "patrol fired upon, soldiers repelled the attack and several armed civilians were killed in the exchange" story!

    1. This is true. The only reason that the people from Vargas were willing to talk is because their whole town is hooked up with the Sinaloa Cartel.

My father grew up in the area, and let me know that Vargas were a bunch of murderers. That is how they made their money. Basically that ranch was known to be the place to go to when you wanted a hired gun to kill someone.

When they didn't have work, they went out to kill and steal. Not an honest one in the bunch.

  15. To put them all fifty in one place that is totally out of cover AND has numerous witnesses nearby? It don't seem to show that much tactical ability, apart from poor integration of connection to any backup of support here and there. Also, I bet they all fifty started using their cellphones, a feat which would have made for easy detection and a peak in software monitoring unusual patterns over mobile networks. And the way of listening into a cell conversation by tapping into the cell tower /antenna serving the surrounding village(s) would involve getting the data (conversations are data too) of ALL traffic over that antenna. Normally by using software, all the conversations / data of cellphone numbers one would not be interested in would be filleted out, but in this situation that fact would give them all. And then, fifty numbers coming online via one cell tower that are new to that area all at once, and they were probably monitoring one or two numbers of possible suspects already as points of interest, so that ALSO would have lead them straight on to their location. I am damn certain the only reason Mayo is alive is, he uses no cell phones and probably no radio - at max he'd have someone make a call for him inbetween a lot of casual babble that wouldn't stand out. Making him if not the only, one of the very few Narcos to be smart and surveillance-savvy enough to make it without falling into the electronics surveillance trap(s)..
Even Chapo, whilst this is far from unknown facts or requiring too hard a bit of logical, analytical thinking, could not get any of his key men to show some discipline regarding this. Just about all of them got caught through one or another form of such communications methods.

    1. What are you babbling about?

      Delete
    2. Agreed, 50 cell-phones would spike and bring heat, that ought to be one of the first issues to address for any counter-surveillance. More obvious though is the fact that the police wanted Revenge for their helicopter being shot down and these 50 sicarios in the ranch seemed to make a perfect target at that time. Would anything like this have happened if those previous battles in Jco hadn't gone down? Aside from the cell-phone and conversation data, etc. etc., isn't just a case of you massacre my people, we massacre yours back?

    2. Black hawks are Utility Helicopters (UH). They are usually used for transporting troops, medivac or light supplys. They somerimes mount door guns like a 50 cal.. they have redundent systems and controls. This makes them resistent to failing from small arms fire. In this case, the PF used it as an attack /support platform and probably from a pretty high altitude above ground level. The helo that was downed recently in Mexico was not a Blackhawk and was probably hovering near the ground, offloading troops. If it was in fact downed by an RPG, it had to have been from fairly close range. An Attack Helecopter (AH) like a Cobra would be able to tear up the ranch from so far away that the narcos wouldn't even hear or see the bird before they get obliterated. That is what I would call a deadly helecopter, But, you are right. Dead is dead! Look up cobra attacks on youtube. Also spectre (plane) gunships.

    4. @2:25 just so you know Mexico in the past year purchased 21 battle ready gunships from the USA. 3 were just approved and delivered. The armament the USA supplied on the house was for each of the choppers six M134 7.62mm machine guns for the helicopters, which fire up to 6,000 rounds a minute. These are six separate 6 barreled Gatling guns for each gunship. These were not for the better part troop haulers that ripped these cartel POS's to shreds, this was the real deal McCoy so with each gun ripping away thats up to 36,000 rounds a minute on all 6 together. Thats hamburger material LOL. ---check out this article of the weapons purchases from all of Mexico. 24. Well I sure as heck don't take anything the so called family members might say as proof of wrong doing. It is quite common for them to be in denial. Ask Chapo mother and she'd say he is a farmer, nothing more. If these were innocent people, what exactly were they doing there? This witness gives the best account of what occurred. I am sure they planned on farming, but not in the way a real farmer does. Also in the last post, about this, I asked about records of weapons. Here the answers came through. These are criminals. Either Mexico want to do away with this or they don't. Everytime a massive amount of criminals are killed, here comes a questionnaire and a conspiracy theory. IAt this point it would be wise to question the mayor more. This is not a human rights issue, so stop trying to make it some over the top crime. For once the a cartel got what it deserved. Its sad it is going to take retaliation from CJNG to make you folks believers. The story is over, move on.

  31. You guys have raised some good points which give rise to some new questions which because of the lack of transparency of the Mexican govt. we will probably never know the answers.

The issue of the 3 survivors raises some questions. The govt. says they asked all of the people and gave them a chance to surrender and that only these 3 agreed to surrender. When was the offer to allow them to surrender made? By bull horn from police on the ground? From the Blackhawk? Did the 3 come walking out before the shooting started or were they simply 3 that hid and were still alive when the shooting stopped.? The witness who was close to the perimeter on the back side of the ranch said nothing about hearing the govt. asking them to surrender.
Those questions become relevant when we start looking at the question of whether all 42 killed and 3 arrested were all CJNG. Could some of those have been farm workers? Some of the family members said their loved ones went there to work on the farm. When the "group of 50" went into the village and gave the people new instructions they told them "continue with your work, but don't loiter at the ranch". That sounds like instructions to workers at the ranch more than rules for the general population.
It is the time of the year to harvest alfalfa and that could account for having a large work crew at the ranch. If there were 20 farm workers there, are their deaths acceptable collateral damage for killing the CJNG? If there were 10 or just 5?
Could the helicopter come in low and fired a missile or rocket into a out building or vehicle and then over loud speakers announced "you are surrounded and you have one minute to come out with hands in the air or we will level everything to the ground".
I don't know the answer to those questions, but if it turns out that a significant number of the dead were innocent farm workers, what message did that send CJNG? I seems to me it will give CJNG the opportunity to say, "yes we have attacked government forces because the govt. is corrupt. But we don't attack innocent civilians. The govt. is the one who does that".

    1. I read in a US article the 3 were hiding behind mattresses.

I think some of you watch too much TV. If the police come in chasing someone who shot at them from a place full of suspected murderous cartel members that shot at them when they arrived, the police would not stand around with bullhorns asking for surrender. They would shoot back and shoot to kill.

The top photo actually shows how difficult t would be from a tactical standpoint to surround the ranch with ground forces, because ground forces would be completely exposed and have no cover. That's why the helicopter was so heavily involved.

    4. CJNG has punteros/look-outs everywhere. Guys on the corner, at the bus stop, Pemex stations, intersections, taxi drivers, ect. Military or Federal Convoys are tracked from the moment they are formed. You think, that a CJNG encampment was stumbled upon by a Police Convoy and the Convoy caught the suspected CJNG sicarios/hitmen off guard? I don't know how it played out. But I do know that 43 CJNG sicarios were not caught off guard. And if that is a given, then the other scenario, is CJNG knew that a convoy was on the way and the Convoy was so much superior in battle that the the CJNG only killed one? A waiting for battle, group of 43, armed CJNG sicarios, would have been in position for an assault, guys on the roof, in a tree, behind a rock, ect...they would have taken some police/soldiers down with them. Then what happened? Either they were not all CJNG or some were picked up elsewhere and brought in for the show/slaughter.

I don't know the answer to those questions either. The smoke in the air does give sense to the helicopter firing into the building. After the helicopter firing, the fatal injuries give sense to a grounded "free for all" murderous rampage. The whole ideology appears to throw Nieto face first into the bloody dirt and with the outcome challenging Obama. It will not appear to send CJNG a message what so ever.

But from the outside looking in, chances are most of them would have been released and back on the streets. For some unknown reason that scenario is happening more and more in Mexico. There are way too many innocent lives at stake to just have a revolving door for this scum. The prisons are overflowing, no trials for anyone to hear of. So many captured and you never hear of a sentencing. I guess at some point it gets to be very annoying to see by any military or police officer.
