Body with skinned face is confirmed as being one of the 37 missing normalistas

Borderland Beat posted by Lala
A macabre image of a man whose face was skinned, has circulated social networks.  It was reported as being that of one of the 4 dozen student teachers (normalistas) missing since last weekends violence in Iguala.

Today, "normalistas" from Iguala marched again, carrying a banner with a photo of Julio César Mondragón, with a woman and a newborn. He had just entered the school  of Ayotzinapa a month ago.

He is the man in the photo.

People questioned the photo was real not not,  possibily being photoshopped, but the wife of the victim stepped forth and confirmed the photo is authentic.

The fate of the 38 students still missing remians in question.

Witnesses state that on the night of Saturday, Sept. 27, a terrified, Mondragón ignored the cries of his fellow students who thought it best to stay together, and he fled after a a group of hit men fired at students and teachers, who were from the Guerrero State Coordinator of Education Workers (Ceteg), they were giving a press conference after being attacked by the municipal police, when the new attack took place.

Mondragón disappeared into the night and seen next a day later, murdered and horribly mutilated.

His parents, and those of Daniel Solís Gallardo, a native of Zihuatanejo, did not want a tribute at the teaching school. The body - what was left of it - of Mondragón, was transferred to the Federal District.

Representatives of Ayotzinapa´s teaching school were horrified and couldn't  find words to describe how they felt having their classmate found in such a state, "What kind of police, what kind of person can do something like this?", said one of the school leaders.

It is an outrage that this story has received almost no coverage outside Mexico and little coverage within its borders.  Racism alive and well in Mexico.

  1. Why? Why would someone do this? I can at least conceivably understand why a drug cartel member would do this to another cartel member, or even to an innocent who owed him protection money, but why to a student teacher? Beat him, kill him even, but why go out of your way to skin and mutilate him?? I can't even wrap my head around it.

    2. Some mexicans do treat the full on indigeneous mexicans with racism BUT we must not confuse the opinion of the writer with a fact. THE FACT IS "racism alive and well in mexico" is simply the writers opinion. The fact is... This could have happened to any mexican & there would be no coverage outside of Mexico. The mexican could have been of any complexion and there would still be no justice served, or are you telling me that of the 100,000 dead citizens since the war on drugs NONE have been light skinned and all indigenous? No i'm positive there's been mexicans of all colors assassinated by the criminals without genuine justice being served.

What cartel is responsible for killing all these teachers and why? 13. @ 3:18 p.m. "Racism is alive and well." What does his race have to do with this?"

Well, the great majority of these student teachers come from small, rural villages with indigenous, darker, populations.

Yesterday, while more than 40 of these rural student teachers are missing (presumed killed by narcos working for the Guerrero state government), Osorio Chong was addressing protesting students at the elite IPN University in Mexico City.

These IPN students have the usual complaints about the administration, but alumni from IPN include former presidents and business leaders, i.e., the white power elite.

    1. Dumb... White power elite?? Bahaha you must not understand the complexities of the Mexican people. Is osorio chong not up there in MX elite? Is he white? What about Peña Nieto, he looks pretty mestizo to me. Mexicans have light and dark skinned family all within the same family tree. Mexicans tend to range from brown light brown to very light, they could all be brothers too and come out different colors. i'm beginning to wonder if you know what a Mexican looks like? Maybe you think all mexicans look like central americans or the indigenous populations of that are usually isolated from Mexican Society? Idk

    4. I could bet you that those light skinned mexicans are related to a dark skinned mexican. I think people have the wrong idea here. Theres a difference between a dark mexican and a full on indigenous person living in MX. They do ignore the indigenous areas, michoacan not as much (calderon was from michoacan) BUT the writer threw that in there out of no where... No one knows if it's ignored for racist reasons. I highly doubt it. Death is everywhere in mexico... And it is always ignored regardless of the region

  22. there is no other explanation. I lived in Guerrero for 4 years, Michoacan for 2.

If we take the facts of this story:

over 4 dozen teachers or students studying to becoming teachers, go missing or killed.
Team bus of soccer players attacked 3 killed

Attacks carried out by hooded municipal police for organized crime
    Previous similar crimes have happened
Mayor linked to GU and blamed by citizens for being culpable in these crimes
same goes for his wife who allegedly had 8 leaders of a social movement kidnapped to be executed, 3 fled, 3 or 4 killed 1 still missing assumed dead

Taking all these facts, yet the press is largely ignoring the story, or worse are too stupid to link the story together. At least at BB all the segments can be accessed.
if this happened in Monterrey, NL this would be in every media source around the world.

This is not an unheard of occurrence.

Last year dozens of indigenous children were kidnapped in Mich. many were from Jalisco and did not speak Spanish. They were tortured and raped.
I bet almost none of you even know about that. It was part of an article here at BB.

This has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with umm the fact that mexico is the most dangerous place to be a reporter & that if you report on certain issues it might cost you your life. Reporters and the media are probably dying inside to get this out to as many places as possible, but like in tamualipas michoacan tijuana & an endless amount of other places the reporters are too afraid to report it.

I appreciate your thinking, but allow me to share why I did not put it on the second page. My usual position is to put all dismemberments or decaps on second page. And I would say a skinned face is as graphic. So I am with you there.

HOWEVER, in this particular instance, the horror of the crime, in the senseless kidnapping of innocents, mass kidnappings of teachers and social activists in southern Mexico has not received the attention it should, it has been largely ignored. I have stated it is because of racism. If this had occurred in a place like Monterrey or DF, the world press would be all over it.

I want to draw attention to the story as much as possible, and often the only way is to draw attention by a graphic photo. It will assure people see it, if it is on the mainpage, otherwise many people that would bypass the story, the photo will demonstrate what is happening and stay in the mind of readers.

When JFK died, I recall Jackie O not changing her blood stained pink suit, until she arrived back at the White House. People suggested to her she change before she boarded AF1. she refused saying "I want them to see what they have done to jack" those words and the pink suit I have never forgotten, visual expression impacts far greater than text.

I think People coming to a Mexican Drugwar website should have an expectation of seeing graphic photos now and then. and in this case, where I am positive these students are innocents, I want them to see what they have done.

--And to the racisto-nonracisto, it is not racism but caciquism, were the political chieftains rule to enrich themselves and to please los sinores de la ciuda' y de la capital, at the expense of the population, indian or not, the politicians accept whatever results their allies deliver, but on this case it will be hard for the government to do nothing, pena nieto was birthing twins about the ones from tlatlaya, this is about triple tlatlaya...
--In guerrero, it is traditional since forever to murder any indians or citizens who do not get it, the governors have always been a bunch of assassins, with the figueroas at the top of the bunch, didn't they even kill the reporter from proceso in veracruz? All about the caciques...

  44. If people think that this horrible torture and mutilation happens only to cartel members or associates they are not paying attention! Many, many innocents, men, women and even children have been murdered by the cartels or other corrupt entities in Mexico! Their bodies chopped into pieces, burned, dissolved, skinned or whatever sick idea they come up with next? They were skinning the decapitated heads and leaving the eyes in the skull for a while and then posing the heads together! I think it would take a revolution in Mexico to clean out everything? That still doesn't address the main problem driving these atrocities which is the insatiable appetite for illegal drugs in the US! Until there is some base change in that dynamic, the violence and atrocities will continue....
