Leader of Los Rojos Killed

Borderland Beat

Puebla authorities are keeping quiet  about the alleged execution of José Nava Romero, (below left)  leader of a criminal cell known as los Rojos, armed wing of the Beltrán Leyva organization, at a Palenque (cockfights) in the town of San Antonio Cacalotepec (San Andrés Cholula), in the early hours of Sunday.

The  Attorney General of Justice of Puebla has only given a brief police report mentioning the murder of a man, about 45-year-old who was unidentified. They have not provided any report of the facts nor confirmed the identity of the deceased.

Meanwhile, in the state of Guerrero it was confirmed that a funeral service company collected the body of Nava Romero on Sunday evening.

The shooting in which  the leader of los Rojos died, took place around 2:30 hours in a ballroom named Santa Maria, located in the private Juan Pablo Segundo 4, in the district of Santa María de Cacalotepec, which was eventually rented for cockfights.

The body of Nava Romero was laying face-up a few blocks from the Palenque,  on 24 de Febrero street, adjacent  to an Escalade with Querétaro plates, which bore no traces of shooting.

According to police sources, within the party room there were caps of R-15 rifle and evidence of a bloody shootout, in which high power weapons were used.

According to testimonies of neighbors and people who were in the location, a X-Trail SUV arrived with a group of assassins who opened fire against the so-called leader of the criminal group. A chase then took place with several vehicles. There are also versions saying it was a brawl in the heat of the cock fight.

A spokeswoman for the unit said they were waiting for prosecutors to conduct forensic tests to provide information about the case.

Additional Backstory information:

“El Barbas” and “El Grande
When the organization of Beltrán Leyva split  after the murder of its leader, Arturo Beltrán Leyva  (aka "El Barbas" or "Jefe de Jefes") in a hotel of Cuernavaca, Morelos, it was known that the persecution started days before in the state of Puebla.

The shootout that resulted in the killing of "El Barbas" also resulted in  the death of Jesus Nava Romero, aka "El Rojo", brother of Jose Nava.
After the death of the leader of the Beltrán Leyva  on December 16th of 2009, at the hands of Mexico’s Marina,  the violence intensified in the state of Guerrero, especially in the port of Acapulco where his forces concentrated, and  23 minor cells sprouted  which disputed the plaza in bloody conflicts.
After a couple of years of confrontations, the criminal group Los Rojos, led by José  Nava who presumably was killed this dawn- is considered the stronger and most prevalent  group on the coasts of Guerrero.

Another event that relates to  leaders of criminal groups in Puebla, is the capture of Sergio Villarreal Barragan, aka "El Grande", in the luxurious development Puerta de Hierro, in the street Mercaderes number 13, on September 12th of 2010. Villarreal was one of the lieutenants of Arturo Beltrán Leyva.

  2. attn chivis BROWNSVILLE - Motorcycle officers in Brownsville are now armed with M4 carbines.

The Brownsville Police Department chief said the weapons will allow officers to stand up to cross-border violence.

Motorcycle Police Officer Lupe Itzaguirre said officers need the firepower as cartel violence continues to grow.

"Being that we are so close to the border, we do have to compete with these high-powered rifles and guns that we are being confronted with now," the 12-year veteran police said.

Itzaguirre said he may be the first to arrive at a shootout involving cartel members. He said it's important to have the firepower available.

"We carry several other magazines within the motorcycle. It gives us extra ammunition in the event we need it," Itzaguirre said.

"We do practice making the deployment. We do try to do it as quick as possible," he said.

Itzaguirre said it's a challenge to carry the carbine on his motorcycle. The weapon is always exposed. He said officers had to come up with a custom security system.

"It is well-secured, and we always try to be close to it at all times. It does have a combination lock which only the operator of the motorcycle knows ... that's the only way the rifle can be deployed from the rifle rack," Itzaguirre said.

The Brownsville police motorcycle unit is the only one in the Rio Grande Valley armed with M4 carbines.

  3. South Texas Leads in Illegal Border Crossings
WESLACO - The number of illegal immigrants arrested in South Texas has surpassed the detentions in Arizona.

Border Patrol officials said it is the first time in a decade that the Rio Grande Valley sees more arrests than Arizona. They said the trend is not good.

"In the last month, or so, we've seen the numbers spike above the Tuscon Sector," Border Patrol Spokesman Henry Mendiola said.

Border Patrol officials said they knew there would be an increase in the number of apprehensions in the South Texas region.

"We'd already seen the numbers increase last year by 50 percent. Now we're seeing them this year increase by another 50 percent," Mendiola said.

Border Patrol agents have arrested about 100,000 illegal immigrants in the Valley this fiscal year. Sixty percent of those arrests are immigrants from countries other than Mexico.

Border Patrol has to care for the immigrants until they are processed.

"Right now, we're in a budget crunch. CBP took a $600-million hit. We're making adjustments. We brought some folks in from other sectors to address the threat. We're trying to make every way more efficient," Mendiola said.

Mendiola said there are no signs the trend will let up soon.

McALLEN — An Hidalgo man was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for purchasing ammunition and firearms for the Gulf Cartel.

On Monday afternoon, Chief U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa sentenced 32-year-old Ricardo Cantu to 30 months in prison and a three-year term of supervised release.

Cantu had originally pleaded guilty June 23, 2011, to one count of making false statements on documents that were filed with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release.

ATF agents began looking into Cantu after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents caught two weapons and 6,300 rounds of ammunition at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge.

During a meeting with ATF and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Andrei Torres, the man caught with the ammunition and weapons, told them he had got the items from Cantu, who admitted to having bought weapons for the Gulf Cartel.

Torres pleaded guilty Aug. 25, 2010, and was sentenced to 37 months in prison.

Cantu remains on bond awaiting an order to report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. themonitor.com

Nice article Madame Chivis . . . Your Cartel Map (May 2013) released two weeks ago is making a lot of sense with this new development.

According to your map, the state of Puebla is currently disputed by (4) or more Drug Trafficking Organizations: BLO, Los Zetas, CDS and LCT. So, do you think it was «Los Metros» that killed the leader of the Los Rojos? Even more interesting is that the CDS is aiding Los Metros to fight the Los Rojos, am I correct?

Don't be so ignorant, if you are ESL I apologize for the ignorant comment. You will find this post in English no where else. I added backstory info for new readers, and it refers to the shootout and killing of , Arturo Beltrán Leyva, that in that incident El Rojo was also killed, and that he is the brother of the man killed in Sunday's incident.

I do not mind breaking it down for ESL readers, if they are respectful, consider yourself fortunate, but remember this is an English blog.

  25. If I'm not mistaken, the killing of El Botas Blancas led to the fragmentation of the CBL into various off-shoot cartels, specifically in Acapulco : CIDA and their rivals La Barredora. These two cartels unleashed a brutal cartel war in Acapulco. Decapitations were the order of the day in Acapulco in 2010-2011. Introduced the world to characters with the nick-names of el Koreano, el Melon, and a supposed family connection to the governor of Guerrero(Victor Aguirre). The authorities in Mexico hit BLO hard after his take down.

  33. Alfredo going to prison was a deal made between JGL, IZG, and Alfredo himself. The deal was that if he offered to be "apprehended" they would let him have the Culiacan plaza. He agreed, without telling his bro Arturo. Arturo then broke off CDS due to the belief that it was IZG and JGL that gave up Alfredo. While in prison Alfredo knew of what Arturo was doing and he sent a message to Arturo advising him to back off CDS because it was not them go gave him up. Arturo went ahead and became a nuisance for CDS anyway due to power reasons. He became a nuisance to CDS and eventually got taken out. Alfredo knew this would happen but he could not stop his hard headed brother. This is the reason CDS went to Alfredo and not Arturo for this deal. Alfredo is a lot more of an intellectual person than Arturo ever was. So now that Mochomo is getting out, everyone in Culiacan knows that he's with CDS. He will bring most of his BLO crew that is still loyal to him and not to Isidro; Isidro is now full-on Z. On another note, all of the Arizona border belongs to CDS. They're using remote-controlled airplanes that can carry up to 300 pounds to transport merchandise all into AZ. CDS is not allowing any immigrant to walk through the desert their to come into U.S. so their activity there isn't shed light upon. It is said from immigrants that have made it into U.S. through AZ that the only way they were allowed to walk through their was that they had to carry 25 - 50 lb. backpacks full of Mj for CDS. Otherwise they would have to cross through a different state. --818 - 661 AREA--
