Mapping the Incredible Spread of Mexican Drug Cartels in the U.S.

As Barack Obama heads to Mexico, U.S. involvement in Mexico's battle against drug cartels is getting a lot of press. But it's worth noting that Mexico's notorious narcotics trade isn't just Mexico's problem anymore.

And Obama should be well aware of that, considering that this past February Chicago declared Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán its first "Public Enemy No. 1" since Al Capone.

"While Chicago is 1,500 miles from Mexico, the Sinaloa drug cartel is so deeply embedded in the city that local and federal law enforcement are forced to operate as if they are on the border," Jack Riley, the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Chicago office, told CNN.

The infiltration of the Windy City shows the extent to which Mexican drug syndicates have made inroads in the United States -- the Associated Press and others have reported that cartel cells are operating in Atlanta, Ga., Louisville, Ky., Columbus, Ohio, and rural North Carolina. In fact, according to an excellent National Post infographic based on data from a U.S. Justice Department report and other sources, it's much easier to list states that don't have a drug trade tied to Mexican gangs.

There are only twelve that haven't reported the presence of one of four Mexican cartels since 2008: Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The Mexican drug trade is everywhere else.

Detected cartel operations range from traditional drug-running to using a horse ranch as a front for laundering drug money, as one group did in Oklahoma.

The Sinaloa cartel, which has emerged as Mexico's dominant syndicate, has carved out new territory in the United States by controlling 80 percent of its meth trade (Mexican cartels have come to dominate the U.S. market by aggressively bumping up the purity of their meth while dropping the price per gram).

All told, Mexican cartels reside in 1,200 American communities as of 2011, up from 230 in 2008, according to the Associated Press. Below is a map that shows just how many states have been penetrated, according to the National Post's special report on the topic.

  9. The best way to stop the drug traffickers is to wean Americans off illegal drugs!!!!
    Isn't that very obvious?
You can also have a healthier people and a better country!!!!
Once the people are off illicit drugs, the drug cartels will have no business, at least in this respect!!!!

  19. FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN....

Extremely violent Mexican drug cartels working fiercely to enter the drug market in Europe.

    See: http://politiken.dk/udland/ECE1944798/europol-mexicanske-narkokarteller-vil-indtage-europa/

Says Europol, the EU's joint police unit.

Europol has gathered intelligence that shows that criminals from Mexico strive to become key players in the trafficking of drugs in Europe. A shady business that is believed to have its base in the Netherlands and Croatia.

"We do not want the extensive use of violence and brutality we see in Mexico, to gain a foothold in Europe. Together with our law enforcement partners, we will continue our efforts to tackle the criminals who are active in the markets for illicit drugs, "said Europol chief Rob Wainwright, in a recent press release.

Trafficking in women, drugs and weapons
Europol fight across the European countries various forms of organized crime, drug trafficking and organized illegal immigration.

According to Europol, the powerful Mexican drug cartel Zetas is already behind human trafficking in the sex industry, where women moved from Eastern Europe to Mexico. Other Mexican cartels smuggle also weapons to Mexico from South Eastern Europe.

Sinaloa cartel, another of the most powerful cartels in the Latin American country tried according to Europol intelligence recently to establish itself as a player in the lucrative drug trade.

"The attempt by the Sinaloa cartel in gaining a foothold in Europe was recently avoided by a timely, intelligence-led operation. Despite this, we expect that organized Mexican criminal groups will continue their plans to become part of the supply chain of drugs in Europe ', says far from Europol in the press release.

Last year, the American newspaper Los Angeles Times documented that Mexican cartels were involved in trafficking in methamphetamine in Africa. According to the U.S. Department of Justice 'Drug Enforcement Administration' could prove that the Mexican cartels working closely with criminal groups in Ghana, Nigeria, Congo and Mozambique.

  20. Look I live in Tejas on the Border- The Texas-Mexican border is approximately 1254 sq. miles, more then the rest of the United States border with Mexico - There are 23 vehicular international bridges along the length of the Texas-Mexico border - The Zetas leader has resided n Dallas and has family there - Many crimes from Houston to San Antonio - to Dallas back to Austin are because of the Zetas trying to claim Texas. Especially since they teamed up with MS-13. They are here along with Many more cartels that did not make the list - People who are though to feel safe in Canada - lol - Just a mater of time before they spill into that region - and then have drugs entering in from North and Southern parts of the United States - There is more then 1 HUGE Drug bust a day at the DFW airport in Dallas - Fort Worth - However it is sooo common that we rarely here about it. Trust me they are here and VERY ACTIVE

    ReplyDelete
  21. He is correct - which means that I could drive from Dallas to Chicago and back to Dallas and that is about the length of the Texas/Mexico Border - and since Obama does not make it a priority - there is NOOO way the U.S. has enough man power to cover that much ground and the Cartels know this - Peoeple we are Fighting a Losing Battle -

    ReplyDelete
  22. Me too - I also reside on the Texas/Mexico border in Laredo - I am a white boy who speaks Spanish, attends my friends sisters qi sin yeta and stick out like a sore thumb. It is even getting crazy on this side of things. Many people not only moving North but out of Texas, because it has become - Mexico - we used to always cross over the border on the weekends to have a GOOOOD Time - But unless Being Beheaded is a good time to you, we no longer dare cross that bridge - The Bridge of NO Coming Back as we like to call it - Bridge of Diablo -

  23. Bullshit. Wisconsin certainly has a carel presence. In one of my books about cartels, they talk about Wisconsin. And we have had numerous 20,000 plant busts in the national forest that have been done by illegals that don't even know what state they are in. Not only that, but the government released a list that shows the cities that have cartel presence, and Wisconsin had numerous cities. Even some of the some small rural towns do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Back in 2004 it cost $2400 for you to get smuggled into the U.S. to Houston - Which is by the way where you go first. I too live on the Border and have many friends who have been smuggled in for a better life so to speak -. better life so to say. These cartels smuggle drugs and people everyday here - I hear people all the time say " I would hate to be smuggled " Being smuggled is not BAD - If you lived in Mexico and Hondurus you would do whatever it took to get your family across that border. So these cartels know this and charge now about $10,000 a head and they even offer specials, NO LIE - Just like a travel agency, these cartels are not stupid - Half are Business Men and half do the dirty work and the rest are considered low life who no one in the cartels cares about and those guys are like slaves and do what they are told. It is a vicious cycle and will probably never be stopped - As long as there is a demand for Drugs here in the U.S. - along with prostitutes, smuggling people - this will always be around. they are ruthless and barbaric and nothing they will not do to protect their money making schemes which net BILLIONS and BILLIONS and BILLIONS and that is Yearly

    ReplyDelete
  25. In Texas the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas are labeled as Different for Sure. and that is 100% fact. Since the merge of the Zetas and MS-13, whom both have a HUGE presence in Texas, which us people who live on the border call it Texaco. It is very well known that the Zetas have split from the CDG and there is No Love Lost, trust me.

  26. Columbia cartels started a fight with zetas? They probably paid the columbians like they pay their siscarios next to nothing

  27. Their products go everywhere and their money comes back from everywhere. So in that sense, the cartels, the whole slew of them, are everywhere. Now, when it comes to people, where do we draw the line? Do they send inspectors like any regular business to make sure things are right? Probably not, but no doubt they send thugs on occasion for a little persuasion. Do they send marketing people to expand their customer base? Probably not, but I am sure plenty of deals are made. The thing is, once the product crosses the border it is mostly Americans handling this side of the business. They might be relatives, or nothing more than business partners. The problem is that we try to pigeon-hole people into being "cartel" in the same way a Convenience store clerk would be considered a Coca-cola dealer. It doesn't make sense because it isn't so simple. People are just out to make money, and it will continue as long as it is a completely free unregulated market.

  32. I live here on the Texaco border and I am not exaggerating - I assure you that the census is dropping everyday. Watch some of these videos of their brutality and barbaric behavior. They put one guy in a 100 gallon drum and filled it with concrete and left him there for a good while - The only thing he could move was his head before THE CHINSAW GOT IT. Women and children being taken advantage of, and that is on this side of the border - also remember many of the people who live here on the border are illegally here from Mexico escaping from the carnage and the hits that have been placed on them and their families. So the videos you are seeing and all the terrible things that we witness have spilled over into the U.S> - If I thought for a Second that my family was in danger of being tortured and decapitated as depicted in some of these videos, I would not feel safe with only a river separating me from these terrible people. Especially since we do not have enough border patrol to cover the ground. So these cartels come across and commit these crimes and then go right back to Mexico and are never caught. The U.S> has not done enough to make us, who live on the border feel safe. Hell, we might as well be in the middle of it all. Trust me when I tell you this, IT IS HERE. I do not say this laughing or jokingly - It is sad that we who live on the border have to watch where we go as well and be aware of our surrounding in our own country and state.

  34. Since the cartels started working the lower distribution levels, they have driven most of the african-american dealers down to the lowest retail level or completely out of the business in some areas. This is one reason black on black crime has sky-rocketed in place like Chicago - they are fighting over a smaller piece of the pie. Who knows, the cartels may indirectly be responsible for the demise of the thug-in-the-club black hipster scene. What will the gangsta-rappers rap about now - I used to be tough-guy but the Mexicans run a better business?

  35. I just watched something that scared the shit out of me - everyone go to ( you-tube ) and type in - gangland los zetas - this is about Laredo Texas and everything the guy above me saying is VERY TRUE - Hits in broad daylight on Texas Police - one after another after another - Look gang on gang warfare and shootings is nothing new to the U.S> but these people do it in a whole different way- cops who patrol in the U.S. are not ready for this type of carnage, They do not patrol in that military mind set - One guy has a hit on his head from Laredo, TX because his daughter and a friend went over the bridge to Nuevo Laredo to a concert in 2004 - They never came back - Well he went on a TV show with Bill Walsh about finding missing people and bringing these Zetas to justice - They are after his family now for even looking for his daughter and want him to just give up looking for her and be quite.- Come to find out - His daughter and friend were pulled over by the Mexican Police and taken into custody and given to the ZETAS as a piece offering. When people see a drug dealer kill another drug dealer in other parts of the country, they think that its all good because trash taking out trash, right? But what the U.S. does not realize is that the people are not just taking out the trash, they are putting hits on whomever and wherever ( innocent women and children ) - NO BOUNDRIES. So what was a drug dealer dead this week is your police chief next week. Many of the Laredo Policemen have hits on their heads and their families. These cartels want the I35 corridor and they will do whatever to keep it - WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY AND THEN GET BACK TO ME.

  36. Lol, @ Americas Nightmare - He is very accurate in what he says. People who try to comehere and say things about the Zetas are no longer heard from again, nor found. So I would heed the warning ahead of time. From Laredo to Dallas - Keep their name out of your mouths on the streets - They have taken out numerous, Numerous Mexican Mafia members in these parts for selling drugs, because this is their turf. If you want to sell drugs on their turf - YOU BEST PAY THE TAX they have imposed - And if you don't pay the TAX - well then you will have to pay the Piper, Along with your Familia.

Former DEA and CIA Operatives: Los Zetas May Attempt to Overthrow Mexican Government in 2013 (Using U.S. Government Weapons)

Los Zetas use the Alliance Airport in Ft. Worth, Texas -the same airport where the DEA’s Air Operations Center is located- to fly weapons to Columbus, NM., El Paso, and Laredo, TX. to be later smuggled into Mexico. CIA analysts say the weapons, which are purchased from the U.S. Government according to captured Zeta leader Jesus Enrique Rejon Aguilar, aka. El Mamito, are being stockpiled throughout Mexico for a potential upcoming overthrow of the Mexican government in 2013.

This article is starting to hit around the Web - Unreal, The power these people have and the numbers they have already in Texas is unwittingly undeniable and scary. I will post the link to this article Below. This is coming from one of the Leaders of the Zetas who is in custody NOW - He insist OUR GOVERNMENT BEING INVOLVED - Which most of us never doubted one second.

  40. Here is the rest of that article on the Zetas and Texas and U.S> authorities our of Fort Worth Texas - which is called Murder Worth Now

MEXICO CITY, July 15 .- Los Zetas use the border crossings of El Paso-Ciudad Juarez and Palomas-Columbus (both locations along the Texas-Chihuahua border) to supply and stockpile military type weapons, which would give them ability to disrupt the 2012 elections, according to the El Paso Times.

“Many of the weapons have been stored in safe houses. I think Los Zetas are storing them for the upcoming elections of 2012,” said Robert Plumlee, a former CIA pilot who has testified before Congress on drugs and weapons trafficking research.

The report is corroborated with an interview with Phil Jordan, former director of the DEA in El Paso, who stated that the stockpiles, which include anti-aircraft missiles, are transported from a Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. The consultant added that the criminals set up (phony) companies to buy weapons directly through a State Department program.

    U.S. analysts warn of narco-attack in 2012

The Border Patrol personnel and U.S. intelligence services have recently learned that Los Zetas have been purchasing properties on both sides of the border to store thousands of high-power weapons that were discovered to be part of five or six shipments that left the same airport where the DEA has its air operations center.

Phil Jordan, former central intelligence operative and director of the DEA office in El Paso, Texas, and a former CIA pilot, Robert Plumlee, said Los Zetas transported the high-power weapons to El Paso-Ciudad Juarez and the Columbus-Palomas border areas to reinforce their troops for battling other cartels and possibly disrupt the 2012 elections in Mexico, El Paso Times reported yesterday.

“I believe Los Zetas are storing weapons for the election season (2012). They probably want to be included as part of the (new) government, “said Plumlee.

“The agency responsible for investigating arms trafficking has just confirmed that Los Zetas have been smuggling weapons through this region, and Laredo, which was new to us,” said Diana Washington Valdez from El Paso Times.

She mentioned grenades, grenade launchers, antiaircraft missiles, body armor, radios, GPS devices, and night vision binoculars, among other items.

Washington Valdez reported that Phil Jordan and Robert Plumlee, who has been called to testify in many U.S. congressional investigations, as well as other sources, reported that some of the weapons were purchased in Dallas, Texas, and being sent by plane from a nearby airport in Forth Worth to the Carrillo Fuentes (Juarez) cartel.

“There is an airport over there is called Lions (Alliance –ed.), but the irony,” said Phil Jordan, “is that there is also a DEA aviation headquarters at the same airport. Who knows how long they have been doing this under the noses of the DEA, because the shipments and the aircraft used by Los Zetas left the same airport,” he added.

    ReplyDelete
  41. And here is the ending of the article - hopefully these all get published all in a row for this to make sense.

Washington Valdez said Jordan, Plumlee and other sources were consulted for several months when the rumor of the weapons stockpile began, and compared these events to the time when the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) not only went to war against the cartels themselves, but also the very government of that country.

“One of the weapons shipments was found in a warehouse in Juarez, which was later relocated to a ranch on the other side of town, and other weapons were moved to another ranch further deep into Chihuahua,” she said.

    Weapons purchased in the U.S.

She also stressed that Jordan and Plumlee, who participated in high-profile operations during the Cuban Revolution and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as well as other sources, reported that the stockpiles of weapons are not only held at real estate properties that Los Zetas have purchased on both sides of the border, but in other locations throughout Mexico because it was found that a private company is taking advantage of the Direct Commercial Sales program under the U.S. State Department, which allows businesses to purchase high-power weapons which the U.S. exports worldwide.

“According to these reports, some Mexican businessmen who took advantage and authorized the use of that mechanism, arranged for these weapons to be delivered to the drug cartels,” she said.

The global arms report, Small Arms Survey of 2011, from the Institute for International and Development Studies in Switzerland, said that Mexico was the number one importer in the world of RPG’s, and “under-barrel” grenade launchers, with 1,429 units being imported, followed in second place by Latvia with 250.

World imports of this type of grenade launchers rose to 1,912 units.

Diana Washington announced that she’s also expecting new revelations from a U.S. federal investigation that took place in the Dallas area, which she will publish in a book.

“I’m waiting to confirm the details related to this case of weapons trafficking because what is striking is that the weapons were stockpiled and not used in the current war between the drug gangs,” she said.

Recent U.S. actions against Los Zetas

Both U.S. and Mexican authorities are on high alert and coordinating actions against Los Zetas in order to disable or damage their organizational structure.

On January 24, 2011, the U.S. embassy in Mexico reported that former Mexican military member Rogelio Lopez, who was trained in that country (Ft. Benning), was recruited by Los Zetas to assassinate former Deputy Attorney General Jose Luis Vasconcelos.

On July 3, 2011, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), issued a warning to its citizens with the recommendation not to travel to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, particularly during that weekend, and especially on July 4, due to a potential threat from Los Zetas.

On 4 July, the Federal Police arrested Jesus Enrique Rejon Aguilar, third in the command in the criminal organization known as Los Zetas and allegedly involved in the killing of U.S. agent Jaime Zapata, last February.

On July 6, 2011, Jesus Enrique Rejon Aguilar, aka. El Mamito, said the weapons used by that criminal group (Los Zetas) to be used against their opponents are bought in that country (the U.S.) and are even sold to them by the U.S. authorities.

On July 11, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the United States (BATFE) announced that firearms dealers will now have to disclose the names of customers who purchase semi-automatic weapons.

  44. About the CIA gun running and the Zetas: Interesting but the dates referenced are really old now, "2012 election season" has passed and no insurrection or coup.
So let's say this story has legs - why would the US government or even an "Oliver Stone" style rogue element within the CIA, a CIA led by Leon Panetta, want to overthrow the Mexican government? Granted, Obama & Holder have shown they are capable of stunning stupidity with Fast & Furious, but overthrowing the Mexican government, really? With the Zetas, really? Motive?

  45. zNo clue on the motive - Just found it interesting - I live in Laredo and posted that - I am not sure of a motive - I took it as the Government selling guns to Los Zetas - not necessarily to overthrow Mexico , but to make MONEY ( Dinero ) Everything has to do with money - Then in return the Los Zetas planned on using these weapons to overthrow Mexico - I don't think that the U.S> knew that the Los Zetas were planning this nor did they care - But our government does some stupid things from supplying guns to Syrian armies to Islamic terrorist. I just though it an interesting read none the less. This s just my 2 cents - Just an opinion

  46. You can bet that Holder and Obama giving weapons to the drug cartels in Fast & Furious, contributed to this problem. The Cartels are here now.

  47. When you are dealing with a threat of this magnitude you do not arrest them, you treat them as the enemy and as if it were a war which it actually is, you gather intel and do search and destroy missions ending it for good and that includes any persons involved, prisons are not an option, a 30-06 or drone strikes are the only answers.
