A Reynosa woman is spending Valentine's Day behind bars after she allegedly accepted $100 dollars to smuggle $1.6 million dollars worth of cocaine into the United States.

U.S.Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 29-year-old Maria Magdalena Martinez-Tijerina on a federal drug charges on Tuesday.

Martinez-Tijerina drove up from Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge in a gray 2006 Honda Civic with Tamaulipas license plates.

Court records show that customs officers had her license plates under a "lookout" list.

Customs officers sent her car to secondary inspection where they found 10 packages with 51.28 pounds of cocaine worth $1.6 milion dollars hidden inside the rocker panels.

Martinez-Tijerina told investigators that her friend's boyfriend "Javier" got her involved in drug smuggling and put the car in her name.

The Reynosa woman said she had smuggled drugs at least five times before and he would pay her $100 dollars per trip.

According to the records, Javier would ride with her in Reynosa but get out of the car before she crossed into the United States.

Martinez-Tijerina said he would walk across the bridge on the pedestrian lanes while she drove across.

Once she crossed in the car, they would meet up again in Hidalgo and he would take the car while she would go shopping.

  1. While the woman in question may be dumb, it's more an example of poverty, desperation, inequality, and manipulation, and exploitation. She may have not had any idea how much she was transporting, and two, I don't think it reflects being dumb, just poor. It's pretty sad actually. The boyfriend is probably worried, he just lost at least half a mil in product.

    1. Basically true, but...

If she knew better her chances of her getting caught and what would happen once busted and how badly she would regret the choice, do you think she would still would have made that choice? I don't believe so.

A better word for her might be extremely desperate and/or naive

  5. J I don't agree with you, I'm from a very poor family and we don't get involved on drug trafficking for a quick buck. Also many people are involved on drug trafficking on the U.S. including many corrupted cops and others, "will you say that this people did it for the same reasons?" People get involved in drug trafficking to make easy money, plain and simple.

  8. Something doesn't add up, I don't think that woman is telling the truth about how much she was being paid.
I agree with February 14, 2012 8:37 PM people get involved on drug trafficking for easy money more than for desperation, for you to come across the border you had to have legal documents, those documents are not that easy to get. I'm sure she was not that desperate.

  9. You may not, but others do. Difference of principals, morals, accessibility, all sorts of factors, and the fact is....This wasn't easy money, it wasn't even a lot of money.

  13. @J That is exactly what I'm talking about, not that many people can get a Visa (poor desperate people don't have Visas to come to the U.S) Something doesn't add up, I don't think that woman is telling the truth.

  18. Why does anyone get involved with drugs be it selling/smuggling/taking. It's fkin obvious it's black & white that drugs leads to one path be it a country or a person that path is destruction. Yet everyone seems to stupid to realise it the ppl who are killing for these lucrative drug routes to the USA & the users in the USA who are dependent on drugs for whatever reason. I agree with both comments made that just because ppl are poor doesn't necessarily make them desperate or law breakers but it could be a reason for some ppl, & ppl nowadays are too lazy & don't have the same values & respect it's all greed and they / we want everything easy & that's in any country

  19. 2/15 12:43PM,
Yea, that's what the article says...but who truly knows her relationship to this "Javier?" She could have made such a statement, in an effort to distance herself from him...to make it appear that she doesn't really know him. Just like I don't believe she was only paid $100 bucks either...it seems to me, she's trying to appear ignorant about the whole thing like she didn't know any better.

  20. LMFAO well at least he was smart about it when they smuggled the drugs. He gets out of the car and away from the evidence while she takes all the risk. And must be a tough economy to smuggle 1 million worth of cocaine for only a hundred bucks.

  21. Yeah I wouldn't say stupid so much as poor, very sad...

  22. I agree with the poster doubtful about the woman's story.
First, after numerous trips, she would know much more than the lame story of only getting $ 100 / crossing.

Second, her story is "cooked-up" ploy to mitigate her smuggling crime. Con-artists and whores pull such deceptive stunts all the time in other contexts.

I have other reservations, but these are the main ones.
