Lebanese Drug Lord Charged in US: Links to Zetas and Hezbollah

ABC News
A Lebanese drug kingpin who allegedly has connections to the Zeta drug cartel and Hezbollah has been charged with drug dealing and money laundering, the Justice Department and DEA announced today.

Ayman Joumaa, a.k.a “Junior,” and his associates allegedly shipped an estimated 85,000 kilograms of cocaine into the United States and laundered more than $850 million in drug money coming out of Mexico from the Zeta cartel through front companies and The Lebanese Canadian Bank (LCB).

In a federal indictment that was unsealed Monday, Joumaa was charged with cocaine distribution and money laundering.

In January, the Treasury Department designated Joumaa a major narcotics trafficker, alleging that he used cash exchange houses in Lebanon that had accounts with the Lebanese Canadian Bank. A month later the LCB was designated by Treasury as a “Primary Money Laundering Concern”

According to U.S. officials, Hezbollah has obtained financing from Joumaa and his associates. U.S. officials say some officers with the Lebanese Canadian Bank and subsidiaries have connections with Hezbollah.

The case shows the reach of Hezbollah’s financial support network. U.S. officials have long known about the group operating in South America’s tri-border area in Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina where the group runs drugs and large scale counterfeiting networks, according to U.S. officials. In recent years there has been more recent concern about the group establishing a footprint in Central America.

“The defendant’s coordination of money laundering activities occurred in the United States, Lebanon, Benin, Panama, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and elsewhere,” the indictment alleged.

“According to information from sources, his alleged drug and money laundering activities facilitated numerous global drug trafficking organizations, including the criminal activities of the Los Zetas Mexican drug cartel,” DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart said in a statement.

The indictment alleges that Joumaa and his co-conspirators coordinated cocaine shipments from Colombia and Latin America to sell to the Zeta cartel and launder the drug proceeds, charging fees between 8 percent and 14 percent for laundering the funds.

“During the course of the conspiracy, the defendant typically picked up between $2 [million] and $4 million at a time in Mexico City,” the indictment said of bulk shipments of U.S. currency that Joumaa and his associates would receive from the drug sales.

“Money fuels the drug trade, and Mr. Joumaa is alleged to be at the center of it all,” U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said. “Working with those producing the vast majority of the world’s cocaine to get their drugs safely into the hands of Mexican cartels, and then moving hundreds of millions in proceeds all around the world so the money can’t be traced back to them in Colombia.”

Every cartel has colombian connects, I thought beltranes would help them solidify there coke contacts to s.america but looks like there still struggeling to find trust in anyone from colombia

  7. Mexican cartels don't technically get their cocaine straight from the source. Since its much too risky. Instead -source- will contract a third party (Guatemala per say) who ever their contact in this country is will receive large shipment. This party's job is to get it too Mexican contacts.
and on a side note when shipments this big are taking place money piles of cash are usually next to it.

This is why I still to this day have to see a real bust. All the bust we see are due to Intel information. Not good investigating.

The crime scene has already been licked then someone got the Intel on crime scene and finished the job. Because at the end of the day our agencies are the biggest baddest gang, so why not join the best team.

This society and lifestyle is worse than Hollywood in the sense that its much more two-faced, much more cut throat, and Darwin's law to the max of either you evolve to your surroundings or you die with the weak.

  9. What a crock of shit.
Here's a list of some other crimes that the Justice Dept. suspects Mr. Joumaa had a hand in:
1- The Chicago Fire of 1871
2- The JFK, MLK jr., RFK, and Malcolm X Assassinations
3- The financial crisis of 2008
4- The spread of the SARS, Ebola, H1N1, and West Nile viruses
5- Flying a plane into World Trade Center 1 and later flying another plane into World Trade Center 2

    Give me a Goddamn break!

    1. A lot of you guys are not as knowledgable as you imagine. Or you are so Mexican cartel obsessed that the facts cloud your brains. If it wasn't for the Lebanese descended ex DFS head and Asaf Y Bala and Cuban exile Alberto Sicilia Falcon the bandits and smugglers from Sinaloa and elsewhere wouldn't of asquired the governmental and I tell protection levels they did in the late 1970s.

Another thing I'm surprised you Mexicans and other Americans don't know. Many of you say Zetas would deal directly with Colombian contacts..... He is a Colombian contact. He owned business in Colombia and lived there and Venezuala. There are hundreds of thousands of Lebanese born in Colombia , Venezusla., Brazil, Mexico even.and millions of descenders . They are far more international and better at languages than any other nationality. He also was big in West and Central Africa were there are maybe 150,000 Lebanese.

Damm zetas sell to lebanese kingpins??? and in return the lebanese guys launder 850,000,000 for the Zetas.Im pretty sure the Zetas are laundering more money from other people too.Its been proven over and over again the Zetas are growing too big and powerful, while Chapo keeps on fucking himself over, yes,he did the stupidest thing ever, apparently Ismael el Mayo Zambada has decided to no longer work with El Chapo, most likely over disagreements, and went independent, and is now hunting El Chapo. Wait for the news to break out or the narcomantas to go up like crazy,el mayo zambada is challenging el Chapo for complete control over plazas once shared. It is not a secret in mexico.mayos ppl are fighting chapos ppl.maybe chapos reputation of pointing the finger or giving up his own ppl is catching up to him, maybe El Mayo thinks Chapo turned in his son,who knows.Everyone knows Chapo has alot of power but without the support of El Mayo,he aint shit.

  14. zetas don't seem to have direct link to Colombian suppliers, they always have to buy from a third party. unlike Sinaloa who runs their own coke labs in Peru or have direct suppliers. zetas have to scrape coke from dollar bills for their supply.

  16. Im in total shock right now,so the USA captures a drug lord, are my eyes seeing right!!!!?????After years of letting drug lords operate freely in the United States, they are finally learning from Mexico.I just dont think its fair how the beautiful country of Mexico captures or kills 22 out of the 37 most powerful drug lords and the United States five years and over 50,000 human beings dead after the war on drugs started in Mexico barely capture 1.The United States of America is an embarrasement.Yet they brag on how they are helping Mexico with so many things, why not stop the peace these drug lords have in the United States and disrupt their operations, that way they wont be able to send Money back to Mexico, ooh thats right because its the United States,I forgot that they dont capture drug lords only teenagers that usually have a massive amount of drugs often because they have a gram of Marijuana.Anyone with logic would see right through the United States HYPOCRITE rulers, leaders saying they are extremely active in helping Mexico, yet they have only caught 1 drug lord. The United States should be ashamed to even mention the war on drugs in Mexico, because everyone knows its because of the HUGE amount of mentally weak people that only the United States produces.

Nowhere in the world is there more Mentally Weak people than in the United States,I have no idea why people would brag being from the United States, where HYPOCRICY is a way of life.

Theres is no other country in the world thats better than Mexico.100%MEXICANO.

  17. So which info is correct? I found this in Processo.com.mx

MEXICO, D.F. (Approved) .- U.S. authorities charged a Lebanese drug lord allegedly helping rack huge amounts of cocaine into the country and launder hundreds of millions of dollars for Mexican drug cartels.

The Lebanese Ayman Joumaa, 47, was accused of conspiring with others to help send about 85 000 kilograms of cocaine from Colombia, from 2005 to 2007.

He was also indicted for helping to launder more than $ 250 million in drug money for the cartel Los Zetas.
The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Virginia in late November and was opened by a judge on Monday 12.
However, Joumaa is not in custody, prosecutors said.

In January, Joumaa along with nine other individuals and 19 entities related to their organization, were listed as Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers by the U.S. Treasury Department.

At that time, U.S. authorities said they had laundered Joumaa's drug money through Lebanese Canadian Bank, which was also designated as a "the primary concern of money laundering."

But the bank denied any licit involvement .

The indictment states that Joumma administered laundering profits from drug trafficking from Mexico, Europe, West Africa and Colombia and charged a fee ranging from 8 to 14%.

Even, sometimes gains were delivered to Mexico City in big dollar amounts, the paper said.
Joumaa face a life sentence if convicted.

U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said that "money drives the drug trade, and Mr. Joumaa supposedly is in the center of everything, working with those who produce the vast majority of the world's cocaine for the drug to reach safely in the hands of Mexican cartels, and then moving hundreds of millions in profits for all the world. CHICAGO (approved) .- The Federal Court Northern District of Chicago, Illinois, ordered the government of Barack Obama to allow the legal defense of Jesus Vicente Zambada Niebla, El Vicentillo, access to all documents "classified" and decided postpone the start date of the trial of alleged Mexican drug trafficker.

"The defense of Mr. Zambada must have access to all official documents delivered to the Department of Justice on this Court, although that does not mean that classified documents be made public," said Judge Ruben Castillo, at the hearing held on Tuesday .

At the meeting, Alvin Michaelson, a lawyer in El Vicentillo, verbally requested the judge to "nullify" the trial for drug trafficking, taking into account that the Justice Department has not presented any substantial evidence to support the allegations against his client .

"I see nothing for the moment that takes us to cancel the trial, on the contrary, I think this will take much time, and is now considered that the date of February 13, for the start of the trial, will have to be postponed" , Judge Castillo said to the lawyers El Vicentillo.

The defense of the son of Ismael El Mayo Zambada, ranking number two in the power of the Sinaloa cartel, told the judge that in the coming days to formally request (in writing) for a mistrial, even when the Court of Chicago already announced that it rejects the request.

At the meeting on Tuesday, the defense again argued that El Vicentillo is innocent of the charges against him in America, and that his client "did receive promises of immunity" by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA, for its acronym in English), in exchange for information concerning the operations of the Sinaloa cartel contrary to.

"My client is not part of the structure of the cartel and neither was in charge of the logistics of this operation," said Michaelson during the session before Judge Castillo.

I will have an open mind enough to the US setting a stage based on "national security issues" if they continue to prove or claim terror groups are involved with Mex cartels, but that's as far as I'm going. The trailer park mama's boy ranting about how bad the US is and how we don't go after criminals etc etc...is obviously retarded or just so bored from being unemployed and living at home with his fat mamma.....John Gotti, the majority of the Italian Mafia....was that just a fantasy? Is the US not funding Mexico's silly drug war...Are we not providing intel and helicopters and training?......I'm plenty annoyed with many things the USA does, but brag about being American...Luckily I live here, my business is not extorted unless you count heavy taxation to fund trash like some of you who prefer to waste time online all day instead of working and as bad as things are, I have all necessities and luxuries while others are risking their lives either begging to come here are trying to come here illegally.........If the USA sucks that bad...then all these morons should move and the sooner the better.

RESPONSE- THEIR IS ALWAYS SOMEONE WHO "KNOWS" WHETHER THEY WANT TO SAY SOMETHING OR NOT ITS UP TO THEM. A CARTEL MIGHT ONLY HAVE ONE CONNECTION AND THAT ONE CONNECTION BRINGS IN TONS. BUT THAT ONE CONNECTION DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN ITS A "SOURCE" CONNECTION.

FOR EXAMPLE: A COLOMBIAN SOURCE SELLS TO AN INDIVIDUAL IN GUATEMALA. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY NO LONGER TRUST MEXICANS, ITS GETTING MUCH TOO HOT TO DEAL WITH THEM DIRECTLY.

SO THEY WILL OFFER AN INDIVIDUAL A 5 MILLION DOLLAR SHIPMENT. I WILL GUARANTEE THIS IS WHERE CUTTING PROCESS BEGINS. THEY TAKE MERCHANDISE AND HAVE 2 TO 4 GUYS CUTTING TONS. ONCE ITS READY FOR MEXICANS THEY WILL TURNOVER MERCHANDISE IN EXCHANGE FOR CASH. IF CASH HASNT BEEN ALREADY HANDLED PRIOR.

MONEY THEN USUALLY SITS IN THE HOME OF MAIN DRUG LORD. WHERE HE SPLITS HIS MONEY FROM COLOMBIANS. MONEY FOR COLOMBIANS WILL BE PICKED UP WITH NEXT SHIPMENT. AND HIS OWN MONEY IS EITHER BURIED OR STARTS PROCESS OF BEING LAUNDERED. ALL THESE MEN WHO ARE IN HIGH RANKING DRUG TRAFFICKING, OWN (INDIRECTLY OF COURSE) "CASA DE CAMBIOS" WHERE 5O% OF MONEY GOES THE REST IS SPENT ON KEEPING THE OPERATION GOING AND ACQUIRING COUNTLESS MATERIAL THINGS. USUALLY INCLUDES TRACTORS, MACHINERY, LIVESTOCK, ANYTHING THAT GIVES THEM THE IMAGE OF A HARD WORKING DOWN TO EARTH MAN.

Are y'all in so much fear about losing credibility with the "war on drugs" that you have to tie the middle east terrorists into the mix to attempt to get support and funding. My God, if we go after drug cartels as we did terrorists, we might catch one in 10 years. We can't afford you and your crew of manipulators anymore. The DEA is worthless. This lebanese coke broker was their only hope of restructuring their criminal network. ReplyDelete
  51. @dec 16 2011 11:39am, cant put too much of a cut on it, because its going to wholesalers who take it from border area to inner US, chicago, ny, etc. Those are the ones who can put a cut on it, turn the one kilo that costs 19,000 at the border into 2 that will sell for 25-30,000 each in chicago, or ny. There is too much competition from the other cartels to be able to cut it much, they make their $ by being able to get it accross the border. Sure 8 a key sounds good, but if you cant get it over to the US then what good is it?
And even still, pot beat its again as an investment. A kilo of pot at the border, 400, turns in 700 for each pound in chicago or ny.
