Mexican Norteno Singer Shot Dead by Gunmen in Sinaloa

Mexican narcorridos singer Diego Rivas killed.

Police in Mexico say three people have been killed in a drive-by shooting in western Sinaloa state.

One of those killed is Diego Rivas, a singer of narcocorridos - songs glorifying drug traffickers.

Officials said gunmen opened fire on the singer and his friends in the city of Culiacan in the early hours of Sunday.

Police say musicians who celebrate the lives of drug barons often become targets for rival drug gangs.

One of Mr Rivas' songs is an ode to Joaquin Shorty Guzman, Mexico's most wanted drug lord.

Born in Culiacan, in Sinaloa state, Mr Rivas started singing in school contests.

He later joined the band Arriba Mi Sinaloa, but split from them in 2006. He has since been appearing with his band Los Guaruras.

Among his best known songs are Brindo con Sangre (I Toast With Blood) and El comander (The Commander).

Prosecutors say Rivas was singing and drinking with friends early Sunday outside a house when gunmen arrived and started shooting with AK-47 or "cuernos de chivo." Rivas and two others died and three people were wounded.

Singers of the Grupero genre of music have in the past been targeted by drug gangs.

Last year, Sergio Vega, better known as El Shaka, was shot dead only hours after he had gone on radio to deny reports he had been murdered.

And in 2007, the singer of K-Paz de la Sierra was kidnapped, tortured and murdered after performing at a concert in the western state of Michoacan.

RIVAS' ODE TO SHORTY GUZMAN
“He is short of stature, but his brain is big... He is the hardest among the hard, and those who don't like him are from a rival gang... The orders are clear, says Shorty, you know what to do, and if there are any problems, you answer with goat horns (AK-47 rifles)...Shorty doesn't need to raise his voice, his words carry great power.”

Translated extract from Diego Rivas' Ode to Shorty Guzman.

This has nothing to do with Zetas, singers who are killed either didn't want to sing for someone or compose a song. It's also possible they were targeting someone else and he just happened to be there.

  5. What is the deal with these singers? They keep singing about Chapo like he is all Mexico has to offer. I like coridos too but damn this is pathetic its the same story over and over again. Move on sing about something else already. Wasted talent and I seriously doubt this guy left his family set for life. Why put his life or his family in danger for someone like that to begin with? Too late now... I wonder if Chapo is gonna relatiate or send his family his condolances along with a blank check.

  6. Maybe it was something else, but my guess is Beltran Leyva's, they seem to be infesting Culican lately. Too bad this guy gave his life to that. He was probably affiliated, but I doubt he deserved to die.

  7. Parece que ya no va a parar esto. Los de Guasave vienen hacia culiacan para querer demostrar que todavia no los han tern=minado. Se les meten al terreno y parece que ni los de los antrax andan seguros en su propio terreno.

  11. I guess nothing has been learned since the brutal murder of Valentin Elizalde...... don't glorify drug traffickers, when you get killed EL Chapo won't be sending you flowers or chip in for your casket.

  12. @J, Yeah it could be because I remember that La Barbie mentioned in his intetterogation video,"that Sergio Vega El Shaka was killed in Los Mochis by Most likely El Chapo Guzmans ppl because Sergio Vega was on his way to Guasave to play music for El Chapo Isidro and Beltran Leyva loyalist. Its on Youtube.

  15. You think Chapo has time to think about petty shit like killing narco corrido singers. This guy runs a billion dollar empire. He has bigger fish to fry and make paper and keep his people employed. Other low level sicarios maybe but capos like that come on man.

  19. How about songs about Mexico's social breakdown? I suggest they start with Leonard Cohen's Road To Hell. Mexico's ruling oligarchy has yet to figure out that the days of Villa and Zapata are over. Mexico needs laxer gun laws, so the honest people can protect themselves and each other. The cartels already have more firepower and ordnance than the army.

  20. Soul? God? Satan?

Stop corrupting your life and others, with bronze aged fairy tales, dude. Start living in the NOW and hopefully you come up with the solution to stop the bloodshed.

The bullets, blood and tears are real and it will not stop by threaten with the wrath of an imaginary friend, who seem to be playing hide and seek in these desperate times for the Mexican people.

Lets face it, as long as there is billions to be made in trafficking drugs, the smartest and ruthless gangster will get the largest peace of the pie. The solution is simple, legalize it all.

Informing people of the hazards associated to drugs is all the government can and must do. Do we not know the hazards of alcohol and tobacco? People have a "free will" and will use drugs no matter what, just tax the hell out of it so these crackheads contribute to the failing economy like every other 98%-er!

  28. I was living in Mexico when Valentin was killed and the rumor was that Valentin was not killed by a rival cartel, but had got into a dispute with a cartel henchman over a woman, whom the singer was involved with, and I guess Valentin didn't back off the mujer, even after being threatened, so the cartel animales decided he needed a permanent lesson unfortunately. Too bad cause he was a talented singer. It's cowardly to kill unarmed people over nothing........
