Narco-Corrido Singer Gerardo Ortiz Attacked in Colima

Narcocorridos singer Gerardo Ortiz suffered an early morning attack on Sunday which killed his driver, his representative, and a wounded an indentified woman riding in the vehicle.

After concluding his presentation at a fair in Villa de Alvarez, Gerardo Ortiz was headed to his hotel when he was stopped by several subjects who opened fire on the Suburban in which he, his father, representative, and a young woman were traveling.

According to initial investigations, the singer was attacked shortly after 4 a.m. near a shopping plaza, located north of the city of Colima, when attackers drove up alongside his vehicle and opened fire, killing 59 year old Abel Valle Rosales, who was driving the vehicle, and the singer's 31 year old representative, Ramiro Caro.

Following the death of the driver, the singer's vehicle slammed into a tree where, according to the State Attorney General's office, a group of unidentified men arrived and removed Ortiz and his father before fleeing the scene.

At this time the whereabouts of the singer and his father are unknown..

He's gotten the full narco experience without having to actually be one! I love it. If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it might get kidnapped and beheaded. If you know what I'm saying

  14. Another news report seemed to indicate that instead of the singer and father being kidnapped, they were picked up and taken to safety, and the woman in the attack was taken to the hospital. I just posted on El Coyote and his band being attacked in the early morning hours. Although el Coyote's latest song is about the drug war, I wouldn't so much call it a narco-corrido and off of the top of my head, I don't remember El Coyote singing narco-corridos.

  18. In the past two years, 15 mexican musicians have been murdered. In the past two years, assassins have shot, burnt or suffocated at least 15 Mexican musicians. The latest victim was sprayed with 20 bullets as he sang alongside his band, Brisas del Mar, at a dance near the Acapulco resort in March. In December, three entertainers were killed in a week: one singer was kidnapped, throttled and dumped on a road, a trumpeter was found with a bag on his head and a diva was shot dead in her hospital bed.

Some attacks have targeted entire bands. Four members of Los Padrinos de la Sierra were shot in June, four months after masked gunmen ambushed them in the town of Puruaran, killing four and wounding one. The carnage has claimed both up-and-coming musicians and best-selling artists. Sergio Gomez of K-Paz de la Sierra won a Grammy nomination after releasing Pero Te Vas a Repentir, or 'You Will Have Regrets,' a love song so catchy that half of Mexico was humming it. He was abducted after a concert and tortured for two days, his genitals being burnt with a blowtorch, before he was strangled with a plastic cord.

One of the most popular drug ballad composers, Elizalde had been nominated for a Grammy shortly before his murder, having gained a hardcore following for songs such as 118 Bullets. 'There was a big shoot-out,/ With 14 bullet-filled bodies, / And the American government, /Took away the marijuana,' he sang in his other hit, Contraband on the Border.

'I just thank God every day that I'm alive,' he tells me, inspecting the bullet wound on his left arm. 'And I'm a really lucky person to be making a good living as a musician. Many people in my country don't have enough money to eat.'

In April, police arrested one of the alleged gunmen in the shooting of his cousin. The suspect, Raul Hernandez, is accused of being a paid assassin for the Gulf cartel, which is one of Mexico's most powerful drug trafficking organisations and has its stronghold in Reynosa, where the murder took place. However, officials have not revealed a motive.

The band are all natives of Sinaloa, the mountainous Pacific state which is home to the Sinaloan cartel, the main rival to the Gulf-based mafia. Castro-Elizalde agrees that Reynosa is considered enemy terrain by the Sinaloan gangsters, whose kingpins, such as Joaquin 'Shorty' Guzman, have featured in their songs. 'Reynosa is their territory. There is no love for us Sinaloans there,' he said. 'We will never play there again - out of respect for Valentin.' However, he said there was a rumour that the attack may have had more to do with a song called For My Enemies, in which Elizalde wrote about envious rival musicians.

The police have made no arrests, named no suspects and revealed no motives in connection with the murders of the other 14 musicians, although they have said that they all bore the hallmarks of organised crime. Family members and fellow musicians have kept quiet about the killings, many admitting they fear for their own lives.

The lyrics talk with pride about drug trafficking, describing it as a route out of poverty. They mix in the expressions of the Sicilian mafia, calling the crime bosses 'capos' and 'godfathers'. And they herald the gangsters for being the valientes or 'brave ones' who are not scared of police or soldiers.

'The thing that can be hard for foreigners to understand is the pride that some Sinaloans have in being at the head of organised crime, said Elmer Mendoza, an author from Culiacan. 'Mothers can be proud that their sons have become gangsters, even if this leads to death, as it is a way that they have made something of themselves.''These ballads are perpetuating the problem, Mendoza said. Young children listening to the music want to become gangsters. That is very bad for Mexican society...'

You are an IDIOT! Your type that every time they get called out on their IDIOTIC statements immediately say something bad about the U.S. (Hollywood) People that do that and think like that are IDIOTS! Seems like you are brain washed into thinking that narco shit is "cool"... Ya, I bet he has a different perspective on playing "dress up narco" now, its no fucking game to be being played by IDIOTS... And just for the record the U.S. is not responsible for any of the psychopathic crap taking place in Mexico even if they bought all the drugs Mexico ever has produced or sold the 10 million guns that still does not make the U.S. responsible for anything taking place after the fact and anyone that thinks different is an IDIOT!

Think of this metaphor (I know you will have to look that word up, go ahead I will wait for you...)

Lets say Mexico is a truck and the U.S. is a camaro both are driving down the road...

The truck has been out all night and is driving 40 MPH over the speed limit and it runs into the camaro...

Is it the camaros (U.S.) fault for being in the trucks (Mexico) way?

  32. How can anyone in their RIGHT MIND glorify narcos or capos how are responsible for destroying the lives of people...

It's simple greed and vain glory for themselves..If he is such a goood person, then why is it okay to benefit from someones addictions...Of course you have corporations (food) that purposely put ingredients to hook people with their products..Cigerette companys purposely put chemicals in their products to hook customers..

The world we live in is saturated with confussion and lies that people can't tell the difference between good and evil...

If people think that singing a song is not harmless, think again..Brain washing techniques are simple repetitive words..In some third world countries, the children are taught certain sayings to promote HATE of rival enemies..These songs are preparing young kids minds to a life of drugs, murder, and whatever else..

Call it whatever you want, but, KARMA; is real WHAT YOU SOW, IS WHAT YOU REAP;, we are ALL accountable for what WE SAY, DO, AND ACT..And we don't get away with anything.!!!

Immediately resulting to vulgarities is a sure sign of ignorance and lack of any sensible debate... Mexico has not followed the laws of its own country and then they violate the laws of the U.S. i.e. crossing the border illegally and then Mexico wants to blame the U.S. for all of its psychopathic behaviors and problems...

No matter how you slice it or how many words you use to try and explain and manipulate the situation the facts remain the same and Mexico is responsible for creating its own hell on earth... It is Mexicans kidnapping, extorting, raping, torturing and killing other Mexicans on Mexican soil! Violating the laws of their very own country! Just think what Mexico would be like if Mexicans followed the laws! So there is no logical argument to profess the U.S. is responsible for generations of Mexicans being law breakers...

I know that because I speak the truth you are going to start typing in all caps while foaming at the mouth but just stop and think how much sense I make... Scary...

You right I shouldn't be laughing but its hard not to. When you see the stories of kids being shot for no apparent reason. And when you see the videos of people being tortured for not "Bending Over" for Mr. Guzman and company...You will learn to hate anything that has to do with any "Cartels". This young man chose to worship false IDOLS instead of doing something positive. How come they dance on stage with bullet proof vests? Are they narcos too? Why celebrate the DEATHS of RIVALS on their records?
Why sing about be-headings and LEVANTONES (KIDNAPPINGS)? Do they think its funny or amusing? When you worship evil, evil takes root in your heart and it will present itself in due time. So if I "laugh" at EVIL then you will have to excuse me...

Says narco corridos are just a form of singing the news, what is happening everyday in Mexico. It doesn't have anything to do with being or wanting to be a narco.

  50. I love the polemic this has stirred up. Ovemex: yes, they all say the same thing that they are just playing what the people want. A few years back I used to go out to see a friend's band, but quit once they really went to town with the narco-corridos. When he asked me why I don't go see them anymore I told him I was on strike. My argument is the following: the public doesn't know what it wants until it hears it and it is the job of the artist to show the public what it wants. And why not try inventing something completely new, or bring back something old? Mexican cinema made a comeback about ten years ago. I hope music does the same sometime soon. Of the six pre-set Spanish language stations on my car stereo, it is rare that I can flip between them and not encounter one narco-corrido.

Anything that has to do with the Evil that is ruining Mexico, I despise... I'm not "brainwashed" into believing there is such a thing as a "good murderer". I'm an adult, I know the difference between right and wrong. Good and bad. Did Bin Laden and Jeffrey Dahmer deserve corridos too? Or was that not "NEWS" worthy? If you know the guy pray for him to direct his talents to something positive. He is talented I'll give him that much...They need to grow up. Their voices reach millions. Why not use it for a better cause???

How many people can actually say that?

No it may not have been the smartest thing to sing about but it's what they had a PASSION for.

Gerardo Ortiz had been singing Corridos since he was a child and yes he did idolize all of the narcos but so fucking what. Just like everyone in the world idolizes negative things its what they chose.

Everyone is so fucking disrespectful that they seem to forget that these are human beings.

You're quick to think, "Oh he got what he had coming" but he's still a human being. Whether he sang narco corridos or not he didn't deserve to get kidnapped.

And he is not corrupting the future of Mexico. I was raised in one of the worst neighborhood and I wasn't corrupted my it.

  96. Well there could be several underling reasons why he was attacked on two occasions. Once in Mazatlan and now in Colima, too much of a coincidence I assume. Most of the other singers all rumored to had a reason to be wacked so there has to be a motive here.

I like corridos just like any other cabron but know how to distinguish music from music and not get caught up in all the hype because corridos are meant to listen too but you could easily get too caught up.

Colima was Nacho Coronel territory but la LFM was very much involved there and still is but also remember LFM and CDS supposedly have a handshake deal to work together. Could be Z's and BLV's or it could be some random criminals as well who have nothing to do with trafficking drugs.

Cea lo que cea nadie sabe, es mejor no hablar.
He did walk a thin line singing and composing corridos for Chaps, Mayo, M1 etc but consider this they get approached to sing these corridoes for these people. Once you chose to compose corridos narcos want you to sing about them and denying narcos a corrido is really disrespectful. The only reason I assume is he chose to sing more about CDS is because el es de Sinaloa compas and he isn't going to be singing about scumbag Z's and lineoros because that isn't his place.

A nadie se le desea la muerte, no ay que ser ignorantes Mexicanos, chicanos y Americanos dejen se de pendejadas.

That's ridiculous..he's an entertainer making money!! But on the same note, you put your life in your own hands, when you rise to the top because there are "haters," looking to see you fall.

The story is a little "cloudy" with regards to what happen? I mean, the driver was killed, the vehicle crashed, Ortiz and his father were removed by the assailants? Never mentions anything about being kidnapped. Then some are reporting he and his father are safe? Logically, if the group responsible wanted him dead, it would have happen at the time of the attack. Also, I think if he was kidnapped it would be for a ransom...not for his murder...he's worth money right? Oh well, either way I guess he'll be learning to sing the Blues....

Didn't we have these arguments back in the 90's? and it's a genre of music. If you like " Country music " are we going to call you a hilly billy redneck? Same thing says for Heavy Metal rock or any other music. Obvisouly he sells tickets and although he does sing corridos about narcos. It's a billion dollar industry. It's an easy scapegoat to say he is a reason why youth follow the different path. I have listened to corridos both narco and just corridos since I was a young kid, it's in my culture just like rancheras, marachi music, nortenas and cumbias etc. But the issue starts with how you were educated at home and distinguish music. Can you listen to the music con un buen cerebro? While I will admit there are " tastefull " narco singers and there are bad ones. Those who listen to them know what I mean. This guy does have talent as a composer and musician. If it's not your type of music don't listen to it. Just don't judge what you don't know. If you were in Mazatlan and they stormed the joint even after you had left, that should have gaven you a hint to beef up your security. It's easy for any malandros organization to try and take someone out. What is fishy is that they shot the SUV and killed the driver and his rep but he survived along with his dad and the girl. Sicarios get paid to finish the job, if they wanted him dead he would be dead. They could have easily shot the SUV waited till it wrecked then opened the doors to see if they were indeed dead.

LFM members are being executed in Tijuana by CDS. La resistencia claims to have a no aggression pact with milenio, famaila, golfo. They mention nothing about sinaloa. When la tuta was asked about el chapo in the phone interview he did, he clearly evaded the question. I have always felt that LFM and la resistencia were never given any aid by CDS. CDJNG was and is still slaughtering resistencia members in Jalisco as CDS sat back and watched the show.

Not really off topic, rumor has it that LFM or la resistencia were responsible for attacking Gerardo Ortiz and his people. Gerardo is not stupid, if he ever confirmed that he had cartel gunmen guarding him he would end up in a dirty Mexican jail accused of organized crime.

    The motive.
LFM and la resistencia have never liked nacho coronel's people but they had to work with them, this is a fact. When nacho coronel was killed, his people formed their own group called CDJNG in order to fight LFM in Jalisco and Colima. Gerardo O. seemed to have an obsession with singing corridos for coronel. LFM have lost many of their members to CDJNG members (coronel's ex sicarios). He you have your motive.

  143. i believe that its not up to a singer or actor or athlete to influence kids life. he just sang corridos which are really good by the way and that doesnt mean i wanna be a narco. ive listed to narco corridos all my life and im getting a degree in engineering. so i be bumping corridos on campus lol. so all you people wishing him bad stuff need to shut the fuck up and focus on your own fucked up life. he just needs to be more careful.

  144. there is a saying in mexico......"al cliente lo que pide" What do you expect singing narco corridos in this super heated atmosphere of narco war???? Look at his pictures and music videos, he is glorifying the narco lifestyle. Young poor kids think that shit is cool then they end up all acribillado. Narco corridos are destroying mexico. I'm just a dumb gringo and even I KNOW for a fact if your down in Mexico singing narco coorridos and flashing money and guns your gonna get whats comming.

  150. Lol i read people saying that hes a G and that hes tough and if we were put in that situation we would be bitches. Problem with that logic is that if you dont get involved in that kind of crappy lifestyle...u dont get bullets shot at you like that. and whos to say hes not crying like a little bitch like any other person probably would. Dont know the kid but seeing as he has ties with the cartels says hes a scumbag 2 so he can go to hell as well with all those narco scums

  151. Fuck all the haters. Gerardo is not a fucking narco. Hes been playing since he was little. To Me Hes One of The Best Singer. Thanks God Hes Ok. R.i.p To The Abel Valle Rosales and Ramiro Caro.

  152. I do not know much about Gerardo Ortiz, but hopefully the wounded women testimony can help find who took Gerardo Ortiz and Gerardo's father. Ojala Dios esta con ellos protecting Gerardo and his father. No one can judge, but God. I really do not think someone would like for that to happen to them, because I know I wouldn't. Hopefully, no one ever goes through this type of situation. But now in days, this is looking like something more common. Hopefully it stops within time.

  155. Per Phoenix news radio Gerardo Ortiz was spotted boarding a white 89 Chevy 4x4 Blazer at Food City off of Van Buren St and N 27th Ave in Phoenix Arizona this last weekend. He was accompanied by two latino males and 3 other vehicles followed him what looked to be a caravan pack. He apperaed to be in good health and was cheerful as always.

  163. This makes me so sad. I am African-American but, where I live, we just got our first Spanish language radio station and I love the music so much. I fell in love with this song "Millionario de Amor" and when I finally understood enough to learn the lyrics and find the singer online, imagine my surprise to learn about Sergio Vega and how he was killed because of all this narco madness.

I used to play this song all the time, but now, I don't want to. It reminds me so much of when Tupac and Biggie were killed and how people pose as "gangsta" rappers only to found out that some people take them at their word for real and bullets don't have a name on them. Innocent people get shot or killed all because others want to pose in the gangsta lifestyle.

And the people are right: los hijos escuchan. The children listen and mimic what adults do, not what we "tell" them to do. If they see this lifestyle as "cool" and able to make them money, then that's what they'll grow up to do.

Fake narcos, fake gangstas. It's all the same thing and it makes me so sad that some of the music I had come to love speaks to a lifestyle I could never have imagined I was endorsing.

  169. Just like arapper here in the United States who raps about the THUG life, Gerardo Ortiz sings corridos about the truth. I don't think hes "glorifying" the Narcos, he's just singing about them. There's a difference. & yeah I get it, the picture where he's all dressed up and what not, but rappers here dress up all ghetto'd out, or make music videos promoting the gang life too. I myself enjoy listening to his songs, doesn't mean I'm gonna join a cartel. & remember he's not corrupting Mexico, it's the actual drug lords and their followers who do all the killing. Either way, Mexico has a corrupt government, always has...so stop blaming the artisits, and STFU.

  170. All you gringos talkin smack...ala infierno....all your Hollywood goodfellas, sopranos etc...are some fakes...Robert dinero....ain't from no mafia...but they sure play a fake roll in theaters...any one who sings corridos pesados si saben....we sing what we know!!!!!

  171. those people that try and kidnapped gerardo dont have the balls to do a one on one

    ReplyDelete
  172. He was kidnapped for two Weeks.
    They asked for $30000 ransom.
Supposedly El Cartel de Sinaola paid up but the courier was tailed and caught by government official.
So again supposedly another organized crime group paid for his release in the condition that his sings for them now.
He got dope songs haters everywhere
Mainly cuz of the record company he's with.

  175. Wow. People are just amazing w/ all these comments. Mexico is a bad place, for now I have faith it'll get better but You reap what you sow, and so many musicians get on a payroll and well they're consequences for that. Some musicians are just targeted for their success yes, but that's how it is. It's a dog eat dog world. The US needs the narco wars to keep goin', how else is the average american drug addict gonna get their fix?
