Juárez Officer Among Members of Alleged Kidnapping Family

Mexican federal police said Thursday that they dismantled a family-run kidnapping gang in Juárez, and that one of the crime ring's members was a Juárez police officer.

Police also said they rescued a 14-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman who were kidnapped Sunday and raped during their captivity.

In total, police said they arrested eight members of the gang, including two minors.

Police identified three of the suspects as Felipe Arellano González, 44, a Juárez police officer; his wife, Yolanda Rueda Román, 45; and their son, a juvenile, who was identified only as Daniel N.

Also arrested were the alleged leader, Rogelio "El Rojas" Morales Barriento, 28; Ismael "Mayel" Elerizta Valadez, 20; Javier "El Javi" Ribota Talavera, 41; Nancy Lilia Nuñez Borja, 22; and a girl only identified as Paula N.

Police said they arrested the alleged kidnappers after they met with a family to pick up the ransom. Investigators followed them to a house in Melchor Ocampo, a central Juárez subdivision, where they arrested all eight and rescued the victims.

The gang called itself Los Rojas, police said. Police said its members kidnapped people near their homes and told relatives the victims would be hurt unless ransom was paid.

'Very violent week' in Juárez logs 60-plus slayings

Chihuahua state police reported more than 60 murders in Juárez last week.

"This has been a very violent week," said Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for the Chihuahua state attorney general's office, on Friday.

Sandoval said eight homicides occurred on Monday, 11 on Tuesday, 22 on Wednesday and about 15 on Thursday. As of Friday afternoon, five people had been killed, he said.

Hundreds of people have been killed in Mexico since the beginning of June in what Mexican authorities say will be the deadliest month since President Felipe Calderón began a war against drug cartels in late 2006. More than 180 people have been killed in Juárez since the beginning of June.

Chihuahua state homicide investigator shot to death in Juárez

A Chihuahua state homicide investigator was shot and killed today outside a home in east Juárez.

Jose Luis Rey Macias, 49, had been with the ministerial investigative police for nearly 18 years, officials said. He was fatally shot about 4:30 a.m. at a home on Congreso Nacional Constituyente and Tepalcingo streets in colonia Morelos III. No bullet casings were found.

The homicide took place the same day as the funeral for Juárez police officer Jazmin Mota Chavez, who was shot and killed when she arrived home Friday on her day off. Two other people were killed and three were wounded in that attack.

  4. Anon 8:06 PM makes a good comment. As long as there is no comparable work available, youths will seek drug work that will yield more in one month than Dad makes in one year! Arms will follow the money, if not the US, then the Guate-malan border from other countries. The "system",
government national/state/local,police is corrupt. A "mano duro" is needed!
