Albuquerque, New Mexico: DEA Explains Cartels’ Shifting Strategy To Push Fentanyl

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

As part of continuing coverage on the dangerous and often deadly drug, fentanyl, KOB 4 spoke with DEA El Paso Division spokesperson Carlos Briano, whose division covers New Mexico.

“This is a public safety, public health and national security threat to our country,” Briano said. “It’s really undermining every aspect of our communities.”

He said the majority of illegal fentanyl in America is coming from Mexico, and specifically from two cartels – The Sinaloa Cartel and Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación.

“They really have shifted to that synthetic opioid,” Briano said.
He said the change has occurred within the last three years.

The cartels are now making and pushing out much more fentanyl, and the DEA believes one reason is it’s cheaper and easier to make.

“Plant-based opioids are very labor-intensive. They consume a lot of resources,” Briano said. “They don’t have to do that anymore. They just take chemicals, precursor chemicals, from other countries and synthesize it into illicit fentanyl. They can make it anywhere. In deserts, in jungles, in apartments, in warehouses, in Air BnBs.”
Another reason is it’s very profitable, because of just how many people in America want it.

“We have an issue with demand in our country,” Briano said. “Until we start doing something about the demand, the supply is going to continue.”

The DEA is focused on prevention efforts, and agents have noticed a troubling trend – more and more people are mistakenly taking this drug thinking it’s something else.

On its website, the DEA has pictures that show only slight differences between legally-made fentanyl pills a doctor would prescribe and some of the cartel-made pills agents have seized.

Plus, there are new worries about cartels disguising fentanyl in other drugs. People may be thinking they’re taking Adderall to help them study, for instance, but they’re really taking fentanyl.

  1. might sound taboo but the US needs to relax regulation on doctors being able to prescribe methadone and suboxone. people will switch to methadone if they can get it prescribed like normal meds. not having to go to a clinic everyday but rather a script like any other prescription.

    1. Suboxone literally fucks you up worse than Heroine. Drugs need a reform instead of shit that turns you into a patient for other crap.

    2. That would be expensive AF, given the high amount of people in need for some kind of medication. Hopefully authorities find a solution before it worsens.

    3. 1:13 Problem are not drugs, but what leads you to consume them, or even worse, to depend on them.

    4. There is already a cheap , very effective Script for opioid withdrawals & associated cravings

I know , because it literally changed my life from dependence to freedom in days

      Bupenehprine -

Yet the docs are limited on qty of patients they can write . It’s a total addiction game changer and yet more controlled than makes any logical sense

    5. 01:13 well stated.

Only advantage of pushing Suboxone (buprenorphine aka synthetic heroin) is that it is a clean regulated supply and patients get what they expect because it is pharmaceutical quality.

The only reason heroin was outlawed is because the patent expired and it was more profitable to make semi synthetic or fully synthetic opioids instead of opium/heroin. Although codeine morphine and opium tinctures are still legal in the USA with a RX.

Really, all drugs should be legal and regulated
Doctors shouldn't be punished for prescribing stimulants, tranquilizers, and pain management solutions to individuals and those who abuse their prescriptions should be treated for addiction and not stigmatized.

Some people don't have self control but some do. Alcoholic people can't stop drinking alcohol once they start much like opioid users with no self control.

I have been prescribed prescription pain pills for 30 years. I can start and stop without problems, even if I become physically dependant and then stop, the withdrawals are not that bad.

I think Codeine and Oxycodone and Hydrocodone and Hydromorphone are great clean opiates.

      Morphine is horrible.

      That's just my two cents.

I'm allergic to NSAIDs and many synthetic drugs / meds.

    6. Dude I hate to tell you but suboxone doesn’t get you high after a few days on it. So it’s not anything like heroin. It’s an awesome drug to get you off the hard stuff. Little to no side effects.

  4. Just finished the episode w the second best scene of the series, Breaking Bad, where Hank gets his in the head. The best scene is coming up where Jack gets jacked-up, too. I love good cops, but have pure disdain for the liars.

  5. Getting a script for subs from your doctor isn’t fixing your addiction. But it could save you a lot of money when you’re used to paying for Roxie 30s for 50 a pop off the street

    1. I beg to differ. If getting off all the other stuff is what you are seeking suboxone is probably your best option on the market. It’s way more effective than methadone and your not getting buzzed out while your trying to get clean. If getting off street opiates and pills is what you really want suboxone is a very effective option. Probably the safest.

  8. After reading this article, it shows 2 Cartels shipping Fentanyl to USA.
Lopez Obrador government is only going for one Cartel, busting labs in Sinaloa.
But hardly touching the other cartel as a matter of fact, it's letting grow more powerfull, in over 28 States way to go Lopez Obrador, you are number 1.

    1. Cartels provide what dealers request. Dealers sells what users demand.

    2. I beg to differ on the Fetty pills. Most users think it’s a Percocet so no, they aren’t demanding Fetty. Now, Heroin shooters is different but the majority of ODs right now are from the pills.

    3. 4:36 Your trolling is too obvious

    4. 8:45 They would if it was more profitable. Greedy bastards..

It’s kind of ironic though because what they don’t realize is that in the end, if they actually did that with hydrocodone and oxycodone it actually WOULD be more profitable in the long term because demand would rise to the historic levels among both casual users and addicts. Enthusiasm would return in a huge way. Because right now everyone I know stopped opioids specifically because of fentanyl. Cartels don’t know what they’re missing honestly.

      Delete
    5. 4:36 keep telling yourself that boomer. Ya people are totally demanding a less euphoric opioid 🤦‍♂️ 🙄

      Delete
    6. 1:17 / 10:25 With all said... an obvious fentanyl crisis... dont see a valid reason to trust a street dealer when it comes to other drugs than 420. Same happens with every new drug dealers bring to the table... in that case, the ones lying on their customers are the dealers, not necessarily cartels. Grow up and accept the US have a problem with addictions and mental health. Detaining street dealers would be more effective than trying to find Mencho in Mexico.

      Delete
    7. 11:11 What is even your point? All we’re saying is that users want better opioids than fent. They just get lied to. It’s not that complicated

      Delete
    8. @4:36 Users demanding fentanyl? Yeah that must be why they’re specifically designed/pressed to look like oxycodone pills smh.. Quit being “that guy” and use your brain for once. Only reason cartels are picking fent over oxy is because it’s cheaper. Obviously the cartel knows people would rather have oxy but they don’t care. Their business model is shit.

    2. @Truther: Absolutely correct, amigo. I retired from many years in jail, prison and community drug abuse treatment, and understand your assertion.
IMo, America breeds people who become hedonistic, narcissistic, amoral, antisocial and just plain "stupid". Many come from dysfunctional families (even if wealthy and professional class,)... of course, the middle and poor dominate the drug and alcohol using poputaions.
All the above people have a common malady, they are: "Miserable"
As miserable they need relief.... Yep, they self medicate with alcohol and addictive drugs.... I could go on at length in more academic ways.... I a just keyboarding in agreement with your post.
