The Cousin Who Betrayed Rafael Caro Quintero

"Sol Prendido” for Borderland Beat

Video translation is as follows:

Sajid Emilio Quintero Navidad, cousin of Rafael Caro Quintero, was sentenced this past Wednesday in a federal court in San Diego, California to a prison sentence of time served, for which he could be released at a later date.

The sentence of time served issued this Wednesday is equivalent to about 69 months. This is counting the time that he has already served in federal prison since his arrest along with custody credits. As a Mexican citizen he could be deported upon release.

Since his arrest in 2017, this 41-year-old capo has spent less than 5 years behind bars. Quintero Navidad was arrested at the San Isidro port of entrance approximately a month after being accused by the United States government of trafficking hundreds of kilos of drugs to that country and laundering millions of dollars in illicit profits.

He is one of the highest-ranking drug traffickers ever arrested in the United States. He is linked to several homicides and kidnappings that occurred in 2012 in the city’s of Hermosillo, Agua Prieta, and Nogales in the state of Sonora.

Sajid Emilio Quintero Navidad aka El Cadete or Mata Músicos pleaded guilty in January 2018 to all charges brought by a federal grand jury a year earlier and agreed to pay the $1 million fine imposed by the US government.

The US government indicates that Quintero Navidad belonged to the Sinaloa Cartel and was a close collaborator of El Mayo Zambada. But later he changed alliances and joined the group of Los Beltrán Leyva.

It is alleged that when he entered the US, authorities at the San Isidro port of entry in October 2017, he became a key player in the criminal case that was filed against his cousin Rafael Caro Quintero in a Los Angeles court.

In an interview in 2018, the journalist Anabel Hernández asked Caro Quintero if he knew that his cousin had betrayed him. And if it's not Sajid, it's Sajid or someone else is lying, assured Caro Quintero in the interview.

Few details of the case have been made public and many documents including sentencing memos have been filed classified, according to the US media San Diego Union Tribune. In the underworld he was also involved in the murder of the corrido singer Tiro Torbellino. Whose real name was Tomas Tovar Rascón and in the attacks against the musicians Alfredo Olivas and Javier Rosas.

That's where the nickname of the Mata Musicos comes from. Tito Torbellino was shot 6 times at close range when he was in a Chinese restaurant in his native Ciudad Obregón in Sonora in May 2014. Singer Alfredo Olivas was shot when he was on stage in Chihuahua in March 2015.

And his colleague Javier Rosas was sprayed with twenty gunshots while traveling in a car through an intersection in March 2016. Sajid Emilio Quintero Navidad is currently being held in the San Diego metropolitan detention center.

His release date is unknown according to records at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. However, the media in that country indicate that he may be released very soon. Still others claim that Rafael Caro Quintero's cousin joined the DEA's witness protection program and has been one of his cousin's main detractors.

  2. It's been many months since I read a translation of the interview where Anabel Hernandez directly asked Rafa about the possibility that Sajid flipped on him. My memory of the translation is that Anabel Hernandez was convinced that Sajid was cooperating with U.S. authorities and Rafa seemed to agree with her. If someone could clarify if my memory is correct or if my understanding of the translation is correct, it would be greatly appreciated.
This part of the interview is the issue that I found most compelling and would like to read a good translation of this exchange if it is available. His extraordinarily lenient sentence suggests that he cooperated. It would be interesting to read a good translation of this exchange. Of course, if Rafa has a trial, we should get something definitive to see whether Sajid cooperated or not.
Thanks for posting this Sol. With Rafa's arrest and Sajid's impending release, I am sure I am not the only one curious about this. I am also curious to see if Sajid is charged for his crimes in Mexico or if a cooperation agreement bars those charges.

    1. I only did it cause SoCalJ's article had some genius in there claiming:

"Bet you clowns dont call him a snitchwithout anonymous as your name. Seems you fucks are so smart I aint heard of any quintero snitching. Tell me one you know matter of factly…. Wasnt any in chapos trial or any other enditement I read".

Yeah, I'm calling this clown a snitch as well. 😁 Sajid don't need you sucking him off either son.

    2. I did respond to his comment but am still glad you posted this.
We won't know anything definitive until the prosecution releases it's witness list. Reading an interpretation doesn't give you the tone or tenor of the conversation. Being fluent in Spanish, you have a better grip of what was not only said, but what was meant. By your headline it is clear that you believe that Sajid cooperated.
The big question now is, will he even have a trial. He is about 70 years old and the average man dies at about 75. It may take years to extradite him and years more for his trial to start. He doesn't have much better than a 50% chance of living long enough to be tried. If he does make it through trial and sentencing, the Rocky Mountain climate may be good for his health and he might live to be 90.
It's odd for them to release a codefendant witness, so it should be interesting to see how this plays out. They might release Sajid in the U.S. with a GPS monitor. I don't believe that Mexico would drop kidnapping and murder charges in exchange for his cooperation with U.S. authorities. The U.S. could frustrate his cases in Mexico by sending him to a third country if he testifies against Rafa.
His trial could turn out to be more interesting than Chapo's. There were no bombshells in Chapo's trial because we knew who the witnesses were years ahead of the trial. The prosecutor won't release a witness list until after Rafa is bound over which will be sometime. There is a possibility that we will learn something new in Enrique Camarena's murder case as well.
Please keep us posted as this plays out.

It's as if they can be mass murdering thieves but they have too much honor to snitch their way out of a life sentence. "They may kill women and children and extort hard working business owners but they would NEVER tell on anybody,"

  3. I believe the most likely scenario is that Sajid will be kept in immigration detention if he testifies against Rafa. Whether he testifies or not, I believe he will be deported to Mexico and only serve a few years for his crimes there.

    1. 10:28 his sentence was almost over, he got released about 10 years earlier, the bounty offered as reward was just a ploy for bounty hunters acting as "DEA" to make off with 20 million dollars from US treasury...
Just making up BS like El Chapo Escapes and arrests.
The people that count never fought to get RCQ extradited to the US, more like they fought to not having him or any Real Guadalajara cartel members on the US, or their accomplices on DFS, Policia Judicial Federal or melitary tried on the US of A, because they were the US Rogue Agents of Iran/Contra affair accomplices and they are still covering up a lot of shit, along with the Kiki Camarena murder.

    3. 2:53 the Guadalajara cartel was all Sinaloans, they never sang about their co-conspirators and accomplices in spite of their being in prison all the best years of their lives because they know they'll die like Barry Seal, Kiki Camarena and Manuel Buendia
