Michoacán Mayor's Daughter Arrested in US for Smuggling Guns and Almost $250,000 USD

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

Yeishi Moriya Villaseñor, the daughter of a mayor from the state Michoacán, was caught trying to smuggle firearms and large amounts of US cash into Mexico

Detention at the Border

On Monday, August 22, 2022, a woman, named Yeishi Moriya Villaseñor, tried crossing an Juarez-Lincoln international bridge from Laredo, Texas into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

Moriya Villaseñor is the 28-year old daughter of Artemio Moriya Sánchez, the mayor of Tacámbaro, Michoacán, a town located south of the city of Morelia. She works at a company called El Surco, an agricultural store which sells things like fertilizer, in Tacámbaro.

During routine outbound questioning by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, Moriya Villaseñor gave conflicting answers to questions about her time spent traveling in the US so she was sent to secondary inspection. When a CBP officer patted her down, they found three hidden bundles of US cash at her waistband.

Moriya Villaseñor allegedly claimed she did not declare the hidden cash at customs because she did not want to pay the taxes for it. This seemingly routine border detention changed, however, when agents x-rayed her vehicle, a 2022 Volkswagen Passat. The agents found discrepancies in both her driver’s side and passenger side rear doors.

CBP agents further inspected the doors and found hidden compartments which housed two firearms and large stacks of cash. The two firearms were a 9mm Glock and a Colt 1911.

When bringing an amount of cash over $10,000 USD out of the country, a person is required to declare it as part of customs. The cash found on her waistband and the cash found in the vehicle totaled up to $248,531 USD or 4,955,760 pesos.

The cash and guns were seized, Moriya Villaseñor was arrested on charges of money laundering and she was sent to Webb County Jail where she remains as of the writing of this story.

Her Version of Events

She stated she had the cash and guns in her possession due to the following events, as written by César Rodriguez for the Laredo Morning Times

On August 13, a male approached her at her business, handed her a phone and told her that Maluma wanted to talk to her. She stated that Maluma is also known as Eduardo in her hometown of Tacámbaro, Michoacan. Villaseñor stated she had known Eduardo as an acquaintance for two years but had not heard from him, according to court documents.

Eduardo asked her if she would be traveling to Dallas soon. She told him she was going to make a trip to Dallas this coming week. Eduardo told her to contact him once she was in Dallas so she could transport some money to Tacámbaro, Michoacan.

On August 18, Villaseñor was traveling to Dallas with her boyfriend and two children when she received a WhatsApp message with an address in Dallas. She was told to report to that location where she was greeted by Eduardo and three other males. She was told to go get something to eat and leave her vehicle behind.

When she returned, Eduardo told her that her car was ready and gave her $3,000 for transporting the money. An additional $3,000 was given to her for another person in Tacámbaro, Michoacan.

Then came the fateful border crossing on August 22. Mayor Artemio Moriya Sánchez has not yet issued a statement on her arrest.

Smuggling that much cash into Mexico may have an organized crime aspect to the motive. Tacámbaro is located in a region of Michoacan which is currently considered to be Pueblos Unidos territory, who are part of the larger Carteles Unidos alliance which fights against the Cartel Jalsico Nueva Generación (CJNG).

For more information on who Pueblos Unidos are and who they are fighting against in the CJNG, please see the overview in this previous story. For more information on all the groups operating in Michoacan, please see:

  1. She doesn't look so hot in her jail uniform. She won't be seeing her kids for a couple of years and can forget about travelling to the U.S. legally for some time. I hope they picked up the boyfriend for questioning as well.

  2. Are there any government or relatives of government and police army etc who are not involved with the cartels. It seems its only the poor who are not and as soon as anyone gets a chance to make money from the cartels they grab it including autodefensas. Something has to change in Mexico but you cant lock up half the country for being complicit in this and by extension with cartel violence. Guess which cartel her dad works for

  6. Foreign nationals forget that entering the U.S. is a privilege and not a right that is revocable at any time. Thirty years ago, criminals could stay in the U.S. if their crime wasn't too severe or return after spending some years outside of the U.S. But those days are coming to an end.

    2. 7:05 That's a new one to me, shows you how much time I haven't been to Mexico. Since when did they have US Border patrol checking cars, headed into Mexico???

    3. 7:39 since 2007 +/-, but not every time. Mostly on a regular basis. It should be permanent.

    4. 7:39 since they realized there was money there, worth a lot more than drugs coming in...

    5. 7:39:
They've been checking cars going into Mexico for more than 30 years. I used to cross 6 times per week and got stopped about once or twice per year. If you crossed then it's unlikely you would have been stopped if you only crossed the border five or ten times per year.
About twenty years ago they started to pick up the pace and some of these inspections would last all day days on end.
These operations used to be really sporadic and you would go months without being stopped and then stopped three days in a row.
Now they are more routine and depend on the border station.

    4. And she had a fake Ukrainian passport.

    5. Those check points are installed randomly, and commonly with no scanners or x rays, mostly agents doing questions and inspections, not even with dogs. Mostly sounds like they got a hint from somewhere.

      Delete
    6. 12:54:
The X-ray threw me off too. I am thinking that they turned her around and sent her to inbound secondary because they don't have an outbound secondary inspection area. It's mostly a couple of questions involving currency over $10,000 and guns and that's it. In El Paso they usually only stop about one in ten cars and they usually only last for a few hours.
If they had a halcon at the bridge she could have just crossed another bridge.

Yes, that's the norm. About 75% of all defendants who aren't gang members spill the beans right after their arrest. Gang members are more difficult and savvy to the system but do sometimes give up their compadres without any incentives. The younger gang members have a tendency to be difficult to crack. Older gang members often start to cooperate when you start throwing big numbers at them.

I don't deny hard work and knowledge of agriculture and work methods have made the mormons a fortune, along with their family work practices, but that gives them no right to threaten Mexico with secession or to request intervention or anybody else or cartels the right to abuse them, but truth is truth

  15. I don't understand. The article says she was stopped for "routine outbound questioning by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents." This was when she was about to drive her car over the main bridge from Laredo to Nuevo Laredo. I've crossed that bridge into Mexico many times over the past 30 years (sometimes with U.S. plates, sometimes with Mex plates), and I've never been stopped for "routine questioning" on the U.S. side. The only stop there is to pay the bridge toll, with no questions asked. (On the other hand, I've been stopped and occasionally searched by Mexican Customs on the Mexican side.) So there must be some reason other than "routine questioning" to explain why this woman was stopped.
