2 Journalists Killed By Gunmen In Veracruz: 10th And 11th This Year

By "Narcomappingmx" for Borderland Beat

Journalists Yessenia Mollinedo Falconi and photographer Sheila Johana García Olivera were killed in an armed attack this afternoon in Cosoleacaque, Veracruz around 3 pm. Yessenia was the founder of El Veraz, a news portal reporting on the Cosoleacaque region.

According to local reports, the two were ambushed by armed gunmen while they were parked in an Oxxo parking lot. Photos circulating online show Garcia slumped in the front seat of a Silver Ford Focus, struck and killed by bullets. Yessenia was alive at the scene, but died before first responders could bring her to the hospital.

No suspects have been arrested. Local authorities have asked the public to submit any tips or information that may help them locate the killers.

They are the 10th and 11th news workers killed in Mexico this year, and happens just days after Mexico reeled from the news that journalist Luis Enrique Ramírez was found dead in Sinaloa.

This years toll has already surged past the 7 killed in Mexico in 2021. Despite outcries, little has been done to stop the accelerating trend.

The mortal threats faced by journalists in Mexico have caused organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), or Reporteros Sin Fronteras (RSF) to routinely rank Mexico as one of the most dangerous nations to be a reporter in.

This story will be updated as new information is released.
