“My Husband Was Burned To Death By Cartels”: Mexican Mother, After Receiving Asylum In Chicago

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

"Now my four children and I are targets," says one of the three women who fled Mexico with her family in search of protection in US territory due to drug threats

CJNG announces that they’re going against El Chaparro, the drug trafficker whom it blames for the massacre in Michoacán, Mexico.

Three Mexican mothers and their 10 children received asylum in Chicago, after they fled their country; two of them for fear of being killed by drug cartels, as happened with their husbands.

One of them narrated that drug traffickers burned her husband and she trusts that the help she received through the United Giving Hope Refugee Program, will allow her to rebuild her life in the United States. She also recalled the moments of anguish she went through, after receiving the news that members of organized crime had burned her husband, as reported by Univisión Chicago.

According to "Elizabeth", in Mexico there is no government support for women like her, much less protection for children and adolescents, who are orphaned by violence related to drug cartels. “My husband was brutally murdered by the drug cartels. He was burned to death. Since I am seeking justice for him, now my four children and I are targets. We will be killed because there is no protection in Mexico,” she commented.

The exodus

The Mexican Commission for the Defense and Promotion of Human Rights (CMDPDH) informed the media that between 2009 and 2020 thousands of people were forced to leave their homes due to threats from drug traffickers. In total, there was a figure of 357,000 Mexicans displaced by conflict and violence. That's not all, because the numbers were still in the red a year later, between 2020 and 2021, there were 37,000 displaced people.

Given this, US legislators and immigrant rights advocates asked the government headed by Joe Biden to reverse Title 42, explaining that there is no longer a public health risk to maintain this policy, since they consider that the COVID-19 pandemic COVID-19 has managed to be controlled in the United States.

“We know that the White House wants to prevent a massive influx of migrants and asylum seekers,” said United Giving Hope President Julie Contreras. It should be noted that the women and children arrived at Chicago Midway Airport on the night of April 1, after a stay in different shelters in Mexico, while their situation was being resolved.

“We have been hiding. We praise God for having found the United Giving Hope Refugee Program, which has given us hope and saved our lives,” said another of the women who benefited, whom we will call Guadalupe.
