'El 300' reputed hit squad leader part of Chihuahua faction of Sinaloa cartel

A reputed cartel death squad leader from Chihuahua known as "El Bin Laden of the Sinaloa cartel" has been transferred to one of Mexico's toughest prisons.

Antonio Leonel Camacho Mendoza, who also is known as "El 300," is accused of being one of the major generators of violence in the Parral region of southern Chihuahua, the state attorney general's office said.

"El 300" is suspected of heading a group of sicarios, or hit men, for the Gente Nueva Los Salgueiro faction of the Sinaloa cartel in Chihuahua, officials said.

Mexican authorities only identified him as Antonio Leonel C.M. in keeping with rules regarding the naming of crime suspects. However, news accounts have reported his full name.

'El 300' caught in Chiapas

On March 13, Camacho was arrested at a hotel in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, in a raid operation by the Mexican army and National Guard troops, as well as federal and Chihuahua state agents, the Chihuahua attorney general's office reported.

He was arrested on a warrant on a charge of homicide out of Chihuahua, officials said.

On Sunday morning, federal officers transferred "El 300" under tight-security to Mexico's maximum-security Cefereso No. 1 federal prison outside Toluca in the Mexico City region, the Chihuahua attorney general's office said.

The reputed cartel hit man, who also is known by the moniker "Bin Laden," was flown on a National Guard plane and then transported in an armored vehicle in a transfer secured by nearly 50 soldiers, federal and state agents, officials said.

Cefereso No. 1, also known as "Altiplano" or "Almoloya," houses some of Mexico's most notorious criminals. In 2015, Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escaped from the prison through a nearly mile-long underground tunnel.

Reputed cartel hit squad leader Antonio Leonel Camacho Mendoza, known as "El 300" and "El Bin Laden of the Sinaloa cartel" is escorted off of a Mexico National Guard airplane as he is transferred Sunday to Cefereso No. 1 maximum security prisons near Mexico City.
