US Suspends Avocado imports From Mexico After Threat To US Inspector

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

The United States has suspended avocado imports from Mexico's western state of Michoacan after a US official received a threat, Mexico's Agriculture Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) decided to pause until further notice the avocado inspection activities in Michoacan after one of its officers, who was carrying out inspection work in Uruapan, Michoacan, received a threatening call to his official cell phone.

Michoacan is the only state in Mexico authorized to export avocados to the United States.

APHIS-USDA reported that an investigation is currently underway to assess the threat and determine the necessary measures to guarantee the physical integrity of all of its personnel working in Michoacan.

A meeting was held between APHIS personnel and representatives of the Association of Avocado Exporting Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM) with local and state police to address the issue.

"The APEAM is actively participating in coordination with the authorities of both countries to resolve the problem in order to reinforce internal practices and processes that guarantee the traceability of the fruit.

The facts mentioned here have already impacted the economy of the entire program, affecting the industry and the more than 300,000 jobs that depend on it. We encourage all those actors in this value chain to take extreme care and vigilance to preserve such an important export program," the APEAM said in a statement to the media.

Following protocols, personnel from the US health agency inspect the avocados that would be shipped and once approved, the avocados are moved to the packaging process, the ministry mentioned.

Even if the ban doesn't last long, it could lead to higher prices. Supply chain disruptions, even small blips, can affect prices, explained Mark Campbell, founder and CEO of ProduceIQ, a digital marketplace for produce buyers and growers.

Avocados that have already made it into the US from Mexico are now more valuable because there is uncertainty about future supply, he explained. And higher wholesale prices are likely to be passed on to consumers.

In the past six weeks, Michoacan avocado producers have exported more than 135,000 tons of avocados to the United States, the Agriculture Ministry said.

Michoacan's geographic position to the Pacific Ocean has made it a turf war between criminal organizations that fight for territory and the profits from other industries such as the avocados.

  1. Relatives tell me that along with avocados, lime growers are also being extorted. Cartels are now dictating the prices associated with these products. Fees & payoffs are being added to somewhat offset the difference in losses.
My assumptions are that intimidating a US official to get with the cartel program would have gone unanswered.
Expect Mexico's government to intervene due to the economic impact this will have. NAFTA brings revenue essential to Mexico's economy.

  3. It's not a drug war. It's a commodities war. Avocados, Limes, Petrol, and I believe walnuts are all being subjected to the black market. Greed not drugs are the problem.Kids with no future employment prospects see these Cartel members looking Gucci and they fall in line. I read an article that even Mexico's natural minerals are being stolen and sold to the highest bidders. Ironic one guy gets a threatening call and the Avocado market comes to a screeching halt. Meanwhile like half a million people are killed or disappeared over meth, coke, weed, Fantanyl and the wheels just keep on turning. When will enough be enough?? The Army and Navy are fighting guys equipped with as good if not better weapons. Submarines, planes, drones, land mines, tanks, armored vehicles it's a regular David v Goliath. The only way this can end is if a fully trained and equipped military gets involved. I realize Mexico wants to protect their sovereignty and rightfully so. But at what cost?? A million dead? 2 million?? There is no end in sight. Not even a hint of things getting better. They are getting worse and worse. I know it's a taboo subject to talk about but wouldn't innocents and every day people feel safer in their own homes and towns if the U.S. Military was asked to intervene?? A full scale US military operation could wipe the Cartels out. The U.S. military is used to Urban Warfare after Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It amazes me that the Mexican and American Governments can just keep talking but taking no real action whatsoever. The Iraqi National Guard was a highly skilled military unit and we were in Baghdad in three days! Why not have the US and the MX militaries join forces? It would be tougher for corrupt MX military members to carry on with their corrupt ways.If I had children in MX I sure as hell would back ANYONE who can at least slow this butchering down if not end it. The War on Drugs has been going on twenty years and it just gets bigger, badder, and more deadly. Who is ever going to devise a plan to end these atrocities?? Not MX govt or military because they have been corrupted and for them to really try to rid MX of Narcos is ridding them of their main source of income-Bribe money.

    1. Interesting comment.
In the end economic failures by Mexico's government is why they have a problem. Poverty is tough.

    2. 843 actually, wage disparity between Latin America and the 2 gringo countries to the north is why Latin America, (not just mexico) is facing these problems.

    6. Let me piss you Michoachangos off with some facts. Michoachangos extort small businesses, avocado, lemon and strawberry farmers, destroy roads, communication services, plant land mines and drop drone bombs. They create fake autodefensas to disguise their criminal activities, cry for military intervention and greet the soldiers with violence. They are responsible for the illegal logging of an endangered tree in Michoacan, and as a result they are endangering the monarch butterfly population and the most recent... Michoachangos are responsible for the avocado import suspension by the U.S because they felt they had yo let that U.S inspector know he was in Michoacan 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️. Oh boy 3.0 (as chivis would say) . de por si estan pa la madre and your people bust out with that mamada, but don't tell michoachango that because they will accuse you of being a Snitchaloan.🤣🤣🤣

    7. What an ignorant reply. I can't comprehend all these comedians, trolls, geniuses and so on that be posting up nonsense. Want to start bad mouthing other states, people, etc. What do you guys get out of that? Or are you guys that miserable that you have to degrade something or someone and bring someone down so you could step on them and make yourself feel a little bit 🤏 bigger. Is that how pathetic you are. Seriously, I'm trying to understand this type of people. What motive you got? You act like Michoacanos are the only ones like that and it's all Michoacanos. It's not, and it's not just Michoaconos there doing bs. It's Mexicans from different states. And it's in alot of different places in Mexico. Educate yourself, be positive and instead of wasting all that energy on putting up nonsense comments, think of solutions and/or just gaining knowledge. If you can't do that, atleast refrain from posting nonsense. The people from Michoacan are already going through enough fu@#*! up sh@#!, they don't need you tacking anything else on.

Avacados bring in money to Mexico. Wonder if Obradors government will step in on this one. Or look the other way, or act on it 6 months later.
