"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

A Zapopan policeman was murdered while driving to his morning shift in Zapopan, Jalisco state by a group of armed men. He had recently been assigned to the protection detail of the Security Commissioner.

On the morning of October 24, 2021, Officer Armando Jacob Reyes Jiménez was driving to work at the police station where he worked as a Zapopan police officer. Zapopan is the western area of the greater Guadalajara metropolitan area, in the state of Jalisco.

Officer Reyes Jiménez was 30 years old and had already served seven years as a police officer. At the beginning of that month, on October 1, 2021, he was assigned to be a part of the protection detail for Security Commissioner Jorge Alberto Arizpe García.

At around 5:45 am local time, Officer Reyes Jiménez had just pulled up to the intersection of Antimonio and Plomo streets, located in the San Isidro Ejidal neighborhood of Zapopan. Officer Reyes was in his 2006 red Ford Fiesta. According to witnesses his stopped vehicle was intercepted by several armed men who shot him several times without saying a word, and then fled in a red Nissan Versa.

Officer Reyes suffered no less than five gunshot impacts to the skull in the attack. Witnesses called the emergency phone line and both police and paramedics arrived on scene. By the time paramedics arrived, Officer Reyes no longer showed vital signs.

Later, the Zapopan police station officially confirmed that the victim was an active member of his corporation and attached to the Canine Tactical Unit. They confirmed Armando Jacob Reyes was on his way to begin his shift when he was assassinated.

The execution of Officer Reyes makes the total number of officers who have been killed in Jalisco so far this year. The most recent case prior to Officer Reyes took place on September 5, 2021, when four policemen from the Encarnación de Díaz Police Station had died in the middle of a shootout at Libramiento Sur.
