Recent Release of 'The Roadrunner' Will Bring More Violence to Guerrero, Specialists Say

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat

Félix Alejandro Magno Acevedo, alias "El Correcaminos" (The Roadrunner) and/or "El Alex", is one of the top leaders of the Independent Cartel of Acapulco, a spin-off group of the Beltran Leyva Organization.
One month after the release of the leader of the Independent Cartel of Acapulco (CIDA), Felix Alejandro Magno Acevedo, alias "El Correcaminos" (The Roadrunner), violence is expected to increase in Acapulco and its surrounding areas, federal government officials revealed.

Investigators presume that he is trying to regain control of Acapulco and other areas of Guerrero.

On May 31, 2021, the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office reported that a federal judge allowed Magno Acevedo to fulfill the remainder of his sentence in conditional release. The judge said that Magno Acevedo showed "good conduct" in prison.

Authorities indicated that he was held at a federal prison in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, for five years and still had 7 years left in his sentence.

It is worth mentioning that Magno Acevedo was a criminal re-offender. He was first arrested in 2013 for kidnapping, drug dealing, car theft, homicide, and organized crime involvement. But Magno Acevedo was released from prison and resumed his criminal activities. He was re-arrested in 2016 and remained behind bars until last week.

Sources consulted by Borderland Beat indicate that criminal re-offenders do not qualify for conditional release. That would mean that Magno Acevedo should not have been allowed to fulfil the remainder of his sentence under such terms granted by the federal judge.

Aftermath

Following his release, authorities say that Mago Acevedo ordered more violent acts against rival groups in the area.

There are several neighborhoods in Acapulco that have a strong CIDA presence. Among them are La Venta and Caleta. La Venta is where hitman leader Marcos Parra de Jesús, alias "El Panadero", operate; in Caleta, cartel member Josué Bladimir Palacios Galeana, alias "El Cacho" or El "Lic", operates. His brother of José Ángel, alias "El Capuchino", was responsible for expanding the CIDA's operations in the state of Michoacán.

In neighborhoods María de la O, Derrumbe, Mozimba, Las Cruces, Renacimiento, Zapata and Morelos, gunmen under the command of Hermilo Blanco Rodríguez (alias "El Milo") operate. He works alongside Antonio Muñoz Lara, alias "El Bolillo", Marcos Parra, and Abner Noe Cervantes.

The CIA is currently competing against the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and other groups for control of Guerrero's drug-producing areas and lucrative plazas.
