Cartels Take to Social Media to Peddle Deadly Fentanyl Pills, DEA Says

"Anonymous" for Borderland Beat

A wave of the illegal synthetic drug fentanyl is coming to the border on its way to the American heartland. But some of it is staying in border communities like El Paso, where law enforcement officials say gangs are using social media platforms to market the illicit and potentially deadly pills to potential consumers of all ages.

“The majority of those pills are being made to look like actual pharmaceutically-produced medications, but they are counterfeits, laced with fentanyl. These pills are being sold throughout the United States by transnational cartels through various methods, including social media,” said Carlos Briano, spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso Division.

U.S. health experts blame the record 93,000 drug overdose deaths during 2020 largely on an increase in the consumption of synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, whose manufacture is cheap and potency 50 to 100 times higher than that of morphine.

“The drug overdose crisis in the U.S. is a clear and present public health, public safety and national security threat, and synthetic opioids like illicitly manufactured fentanyl continue to remain the primary driver of increases in drug overdose deaths,” Briano said.

The DEA reports that 159 kilograms of the opioid have been seized by law-enforcement agencies in the El Paso Division so far this fiscal year. That is almost four times what they seized in FY 2020 and three times as much during pre-coronavirus pandemic 2019. All 23 DEA divisions are reporting increases in seizures this year, Briano said.

Most of the pills are coming from Mexico, where law-enforcement officials fear they, too, will be dealing with consumption, addiction, and overdose deaths of the deadly synthetic opioid in a few years.

El Paso is one of 11 DEA divisions nationwide taking part in Operation Wavebreaker, which aims to disrupt the trafficking of fentanyl. The agency says the Sinaloa cartel, whose cells primarily operate in Juarez’s Lower Valley, is one of the main transnational criminal organizations exploiting America’s opioid epidemic.

“Please talk to your loved ones about these latest stats. Have open, honest conversations. Seek helpful resources you can find at www.dea.gov or call 1-800-662-HELP for treatment referrals,” Briano said.

‘It is a new drug for us’

“It is a new drug for us, but it is following the same trends as crystal meth,” said Ricardo Realivazquez, Chihuahua state police Chief in Juarez.

“Crystal started showing up at the border in small amounts, then for (export), then we started seeing distribution and street sales. Today we seize crystal meth in small doses, which means the consumers are here.”

The police chief said the fentanyl is coming to Juarez from labs in the interior of Mexico. No local labs have been discovered and no precursor chemicals like benzylfentanyl, anilinopiperidine-4 or norfentanyl have been found. State police fentanyl seizures in Juarez have come in “large amounts” so far, though the police chief did not immediately provide statistics.

“That means it is still brought here to be crossed into the United States, but we are not exempt from seeing single-dose amounts on the streets in a short time,” he said.

Juarez has long been a springboard for drugs into the United States and, as of the last few years, also a budding consumer market for meth, marijuana, heroin and cocaine. The drug cartels often pay their gang members in drugs, which are in turn sold on the streets.

Mexican police say these sales are fueling increased violence and homicides, as the gangs fight for territory. The sales are getting sophisticated as well – it’s not just people selling out of street corners anymore.

“It is distributed through dealers and pushers in what we call tienditas (little stores), where people go buy (drugs),” Realivazquez said. “Recently, we find that the dealers carry less drugs with them. It is a strategy of organized criminal gangs to minimize their losses and be able to hire a lawyer and get their dealer out of jail.”

The in-house sales are driving addiction rates up in Juarez, the police chief said. Nonprofits in that city estimate more than 100,000 residents are addicted to or consume drugs regularly. Now the concern is to prevent the consumption of fentanyl pills.

“We need to train our police officers because it is a drug that generates addiction. We learned how to deal with crystal and cocaine (addictions), but not fentanyl,” Realivazquez said.

  1. This is proof that drug consumption in Mexico is destroying cities like Juárez and Tijuana. It’s no longer Americans consuming drugs. But most of the Mexican government does not want to publicly recognize this because it’s not convenient for their narrative. I get the “blame the gringos” a few years ago for the drugs, and still today for most of the weapons, but Mexico needs to look in the mirror too and fix their drug problem before it turns into something worse.

Correct about Mexico's addiction problem. Mexico has a consumption problem like that of their neighbors (US).
Rehabilitation centers are in abundance, meaning an epidemic of drug usage has become a health issue. My previous vacation in cancun & playa de Carmen clearly defined this. Iffy & shady characters around the centers.

    4. 7:40 mexico's incompetence has been fueled by US and european greed, helped by drug trafficker countries with US Carte Blanche like Culombia and Spain, the Chinese just keep doing their jobs outsourced to them by foreigners and pirating all the technologies and brands they can in exchange for the low wages they get to better enrich the rich who even partner with them in the drug addictinh of the world, one example is HSBC the formerly Hong Kong british bank, all they want is to keep getting everybody's money to their safes

  6. What's sad is that the cartels would turn to synthesizing real oxycodone over Fentanyl if fent wasn't so much cheaper to make. Fentanyl testing for drugs needs to be the new norm. Look at what happened with 25i-NBOMe and LSD.. now because of testing reagents, 25i is almost completely gone from the "LSD market". But LSD users tend to be less desperate and more thoughtful in their doings than opioid users.

    3. Idk how hard it is- but i saw how some cartel just killed a kid who was studying to become a exactly what you mention, in tijuana. Not pharmacy school- i forget his exact title. But he was basically going to be a scientist making drugs. LEGIT pharmacy company drugs. They came along and told him to “work with us or else” blah blah- he chose not to and ended up getting the “or else” and is gone now. What a pathetic story.

I didnt really understand why they would need to do some shit like that. Their already making near pure meth. I guess if their looking to make new drugs, then that makes sense.

As far as the cartels making real oxy- it just isnt going to happen, going off of price and ease of making fent. Theres nothing in it for them to change to oxy. If some people die, thats just the cost of business for them. Just like a random “drug bust.” Your going to lose some along the way.

Rip to that student- sad stuff

  7. Shut the borders and kill all the dealers or life sentences to the dealers at the very least . Let Mexico do things their way whats best for them . We need to do whats best for us ,no pointing fingers no blaming no bullshit just focus on our problems its like when your in a bad relationship you dont blame eachother you just go your own way and do whats best for you .And right now we are in a horrible relationship with Mexico where the majority think in terms of Narco Culture that its cool to poison others and profit from it which really is some of the shittiest things to do to anyone anywhere . And it needs to end .

But Puerto Rico is a free associated US territory and has gigantic problems and debt and poverty almost like Cuba's.
Venezuela is having enormous problems compounded by the US stealing of their oil, process facilities, money in the banks, economic blockades and political intrigues until they deliver their oil industry for another hundred years to US Oil Pirate Interests that had their country broke ass and living in poverty too.

  8. It was bound to happen. The opiad crisis left a void when th US government hit the pain management doctors who have slowly turning to basic practice. Someone had to fill the void so now the Cartels are the new suppliers instead than the medicine that was prescribed was knocked out by the US government. I see it with friends who's pain management left town. Now there's a big demand for fake oxys which are made with Fentynal.

    1. If i didnt see this whole thing with my own eyes, i wouldnt have believed it.

Florida, back in the “pill mill” days, was total insanity. Those clinics had “mobile mri labs” set up in trailers behind clinics. Doctors pushing pretty much whatever you asked for- a pharmacy right next door, CASH ONLY. Theres going to be some really good books about it all in the future, hopefully. I read 1 a while back that was talking about the “george twins.” Jeff george and his brother, i forget his name. They were making 50k$ per day, minimum, per clinic. And they had like 5. Great book.

It was already of of control at this point. But some lady pulling out of the twins clinic, tried to beat a train across the crossing in front of a clinic, and got hit by the fuggin train. When le got there, there was oxys all over the street. Its was that crazy. Open dealing in the lots, that had armed security out front. People od’ing in the office, or their cars outside. So many people made so much money off that. A lot of them never got caught. Truly an insane time.

And prior to that, they were doing it where you could go through a website, pay them like 250$ for 3 scripts, and some random doctor in florida would call you as soon as the paperwork was done, and they got paid. 5 min of conversation, and they would fax your shit to whatever pharmacy you wanted them to.

I could ramble on about all that for hours- still hard to believe it happened. But its all about money at the end of the day.

    2. 5:42 before the US Government knocked out the US prescription addicts, they made opioids legal by laws enacted by republican senators and congressmen bought and paid by Big Pharma, by the time they stopped because of the opioid epidemic they had hundreds of thousands of dead and millions of addicts that became the clients of illegal opioid pushers, aaight?
Same with cocaine, heavily trafficked to the US by the reaganauta "rogue agents" of Iran/Contra fame waaay before Ronie got elected to office...
By the time the jig was up, the US had been ADDICTED to reaganautricks, cocaine, mariguana, and the billions and billions of dollars product of the drug economy.

  9. I remember an article on BB saying that the chapitos were the major players in moving fentanyl I don’t understand why they aren’t priority number 1. Even their heroin, meth and cocaine is mixed with it and people consume it without know. Terrorists I’d say.

    2. Well that’s exactly what led to the Battle of Culiacán incident. Guzman’s son was arrested for fentanyl trafficking into the U.S. so a U.S. judge signed the warrant and led to that whole thing with the national guard.

They’re also not purposely mixing the fentanyl with anything other than heroin. It only gets into meth and coke because of cross contamination back in the U.S. Meth and Fent also have a lot of the same trafficking routes from what I understand because they’re synthetics. But ya, chapitos and fentanyl; it’s a problem.

  10. I work in a homeless shelter in Seattle. We are seeing huge amounts of these blue fentanyl pills. They were selling for $30 a couple years ago. Now they are $10, $5 if you have a good connection. Seasoned junkies have been ODing on them and we have to do chest compressions on them. Our clients have started smoking them instead of injecting them because the potency is unpredictable, harder to OD if they get an extra strong batch.

  11. gee now this all seems like a way more effective use of our time and energy than simply legalizing and educating drug hobbiest' on how to use safely if they are gonna use, take out the illegality you remove the criminal mentality and the huge profits. overall use stablizes and everyone can focus on something else to do with their time instead of being so preoccupied with what the other man chooses to do. it aint governments job to be a nanny to everyone like everyones a kid in a school yard, we already have laws that deal pretty well with people whose behaivor gets out of line without the need to compound the situation by allowing the government to prohibit substances that ADULTS, choose to partake in.

I used to believe otherwise, and if you still believe otherwise then im sorry to say I was wrong, the question is not if but when you are going to come to terms with being wrong yourself now.

time for a change folks and i dont mean that farce of a cash shortage being schemed. just like this notion of a cashless society spoke in terms of security, prohibition of drugs aint about health at least not that health of any individual citizen, its all about the continued health and growth and acceptance of the state as an over arching power appartus bent on middling their way into every facet of an individuals life, its about control period.

prohibition enables crime it creates it, it embeds it, it ensures/insures it, it requires it.
you wana keep living in fantasy land and believe otherwise you keep doing that to your own and others detriment. drugs arnt for everybody, i choose not to do drugs but id be damned if im gonna sit here and rally for a super state police bueracracy as a solution to the very mess they created...standard operating procedure of problem, reaction, solution...heres my quick take on that game plan, if you want to know theirs one only need read the countless horror stories posted here and through out the net to fill in the blank with at least one of those three categories....

Problem: you the government, are and with almost everything but building highways and sometimes this too, are and have always been and will almost certainly always be the biggest generator of problems in any endevour yal choose to sink you teeth into(to your defense, the snout smells money or power so you gonna hate a shark cause it tastes blood in the water? no i sure do despise you for behaving like one :)

Reaction: i choose not to support your unjust and unproductive downright destructive policys and endless crusades, no you are not welcome and your solutions you are selling and not wanted nor needed, I choose not to buy Bob.

Solution: take a freakin' hike you fat bastids. my trust is firmly with the individual to make the correct decisions. turn the cliche into a reality by restricting what the government does, start by not asking them to 'fix' problems they created, less laws against consciousness of the individual in the name of health and safety. less worrying about what the guy is doing, stop trying to middle and control any and everyone around you. more freedom, less bs, less distortion, less division, less governmental parental supervision for crap such as this, be gone with the roadmap of having half society police the other half, less non sense, more sense held to be true and thus more likely to one day to lead to a better sense held common. the choice is mine, and yours too. choose wisely, i trust you will, my friend.

    3. How can anyone trust the addicted individual?
That is a problem that could be helped by enabling the addicts to sue those who got them addicted, and helping others fight for minimum wages, in cash not in species, then you would see legislators and politricks specialists showing their true colors, they even forbid non medical specialists like police officers from training in first aid and keep them from carrying drug overdose antidotes.

  13. 6:33- that is definitely a story id be interested to read, it seemed surreal reading about it back then and seems just as much so now days looking back on it. id imagine there to be many nuanced and subtle subtext to the overall narative that was given about that time and place. a creative writer with an ability to convey perspectives seldom told about that era could really bring sharpen the picture and deepen peoples perspective of the why things happend the way they did there in particular and to tie that into how that had shaped policy and attitudes resulting in where the country stands today on the issue. please do share if you decide to take up the admirable task of putting pen to paper re: that very relevent place time set and setting.

4:28 - i like what your saying dude i gotta admit i almost didnt read it all as it was a little wordy and i wasnt sure where you might go with it but it wasnt in caps lock and seems like your experience could be a benefit if and when conveyed in the right way to a receptive audience. hopefully we can see more talks taling place in the future, many ofnthe comments have really decended into the rubbish bin over the last couple years ive been reading here, not all but more than some closer to many safe to say alot more dont than those that do, give much thought to what they are able to vomit spew from their finger tips over a phone, hey the phones nowdays are sold as being 'smart', that sounds great and all but unfortunately it does just a taf north of ahff-uck all in trying to bring the average buyer of the smarter phone up to par with the device intellectually. fret not young man, its a nice thing to see people talking again in the comments section i for one just might read it. i was beginning to think it was just cartel fans raving and bashing on who was the "big bad muy verde muy mal not scared judas malverde the biggest baddest foulest samurai schooled in the shady dojo of the grand masta great gayte bate niggarachi ratcheta mera verga himself" of the week and how everyone else cowers in fear at the mer talk of masters odor. whos gonna win the next pain paintball for keeps match? why the comment section has that answer everytime haha dont trip gotta learn to laugh at it ya kno

5:09- uh oh..just saw this one and i gotta admit i still dont see how and where or why dude was able to get you all worked up? id ask you to point out the nerve it tickled but if thats too much id just say chill out dont mind if someone has a different perspective, share your own you both might just learn something new...or maybe he comes back with throwing more poop back at you then the primate brains are back in their comfort zones and yal can just have at it til one conceeds or maybe the other tires and goes to bed after as one of you put it not giving so much a dam what the other guy is doing if aint messin with you directly..

hey what do i know? i dont know much but im open to learn most defintely one of yal do know something i do not, if so, do share, your time spent writing eill be returned will my time spent reading.
