Mexico Freezes Bank Accounts of 153 People Linked to Six Drug Cartels in Michoacán

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat
Police officers patrol a road after other officers were ambushed by cartel gunmen in Michoacan, currently one of the most violent states in Mexico.
Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) froze the bank accounts of 153 cartel members and collaborators from six criminal groups based in Michoacan.

The UIF said that these groups are involved in money laundering and have used drug proceeds to fuel extortions, murders, and kidnappings throughout the state. Many of the individuals sanctioned are being investigated by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Mexican media outlet Milenio confirmed that in recent weeks the federal security cabinet headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has intensified talks with states like Michoacan to redouble their public security efforts.

In the case of Michoacán, the federal security cabinet's operation was carried out an investigation with the UIF and the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) to track down dozens of cartel members and collaborators.

Officials with knowledge of the investigations confirmed that the 153 people identified were part of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), the Knights Templar, La Familia Michoacana (LFM), Los Viagra, the United Cartels (CU), and an independent cell linked to the Beltrán Leyva Organization (BLO).

The names of the individuals or the banks they used were not released to the press.

Both federal and state authorities tracked the movements of these groups for weeks and detected connections to the Mexican financial system, which led the UIF to request the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) to order the immediate freezing of these accounts.

  1. For those of you that say FBI and DEA don't have jurisdiction in Mexico, of course they don't, but one does not need to step foot into Mexico. With DEA Intel look at how many cartel members accounts became frozen.

    1. Having no jurisdiction doesn't stop them from working there. It is widely known how DEA agents meet up with cartel leaders, they did with Chapo when he agreed to give info on the Golfos, and with Vicente right before he was captured. As a matter of fact, there was DEA agents dressed up as Mexican Military amongst the Marines that captured Chapo. Most say they aren't armed, if Mexican laws don't allow them to be armed, no problem. They basically control the SEMAR. Many elite Mexican Marine units like UNOPES are US trained, it's always the Marines who have DEA agents shoulder to shoulder with it's men, they're the ones who captured all the main bosses, and simply looking at the infantry guys from the Army compared to the ones from the Marines, there is a huge difference right away, they're more modern, better equipped and tactically more skillful.

    3. BLO is the only respected sinaloense group in ALL of Mexico. They are still in the game as independents and focus on moving work, not making fake corridos or running away from battles. Their leaders stand tall like Mochomo or shooting it out like botas blancas and not crying with boogers coming down their nose like chapo or pointing fingers in court like Vicente, Rey zambada, licensiado etc etc. They’ve been betrayed and snitched on by CDS but continue to work as men and not stoop down to their level.

    4. Ok Katharine to much narco blogs for you. You just left out in all the world if all that you said would had been true BLO would be as big as CDS or CJNG.

    5. 1249 well said. If botas blancas was in the spot as head of CDS Mexico would’ve been a better place. now mayos and chapo fan boys around Mexico think it’s okay to snitch because their leaders did so. BLO was one of the few groups that actually didn’t practice extortion and was loved all over the country from Sinaloa to Monterey to Acapulco . No one else in CDS had their charisma or political and business connects…. they say jealousy is a light sleeper…

    7. BLO is still a powerhouse in Mexico because of the large quantities of Drugs the take north up to the USA. A wise group that knew “wars” were to detrimental to any criminal outfit. It’s a good life when youre a Drug Organization that can enjoy the $ without bloodshed.

    9. 2:25 But definitely not as worse as Mexico. Yea there are gangs, but the difference is police here are strict and effective. To say crimes, u r taking small things which is usual in any country for tourists. I never heard beheading or video circulation at all, coz wise criminal gangs knows attracting lot of attention and heat hits money. Above all, malay gang has code of ethics, one gang will not enter into other gang territory like how mexican cartel does.

    10. 2:04 You are absolutely right, wars bring unnecessary attention that will disrupt revenue flow.

  4. UIF is a powerful tool to crackdown money laundering. the only issue I have with it is if/when it is misused against political rivals to the governing party. Mexico needs to be careful with this...

    1. So what’s your solution? Give more immunity to those rich assholes who ran the country for decades? Nope, the country wants justice. they must pay for what they have done. should’ve thought about “political persecution” before they stole money and took bribes. these people have nightmares about Santiago nieto

    2. 1:37 - My solution would be for the UIF to have more oversight from all parties...
