Elusive "Memo Fantasma," Guillermo León Acevedo Captured in Bogota, Colombia

"Socalj for Borderland Beat"

For 30 years the identity of Memo Fantasma or Sebastián Colmenares remained hidden until an exhaustive investigation discovered that he lived in Madrid and is really Guillermo Acevedo. (Photo: Infobae)
The Colombian authorities confirmed on the afternoon of this Friday, June 25, the capture in Bogotá of Guillermo León Acevedo, also known by the aliases of 'Memo Fantasma' or the 'Invisible Paramilitary'. He is a well-known former member of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, accused of coordinating the drug trafficking operations of that organization.

He was captured along with two other members of his family circle and one other person and is accused of the crimes of illicit enrichment, aggravated criminal conspiracy, and money laundering related to operations carried out in Bogotá, Antioquia. and Córdoba.

It is worth noting that Acevedo was only linked to the AUC between 1998 and 2006, but his participation in the world of Colombian drug trafficking would be much deeper, finding its roots towards the end of Pablo Escobar's Medellín Cartel, in the early 1990s, according to the InSight Crime report with which journalist Jeremy McDermott exposed him to the eyes of the world.

According to this, “Memo Fantasma” would begin its career around the year 1992 when Escobar was in La Catedral jail. At that time, he was a 21-year-old young man living in the United States, receiving cocaine shipments from the Medellín Cartel under the direction of Fabio Ochoa Vasco, who was one of the most important members of the Cartel as he controlled the distribution of the drug. drugs in the North American country, which at that time was six or eight tons per month.

After the collapse of the Medellín Cartel, and the birth of the Oficina de Envigado, Ochoa and Acevedo would go on to the payroll of Diego Murillo Bejarano, alias 'Don Berna', allowing him to make his first contacts with the Mexican cartels and learn about the business of the international drug trafficking. That same chain of events, which was also able to initiate its own operation between Mexico and the United States, and even come into contact with key allies of 'Don Berna', the Castaño brothers, who would later form the AUC, who over the years began to see how their financing was increasingly dependent on the drug trafficking business.

The process of demobilization of these self-defense groups during the government of Álvaro Uribe Vélez, revealed the names of several drug traffickers who until then had been operating in hiding. Such was the case of Don Berna, who took advantage of the Santa Fe de Ralito peace process to sneak into the paramilitary structure and thus obtain the benefits of having signed the peace; and Sebastián Colmenares, an alias that for years remained without a proper name for the Colombian authorities.

This person, according to different sources, such as Peter Vincent, a member of the United States Department of Justice, was in charge of managing the drug trafficking operations of the Bloque Central Bolívar of the AUC but disappeared from all radars once the Ralito process was completed. The mystery dissipated in 2015, when the journalist Ana María Cristancho managed to confirm that Colmenares was, in effect, 'Memo Fantasma'.

The person who denounced him that year was José Germán Sena Pico, alias 'Nico', before the Justice and Peace courts. He pointed out that 'Memo Fantasma' was the second person after 'Macaco' in the Central Bolívar Bloc. "The name, because I was with him, I had to be with him as a human courier, I was with him from the hand, his name is Guillermo Camacho”, stated 'Nico' before the judge who questioned him, assuring that that name did not exist in any database. 'Nico' replied: "Well, his badge was always 'Sebastián Colmenares' or 'Memo Fantasma'.

Later, it was another woman identified by InSight Crime as 'Zara', who was finally able to identify the mysterious criminal with his real name Guillermo León Acevedo Giraldo, who did appear in Colombian databases as a shareholder of the Bogotá-based company Inversiones ACEM SA. Using ACEM SA as a front, 'Memo' began to make a name for himself in the real estate business, even becoming a partner in Hitos Urbanos, the company of the current vice president of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez and her husband Álvaro Rincón.

Regarding this fact, which occurred in 2006, the Vice President said that at that time Guillermo Acevedo had a judicial background scan carried out and absolutely nothing appeared to indicate any criminal activity. She has also said that she does not know that character and her own husband collaborated with the investigation that exposed the name of the drug ghost.

After being caught eating in a restaurant in the Colombian capital, which allowed many of his former associates in prison to identify him, it was learned of Acevedo's life in Madrid, Spain, where he established companies and has properties in luxurious sectors of the city, without being associated with any of the crimes of his past. That is, until this June 25, when the Colombian authorities were finally able to apprehend him.

    2. Alvaro Uribe Velez, used to brand some of his properties and creations with names linked to his "persona" like Autodefensas Unidas, but he also owned FARC and ELN operatives, and Memo Fantasma looks like one of them, prolly given up by convicted criminal Alvaro Uribe Velez, who was at a time employed by Pablo Escobar, AU also created the Falsos Positivos to the murder and depopulate. But he still is one dandy idol of the US who also helped transplant the colombianization of War ON drugs to Mèxico and gave FECAL and garcia Luna medals, diplomas and certificates for their "courage" along with spain...

  9. Damn finally they cought him i bet it was pressure from the usa after he was put on tv and on news lately. Now for all you out there that never heard of this guy this man is the most powerfull drug lord in the world. Its not menchita its not MZ it was never el chapo. This man been drug dealing since the days of his boss Pablo Escobar. He might of worked for the Galeano wing of the medelling cartel. He either stole a big shipment or he was left with a big shipment of coke when Escobar was killed and no one came to ask for it he moved it thru mexico which by the way the first time the name memo fantasma was heard by usa authorities was a cartel snitch in mexico and he became his own boss later on he became one of the top bosses of the acu along with Macaco his partner and enforcer. Also don Berna and Sevillano and Mancuso and at least one of the Castaño Gil brothers and the rest of the acu bosses which was basically the medelling cartel 2.0. When the acu and colombian goverment had the ralito meeting which some people wld argue is the meeting of most powerful cartel bosses ever this guy didnt show up and sign the the accords with an alias. And when the colombian goverment extradited don Berna, Mancuso, Sevillano and Macaco after the colombian president had enough of their shit. This guy was left. Unlike the mexicans whom is like the want to be put in most wanted lists with their corridos or narco ballads in colombia drug lords are the opposite theyre called the invisibles. The good picture at the top he was recorded by bad luck while lunching at a restaurant in colombia and some sort of "reality show" was filmed in the same restaurant. He was tracked down by a man in a show on national geography channel to spain where he was living. The show is called drug lords the new generation if you have streaming service that shows national geographic channel programming check it out they also have the biography of don berna and don lucho boss of the bogota cartel or cartel del dorado whom was cought extradited around 2011 and after making some payments to usa and colombian goverment is already out.

    6. Hes was the most powerfull in terms of money and the most powerfull in the fact that he has basically a militia because the acu kept their best men armed even after ralito to protect their territories and routes and hes the most powerfull man in the sence of valume he sold coke not just to the mexican cartels he supplied europe and the east as well as the caribbean and if you watch the national geographic channel show you wld get an understanding of how the colombian goverment or people high up in their government protected him until now. Hes also been making money since the early 90s may be before he worked for Escobar. This guy got more money stashed than all mexicos cartel bosses together. Dont make ignorant comments or get butt hurt because of it its just facts. And dont make it a colombians vs mexicans thing either all though theres always been rummors that some coke grows in mexico all mexican cartela have to buy from colombia and at the end of the day all this men are scumbags that killed or had people killed in numbers that are crazy by civilized standards. This guy makes mencha look like dime bag dealer.

    7. And to all mencha the rat cheerleaders mencho wasnt ecen the most powerfull man or the richest man in his cartel el cuini was the richest man assciated with mencho and mencho set him up to get cought like he did erick valencia the man who helped him take over what was nacho coronels and the valencias and like he did nacho coronels son. Nacho coronel betrayed the valencias so he didnt have to end up working for them because thats the schooling they have in mexico 0 fucking loyalty anymore thats how you end up with so many so called cartels. Although theres only 2 big cartels left cds and jaliscas and the fragmented but stil there cdg.

4:38 the billions invested by the US in their war ON drugs in Mèxico has resulted in the fragmentation of crime and murdering associated with colombianizing Mèxico, situation that was prognosticated early on before the war on drugs started by people like Pope Francisco who unlike you was not born yesterday...

    1. He was. Nd as long as he still in colombia he can still do business from prison. It aint like they have super max prisons over there. And Mz aint as powerfull anymore the cds has lost entire big factions from arrests and internal war. And lets face it jaliscas have taken some of their territories and weed which is the bread and butter of mexican cartels have taken a cut as more usa states legalize or decriminalize it Even though american weed is incredibly overprized cus americans are greedy as fuck they want to sell some shit that is not real hydro for 20 bucks a gram especially if buy in weed shops.

This guys are so big that sometimes when they get bisted the price of coke rises like it did between 2009 to 2011 when the prise of coke rose from 14 a key to 19 here by the border where i live. Around when the acu and the el dorado cartel were bosses were busted.

Mexican Carlos Slim Helu was for a while the world's richest man, but he stole it through dirty dealings with salinas de gortari after a long life making money mexican style, because his brother DFS commander Julian Slim Helu found a lot of drug traffickers there and after...if he keeps coming into the US he could get arrested like Cienpedos and his business partner and puppet genarco garcia luna who lived the grand life as an american on the US of A.
--Mexican narcos have been the illiterate puppets of US rogue agents covered up by their higher ups in US government behind the backs of the americans, nothing to brag about.
