US Prosecutors in Genaro García Luna Drug Case Will Use Google Earth Images, Prison Video Recordings as Evidence

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat

US authorities announced on Tuesday that among the evidences against Genaro Garcia Luna, former Mexican Secretary of Public Security accused of drug trafficking, are video recordings of him with another inmate in New York and Google Earth images.

Prosecutors also plan to use financial documents and property records from Mexico, Colombia, Barbados, and Panama to frame him of organized crime involvement.

García Luna was Secretary of Public Security from 2006 to 2012, during the presidency of Felipe Calderon. He left Mexico at the end of Calderon's presidency and moved to Miami, where he established permanent residency. In 2018, he filed for US citizenship. However, he was arrested in Texas in December 2019 after being accused by federal authorities in New York of supporting the Sinaloa Cartel.

Investigators say he provided protection to the cartel and received millions of dollars from Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, once considered Mexico's most-wanted drug lord.

As reported by Borderland Beat, Garcia Luna hid more than US$50 million dollars in tax havens through a network of companies. The places he laundered money included the US, Mexico, Barbados, Hong Kong, Israel, Latvia, Panama, the UK, Cyprus and Curaçao.

Garcia Luna's next hearing is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on 23 June 2021 in New York.

  1. The fact that he moved to the USA immediately after his post under Calderon says a lot. It says he was terrified without the protection of the Mexican military. I bet he pissed off every other cartel except Sinaloa because of his support.

    1. What was he thinking, though? That he would never get caught? I'm surprised some of these narcos go into hiding in the US or do connect flights in the US, where you never know if there's a sealed indictment waiting to catch you. If I were even a mid-tier criminal in a cartel I would not step on the US in my entire life.

    2. Didn’t Calderon do that also. Taking a teaching job at Harvard or some shit. Which is interesting considering the Ivy League history with drug trafficking

    3. 9:29 you know why? These corrupt Mexican politicians are in cahoots with both democrats and republicans. It wasn’t until two presidents that weren’t part of the machine won that Luna finally got what was coming to him. Under a bush, obama etc he would not have been prosecuted as a couple favors would have been called in at the White House. Trump owed them nothing

    3. Botas Blancas chased genarco and his death squad, genarco stopped and went to talk with Arturo Beltran Leyva who asked if he was going to deliver on deals, or he would get caught again...
I don't need to tell you genarco, EPN and FECAL paid a few visits to the BLO until they used the Marinas to stick it to El Barbas for good.

    5. Governor of Estado de Mexico enrique peña nieto and genarco used to park their choppers in Arturo Beltran Leyva's hangars in the Toluca Airport, nothing holy in their relationship.

    6. 3:12 Arturo DID get to him he just chose to try to flip him to BLO instead of finishing him off on the spot. Looking back that was probably one of the most decisive moments in the war. Arturo kills him Mayo and Chapo lose a lot of government influence and the BLO raids stop

    7. Oh, he had him in his pocket big time. Genaro probably asked for protection from chapo after the split. Your right he should have killed him.

  3. Can't believe all details of this trial will be allowed to be made public. Either there will be some late stage plea deal - thereby avoiding that ANY details are published - or the case will be dropped. Both options may dilutional, but I can't believe they will allow that the guy second in-charge off launching the WoD at the beheast of our gov will be allowed to spill the beans.

In the end I believe there will be some bullshit behind-the-doors settlement just like with Cienfuegos and Luna will pretty much walk.

    I hope I'm wrong though

  4. Cartels r amazing, they have so much $$$$$ and they still caught. If the U.S. ever decide to stop drugs in Mexico, the Cartel would be gone in 6 months. Even the U.S. politicians are taking bribes from the Mexican cartel.

    1. 10:09 I regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen events transpiring in Mexico, the Cartels will continue to conquer towns, cities. Yes even if the flow of drugs was stopped like you mentioned. They would resort to other crimes which they already do as we speak... kidnapping for ransom, fuel theft, land and home theft, extortion, train robberies, sex trafficking now do you catch my drift.

    2. @11:23
Last time I checked, all of the above crimes stipulated are transpiring now.
The wealth of drug trafficking & its associates will never cease.

  6. This guy worked directly under Mexican President Felipe Calderon that was invited to teach at Harvard University here in the U.S.
Why was this President invited to teach at Harvard while this guy is on trial here kn the states?
Why isn't the former President on trial also?

    1. Because there is no proof Calderon was involved with cartels. As simple as that.

    5. 11:11 remeber when people claim a cell only from a particular cartel commits crimes against certain people but not the entire cartel?
People are quick to point out the leaders of the cartel know exactly what their subjects do or don't do.
This guy was a subject of Calderon.
Calderon really has no idea what his subordinate is doing?

    7. 9:18 FECAL was the puppet of veteran corrupt gangbanger policuico garcia luna, he had been in the police for years, a madrina and young gofer for the most corrupt cuicos in his youth while FECAL was a new president looking for shit to steal.
His american diplomas just led him to wholesale corruption programmed on the US institution of puppetry.
