9 Bodies Abandoned Inside Truck in Zitácuaro, Michoacán

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

In Zitacuaro city’s Ignacio Zaragoza neighborhood, Michoacán, residents discovered a cargo truck with 9 dead bodies on May 17 2021. A sign left in the truck from La Familia Michoacana claims responsibility.

The state Attorney General’s office (FGE) reports that local residents notified a patrol officer of the discovery Monday afternoon. The patrol officer confirmed the report and cordoned off the area from the public. A Specialized Crime Scene Unit (UECS) was dispatched to Benedicto López Sur street, between the Héctor Terán and Artillería Poniente roads. The bodies were piled in the back of a Nissan cargo truck with rail framing.

The bodies belonged to 8 men and 1 woman, all reported to have gunshot wounds. The bodies were transferred to the morgue for autopsy after the scene was processed for evidence. So far none of the victims have been officially identified. A sign was left alongside the bodies in which La Familia Michoacana claimed responsibility. Further details on the message of this sign are not currently available but may emerge in the coming days.

El Universal reports that they have access to an intelligence report which indicates the La Familia Michoacana lieutenant in charge of the Zitácuaro region is Medardo Hernández Vera, alias "El Mantecas”, "Lalo Mantecas" or “El 100".

The report says El Mantecas has been a member of La Familia Michoacana since at least 2013. He is currently in charge of the growing and harvesting of drugs in the mountains of Nanchititla, State of Mexico in addition to being a regional boss in Zitácuaro, Michoacán and regions in Guerrero.

He sometimes uses the aliases Eduardo Hernandez Uribe and/or Antonio Sanchez N. Criminal associates include Johnny Hurtado Olascoaga “El Pez” and Jose Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga "La Fresa". His main rival is considered to be Jalisco Cartel - New Generation (CJNG).

El Mantecas has also infamously claimed responsibility for an incident last year on May 23, 2020 in which 12 dead bodies were left on Huetamo-Ciudad Altamirano federal highway. Similarly, the dead bodies were left in the bed of an abandoned truck. El Mantecas reportedly left a sign making clear he was the one behind the killings.

  1. What went wrong, faces of the cartels are usually covered. Is there favoritism from the newspaper?

    1. I believe the government does not cover faces of suspects when there is a bounty issued and is made public. I've seen that a few times, but not entirely sure.
