Guadalajara, Jalisco: Shootout in Residential Neighborhood Leaves in 4 Dead and Over 30 Detainees

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat

Residents from La Chalapita neighborhood told reporters that they never suspected there was criminal activitity inside the house. It was surprising to them when they learned that in the two-story house there were over 30 people inside.

A clash between police officers and members of a cell of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) on Monday in Guadalajara, Jalisco, left four dead. In addition, over 30 people were arrested and seven who were kidnapped by the cartel were rescued.

The shootout started after an anonymous person called the police and notified them of suspicious activity at a property in La Chapalita, a neighborhood in Guadalajara. When security forces arrived at the house in question to investigate, a woman came out to answer the door. She soon realized that they were police officers and quickly closed the door.

Police officers noticed that several people were escaping through the yard's back wall and through the property's roof. Several of them then tried to struggle with one of the officers and two suspects were shot dead.

A gunfight broke out and extended to other parts of the neighborhood. So far, the authorities are certain that the house was used as a safe house by the CJNG. Inside the property, authorities found a dead person and several firearms. Six more people who were in captivity by the CJNG were rescued.

"The abductees are collaborating with the Public Ministry Department. They told us that they had been kidnapped for about a week", state prosecutor Gerardo Solís Gómez told reporters.

Solis Gomez also specified that of the 33 people apprehended, 27 are men and the rest women. Two of the detainees were minors. Of the total of those arrested, 20 are originally from Jalisco and the others come from Nayarit, the State of Mexico, Sinaloa, Mexico City, Michoacán, and Zacatecas.

It is expected that later the Jalisco Prosecutor's Office will issue more updates on the event. Local media reports say that least two other homes were secured.

The video above includes a clip of the detainees in custody at the property and another clip of the shootout in the neighborhood.

Mug shot of the detainees; the two without mug shots were minors and their pictures were not released, per Mexican federal law.
