Nearly 600 Percent Drop in Cartel Property Seizures In Current Presidency

"MX" for Borderland Beat

Some of the narco-properties seized are auctioned by Mexico's Institute to Return Stolen Goods to the People (INDEP).

The Mexican federal government has abandoned the strategy of seizing real estate property from drug cartels. According to official figures, the drop is nearly 600 percent.

The administration of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) is no longer seizing mansions, ranches, luxury apartments, safe houses, and warehouses at the rate of his predecessors: Vicente Fox Quesada (2000–2006), Felipe Calderón Hinojosa (2006–2012) and Enrique Peña Nieto (2012–2018).

Between 2019 and 2020, Mexico's Attorney General's Office (FGR) seized only 27 cartel properties (19 in the first year and 8 in the second). In contrast, during the first two years of the Fox administration, 208 properties were seized (47 in 2001 and 161 in 2002).

Meanwhile, at the start of the Calderon administration, the FGR secured 53 properties in 2007 and 88 in 2008, totaling 141. In the government of Peña Nieto, the FGR seized 134 properties in two years; 93 in 2013 and 41 in 2014.

During the first two years of the Fox, Calderón and Peña Nieto governments, an average of 161 properties were seized. If compared to AMLO's numbers, the figure marks a 596 percent drop.

In the past, these cartel seizures garnered national headlines and were a source of accomplishment for federal authorities.

Constructions such as the palace that Amado Carrillo Fuentes built in Hermosillo, Sonora; the mansion with seven pools that José Antonio Yepez Ortiz (El Marro), had in Celaya, Guanajuato; the residence of Zhenli Ye Gon, in Lomas de Chapultepec, in Mexico City; the ranch with more than 200 animals that Jesus 'El Rey' Zambada owned near Toluca, State of Mexico; or the 475-square-meter cabin that Edgar Valdez Villareal (La Barbie) had in La Marquesa, State of Mexico, have ceased to be in the center of attention of the Mexican government.

Milenio reporters interviewed a real estate lawyer who has handled cartel property seizure cases in the past. The lawyer (whose identity and professional trajectory were fully verified by Milenio but were kept in reserve for security reasons) described these properties as mansions whose measurements range between 300 and 400 square meters.

Inside, he detailed, there are numerous bedrooms that are larger than the average Mexican apartment. They are equipped with the highest quality furniture and bathrooms that look like full bedrooms. He also pointed out that most of the properties have large gardens, swimming pools and parking space for at least five vehicles.

Once these properties are seized, the government can try to sell or auction them but most of the times they are abandoned.

    2. Raul salinas de gortari got all "his properties and money" back, and past narco-presidentes were just robbing and stealing from their own former partners and supporters, but AMLO IS RECOVERING WHAT THOSE FORMER PRESIDENTS and their associates STOLE, and that is worth A LOT MORE than a few narco properties

  2. Why would this surprise anyone. AMLO has displayed a sweet spot for these individuals in the past.
Mexico has become a haven for political / associations.

  3. AMLO rather give them hugs instead of taking their properties. Maybe he was paid off or knows a big check is waiting for him once he’s out

At least he won’t have to leave the country forever like Calderon or Pena Nieto lol

    1. It’s a political post. With the elections coming up, some BB “journalists” can’t help but to “unknowingly” spread propaganda and root root for their preferred political spectrum. Most are right wing gabacho wannabes

    2. 1:54 - This was published by Milenio, the most read media outlet in Mexico. We translated the source and included it at the bottom to anyone who wants to consult it.

    4. Milenio is no different than Fox or CNN. They have an agenda and give the people half truths. I find this article interesting considering that early in AMLO's presidential term he was priding himself in taking Narco properties and converting them into trade schools and universities. I agree with 1:54 in that it is election season and to highlight past presidents like they were any better and throw shade on the current president is a little suspicious. I would definitely take this as a grain of salt.

    5. 7:37 that’s every media outlet bro. There is always some sort of bias or agenda. Let me guess ... You wanted “Proceso” magazine instead? Get out of here... BB is here to provide you the info as reported by the Mexican press or sources. Don’t shoot the messenger. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Lol

    6. @9:31 Nobody's Taki g shots at the messenger and I wasn't expecting any better from processo. Like I mentioned, they're no different from CNN or FOX. With that being said, I usually get my information from AMLO's social media and fact check. FYI AMLO is on his way to establishing 250 new military barracks throughout Mexico by the end of the year but rarely does the mexican media report on that.

    7. 3:42 CNN is a disgusting real news organization called "FAKE" by the former crook in chief who loves FAWX news and its crooked chayotero reporters.
Anything tromp does not like is "fake and disgusting", grow up.

  7. No one buys the properties they just sit there and rot so what's the point. The cars, jewelry, etc do sale at the auctions

  8. The UIF has frozen lots of bank accounts under AMLO... yet don’t get to properties. I wonder if the threshold for seizing properties has changed, or maybe AMLO for whatever reason doesn’t want to seize these... idk who would even by an ex-narco home. Too dangerous if you ask me. What’s stops them from taking it again or killing you one day? Fuck that.
