DEA warns of meth pills that resemble candy being distributed on Northeast Ohio streets

Chivis Martinez TY GUS Source

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is warning Northeast Ohioans about illegal methamphetamine pills being distributed on our streets.

The distribution and use of methamphetamine (meth) is on the rise across the nation, a DEA source told FOX 8 Monday. Mexican drug trafficking organizations have become the primary manufacturers and distributors of meth in the US.

Those organizations make the drugs in Mexico and then bring them into the US and they are distributed across the country, including in Northeast Ohio.

However, the meth industry has been evolving. In addition to distributing the drug in powder or crystal form, the DEA has now seen an increase of meth pills being sold in Northeast Ohio.

Officials believe this is in part because meth is easier to mail and get across the US-Mexico border when in pill form.

The pills are small, colorful and often resemble candy.

The DEA says citizens, especially parents as these pills can look appealing to children, need to be alert. They should check all candy and pills before consumption.

Ohioans should look for stamped pharmaceutical codes on all pills. However, the DEA warns that code markings may not be enough to identify counterfeit pills as “makers have gotten more sophisticated,” adding that it can be hard to distinguish between a pharmaceutical and a homemade pill with the naked eye.

The DEA says the biggest clue for identifying illegal drugs is the packaging. Pharmaceutical companies have certain labeling and packaging requirements they must apply to every bottle, vial or other consumer container intended to hold drugs. Meth pills will most likely not be found in that type of packaging.

  2. Ohio has been in play for awhile already but those northeastern states is gonna be washed in meth.

The folks can't say they weren't warned, many just weren't listening.
While they watched 'breaking bad' reality was moving outside their TV's. Certain DTO's were making plans and pushing in.
The homeless become their eyes and ears, colonized twitchers and muttering tweakers who will protect their masters for a couple of puffs of fakelove.
The narcojuniors will drive by in nice SUV's on their way to college, laughing at the dumb trash getting high on the shit. Even though it pays for their plastic home, expensive vacations, and their girls plastic surgery, there will be something missing. I call it heart and soul.

    1. Nobody puts a gun to the head of a drug user in the vast majority of cases. Let them pay the price for their stupidity if they overdose and such.

    8. 9:32 I've heard of a few kids getting sick after taking these pills as candy but never addicted. Why? Because ypu don't buy them at a grocery store like regular candy first of all and second they were taken by accident meaning that the will to using them is taken away hence their addiction to these are almost completely nill in the vast majority of cases.
They have also been around decades so most any idiot taking these is doing so intentionally. Grow up!

    9. 3:38 so then why should we NOT allow cartels to sell drugs in this country then?
I mean if everybody has the potential to use them and be successful still why are they illegal?

So some poor kids parent is going to leave these laying around for the kid to just happen across a bag of what the child thinks is candy. Kid eats some then dies from overdose all the while thinking it was just candy
That’s the problem with looking like candy

  4. They're probably being sold as "ecstasy" (MDMA) and the kidz these days can't tell the difference. MDMA is more difficult/expensive to make and is more costly per dose than meth. So presto! Make meth into pills and brandify it for the EDM generation. Have you seen Molly? LOL

    1. theres been an uprise in meth based "extacy" pills here among the festival scene. in fact dealers are so blatant about it that they advertise them as "speedy" vs. "smacky", and some consumers prefer them like that. I wish narcos made real extacy lol.

    2. It's been like that since before narcos got into the pill business... Hell, there are pills made up of so many different substances that there's a site that tests them and tells you what they contain, some even contain dewormers,, WTF... But they are in the molly business too, it makes its way up from Guadalajara where most ecstacy pills come from in Mexico. There's even green and purple molly now a days

  8. In Quebec Canada, these pills have existed since the mid 90’s. They were first introduced as peaches and strawberries because of their respective colors. They also resembled Chews gum. They were sold at raves as “speed pills” but they were full of crystal which kept you partying all night.
In the mid 2000‘s the ICE. pills became big, which were the same thing. Same thing, new look ,repeat...
