Caborca and the Paez Family

By Buggs for Borderland Beat

The region of the Heroica Caborca was founded in 1980 made up of 341 towns within its territory, the most important being La Y Griega, El Diamante, El Coyote, Desemboque, Puertos lobos and San Francisquito. It is part of the great sonora desert, touching the border line to the south and southeast with the municipality of Pitiquito, to the east with the municipality of Altar and to the northwest with the municipality of Puerto Peñasco, along with the municipality of General Plutarco Elías Calles. To the extreme northeast it borders with the United States, particularly the Pima County of the state of Arizona.

Within the city, illegal activities are prominent such as drug trafficking and smuggling of undocumented immigrants. Well-known personalities in the Mexican drug trafficking derive from these illicit activities, one of them the renowned Rafael Caro Quintero and his brother Miguel Ángel Caro Quintero who have made Caborca their base to organize and develop all the activities related to drug trafficking.

Warning! Extreme Graphic images of below
Rafael Caro Quintero
Rafael was once part of the famous Guadalajara cartel related to the famous members such as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, Miguel Salcido Beltrán “El Cochiloco” and Joaquín Archivaldo Loera “El Chapo” Guzmán. The other cartel known as Cartel de Sonora had it's best years between the 70's, 80's and 90's. Both brothers were arrested, Miguel Ángel is free man with nothing pending yet while Rafael is still wanted by the Mexican government on a extradition warrant by the United States government.

Such was the immense growth of the Caro Quintero family, that they created networks, forged relationships with other plaza bosses and brought in family to help direct operations, one being the Paez Soto family. Operation were led by Pedro Paez Soto, cousin of the famous Lamberto Quintero Payan and uncle of Rafael Caro Quintero. Pedro Paez Soto was executed in 1975 at the Culiacan airport, he died in the violent feud between the Quintero Payan families and the Otañez Lafarga family.

Miguel Ángel
Caro Quintero
The city first continued under the control of Rafael Caro Quintero in the 80s and 90s up until his arrest. The younger brother Miguel Ángel Caro Quintero took over the organization creating the Sonora Cartel and its base in Caborca. Miguel Ángel was arrested in December 2001 and extradited to the United States.

Control of the city fell to a relative and trusted man of Miguel Ángel Caro Quintero, his name, Octavio Paez Soto, who was executed on April 16, 2004 by his nephew Luis Fernando Sanchez Paez aka "L7" in the house of Octavio's sister Doña Tula. Octavio Paez sustained at least 15 gunshots from a 9mm to his body from L7. During the war waged by these capos the city experienced violent confrontations in the Plaza de Caborca that included; shootings, abductions and searches by authorities that seized an incredible number of weapons.

After the death of Octavio Paez Soto control of Caborca fell to his brother Ignacio Paez Soto aka "El Nachillo" or "C1." For years he fought the plaza of Caborca against his nephew Luis (Luisillo) Fernando Sanchez Paez L7, the Nachillo Paez people managed to keep the L7 people at bay.

The searches and arrests related to Luis Fernando Sanchez Paez led to him retreating to Sinaloa. This was a grave mistake since the Paez Soto family already had a tight relationship with Chapo Guzman, Mayo Zambada and the Beltran Leyva brothers who together hunted for El L7. L7 was eventually executed with two companions in the city of Culiacan on September 6, 2009 while travelling in a gray Jetta.

The vehicle of Luisillo Páez L7
El Nachillo Páez kept control of the la plaza of Caborca, all under the direction of Ismael El Mayo Zambada and Manuel Beltrán “El Nini Beltrán”.

The criminal structure headed by Ignacio Páez Soto included the criminal groups known as "Los Paleteros" and "Los Sabori," in charge of collecting fees from all taxi drivers and smugglers of undocumented immigrants who wanted to pass through the El Sásabe area, municipality from Sáric.

That same year of the death of Luis Fernando Sánchez Páez, Ignacio Páez Soto was arrested on September 15 and released after a large bribe to the federal forces. Ignacio Páez Soto was again arrested on November 7, 2013 aboard an armored Jeep Grand Cherokee near the town of Piquito along with his escorts identified as Reynaldo Alejandro del Río López, alias "El Tongo," and Francisco Ricardo Bermúdez Méndez, alias "El Talibán." Today Ignacio Paez Soto is serving a 20 year sentence and has been identified as a main operator for Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera and Ismael El Mayo Zambada.
Ignacio Paez Soto "El Nachillo" or "C1"
The Paez family that has been marked by death that was derived from the dispute over the aforementioned territories, has caused a wave of executions, causing several casualties between both "criminal organizations" of "Mayo Zambada" and the Beltrán Leyva, which has forced "Los Páez" to work indiscriminately for both groups. This led to the execution of Luis Octavio Páez Terrazas, Giovanni Páez and Leonel Páez Benítez "El Gavilán," among other leaders of the structure.

Giovanni Páez was killed after a confrontation between adversary groups in Altar, Sonora on April 21, 2009.

Leonel Páez Benítez “El Gavilán” was executed on July 13, 2009 after several unsuccessful attempts to maintain total control in the agricultural coast of Caborca by a commando of sicarios who were keeping rival authorities and drug trafficking groups in check.

El Gavilan was known to be behind the death of the workers of Oomapas due to an argument during a soccer match. Victor Manuel Flores Quijada and Francisco Lopez Valdez were killed. Francisco died at the scene while Victor Manuel was chased down in a car and was riddled with bullets after being caught.

On June 4, 2009 the structure of the Paez was threatened. A white Yukon truck with 11 mutilated bodies and a narcomanta addressed to Octavio Paez's lieutenants and colleagues was found on the Caborca, Sonoyta federal highway that possibly had been abducted in Y Griega.

This massacre was attributed to an internal war of the Sinaloa Cartel, the person responsible was Adelmo Nieblas "El G3" plaza boss in Sonoyta for El Chapo Guzman.

People associated to the Paez clan:

Manuel Beltran Quintero "El Nini," arrested in 2014 by federal forces.

Raul Beltran Quintero "El 9," arrested on March 23, 2016

Adolfo Jauregui Mesa "El Paletero," leader of Los Paleteros, executed on February 2, 2013.

Óscar de la Rocha Rivera "El Chapo de la Rocha," was a man close to Rafael Caro Quintero was arrested on February 23, 2015. .

Raul Sabori Cisneros "El Negro," arrested on April 13, 2011.

Jose Rodrigo Paez Quintero "El R," nephew of Rafael Caro Quintero.

Currently a relative related to the Paez family, with the support of Rafael Caro Quintero, is fighting for the plaza of Caborca, Altar and the coast of Caborca, led by Rodrigo Paez and Oscar de la Rocha against La Gente Nueva del Cazador and Gente Nueva del Ruma, they are loyal to Los Paleteros who were led by Ignacio Paez Soto. They are now allied with the Gente Nueva Salazar after the arrest of their leader Nachillo Paez.

The confrontations over the trafficking and sale of drugs such as the well-known crystal have in check farm communities of Caborca, that have resulted in the following confrontations:

December 19, 2019: confrontation in the Y Griega, two dead and one wounded, several abandoned cars.

April 19, 2020: farming community of morelos, municipality of Caborca, 4 dead, 3 wounded.

April 30, 2020: Puerto Lobos, shooting and fire of shops and houses.

This is the result in the intense reorganization within the structure, internal disputes and changes of alliances, some working for Joaquin Guzman Loera and some for Mayo Zambada. This was indicative of the advances from the Beltran Leyva brothers and the Caro Quintero clan. They have allowed the Paez family remain currently under control, the last name of Paez in Caborca is synonymous with power and death.

Caborca joins the wave of violence that keeps the state of Sonora as a hot zone, the fight for plazas in Sonora by the Sinaloa Cartel against other rival groups supported by cartels such as Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, groups allied with of Caro Quintero, the Beltran Leyva under the command of El Chapo Isidro and the Juarez Cartel with their armed wing of la línea disputed the plazas of sonora.

Heroica Caborca remains one of the most influential and powerful plazas, the history of drug trafficking has defined the city.

Correct. Raul Enrique Parra, got chucked out of an airplane wrapped in an American flag. And I will tell you, that Enrique Parra probably had one of the largest marijuana smuggling operations in the south. And yes, they were beltrones. There were some facts that were said in a previous article that Buggs wrote there were not exactly correct. After the split with the Sinaloa Federation, Arturo Beltran Leyva aligned himself with a lot of different people even golfos. But when M100 sock retribution for the murder of his family, all of these people paid a huge price. Enrique Parra felt the brunt of it. Wiped out his whole family almost. Los numeros, is no more.

    7. Los números were reduced/wiped out before BLO split off from CDS and Arturo is the one that took them out, it was his order that caused their downfall. Listening to Chapo without realizing that it would reduce his fighting power when the betrayal came

You have to remember, el chapo struck a deal with the bosses of that area (Paredes Salizar) before he asked Arturo Beltran anyting. They already knew who the new Power structure was going to be, before Arturo split from the Federation. If you read the other article that Chivis posted about Arturo Beltran kidnapping Genaro Luna, that sealed his fate. Chapo had a deal with the government, no different than Caro Quintero does right now. Let's be real about a few things, Caro Quintero would not even be out of prison, he would be extradited to the United States, if there wasn't a deal struck with him, prior to him being released. That was no accident. That doesn't mean he's going to succeed in taking over the whole enchilada. Everything was about dirty deals. You have to remember also, did it was an Arturo Beltran people that through Enrique Para out of that plane. M100 make sure he flew out of that plane without a parachute. This was in retaliation for the murder of the Paredes Family, who Chapo had to deal with to run that area. They are The Gatekeepers. And they are all very powerful. You will see the people of Sonora picking their battles. And you will see them put up one hell of a fight. Most of the serious battles you ever saw happen during Chapo's Reign of Power, those battles were helped waged by the Mexican Government. Genaro Luna, sealed Arturo's fate.

    9. When EPN became president, CDS lost the overt backing of corrupt Mexican officials and the ABC's had their influence/manipulation reduced. Prior to this changing of administrations it was becoming very apparent that Chapo/Mayo were turning in their own people and the supreme cartel they and the governments were trying to establish despite all the bloodshed simply wasn't going to materialize.
Not them or the ABC's imagined that the old timer was going to be released, of course it's a dirty deal, just like the 2 prior administration's could never capture Chapo. So is Mexico going to have another decades long war while the top players are alive and free?
IDK where I read that a Beltran brother was opposed to the killing of RaulEnriquezParra, to top it off he was a compadre. Beltranes had a good part of Sonora sowed up and after this event their influence was reduced. They just couldn't imagine the betrayal that was going to happen because of government agreements, neither could LFM or M3/Metros.
Not with all the money they made can they bring back deceased, killed or incarcerated for life individuals and family members. Cartel De las Traiciones

  5. Good article. This is the real battle going on behind the scenes. The biggest problem you have, is although Caro Quintero has been around for a long time, so has Mayo Z. And miles and bought it has never been arrested, unlike the Quintero family. Now I know that Mayo's sons are a bunch of rats, but there is a lot of rats inside the container organization as well. Now huge battle went on years ago, when there was a split between the Beltran Leyva's, and Chapo and Mayo. And now I'm sure the Caro Quintero wants to lay down the law. But the war he is waging, is going to cost him dearly. I'm not even going to go into the Enrique Camarena story, because of all the facts that went on behind the scenes. But without serious assistance from the government, trying to take Mayo and Chapo's kids out of the mix, not to mention all of the Plaza's and the deep-rooted families that are there, actually switching sides, or giving up control of their area. This is definitely going to become an issue. But I will make an educated guess, that Los Salazar, and Paez Soto, and the Paredes, we'll still be standing when all this is over. I'm sure the government is dreading War down there in Sonora.

However, Chapo Isidro is very smart. And 4 years I waited for the Resurgence of the Beltran Leyva people. There are a lot of people right there that would love to get some retribution. And as everybody has seen, Chapo Isidro has skated through all of this almost unscaved. We will see how all this plays out in the end run. El mencho is pretty hot. These alignments from behind the scenes are going to cause one hell of a lot of trouble. And the funny thing is, you never hear anything about El Azul in his people. (I WONDER WHY?) It's about to get really interesting.

    1. @ABK To take the whole state, yes it would be extremely difficult, but not impossible. Western Sonora is very achievable if not already under their control and these fights are a result of that consolidation. The problem in CLN probably had that person, who was no longer protected by his padrino, align himself with this group and now those people that were licking their chops for SLRC and Chicali are going to have a difficult time getting through. We'll see, time for some beers.

Caro Quinteros and MENCHO especially will clean out the PLAZA at a high mortality rate and $$
So I would think IT'S cjng, la linea and Quinteros Paes AGAINST chapo isidro MAYO and chapitos? Might be wrong but it's an educated guess..
Are chapitos still with MAYO or are THEY enemies NOW?
CDS is a mess right now and alliances are thinking down and fighting each OTHER..

      @5:41
Yes Western Sonora it's been a pretty much Lawless open area anyway a lot of people work through that area. But we aren't talking about Western Sonora, we are talkin about Eastern Sonora. Eastern Sonora, they are going to have a much harder time taking over anything. This is an area that is controlled by MZ, and Los Chapitos. And to sit back and pretend like the Sinaloa cartel is not a force to be reckoned with, is plain silly. All of these other people will have to align themselves, just in order to take over Sonora. And you have to remember that there is in fighting that's going on between all of them. Dispute are not only reserved for the people of Sinaloa. All of these other people have disputes as well. And those disputes will be magnified, as this moves forward.

All I'm saying is, don't count anybody out yet. Especially when it comes to caro Quintero taking over. The government may very well be behind Quintero's. But in my experience, the more things change the more they stay the same. And you have to remember, these people have to survive hiding at all times.

    6. 8:03 ABK that's the problem, these people don't need the whole enchilada(Sonora) to be able to progress and succeed. CDS MO has been to make groups in Sonora submit by force and by starving them with lack of product, everybody doesn't have the plug, these people in Western Sonora have had to align themselves with the people who do have the connection because they haven't had any other choice. The old dogs, who are once again the new big dogs, don't have to work in the manner the previous people had to work. As long as excellent product gets moved north, wholesale to these independents and mafias who have their own contacts and control regions of the northern borders, by these groups then everybody is making money working the illegal narcotics and contraband. The percentages are moving in the opposite direction. The terms, how you're treated, the enemy of my enemy and familial ties will determine who you side with. Them Linces wipe out Sinaloenses like a hot knife thru butter. Línea doesn’t need Sonora nor do they want it. Línea charges piso to cross door for different cartels but NEVER WILL THEY EVER let another cartel come in and establish a base. Línea does their own thing. Sinaloa DOES NOT control Chihuahua. Just the small mountain towns close to Sinaloa border. But even the people there are getting tired of being forced to work their land for those asshats.

Cjng took a huge chunk from cds in TIJUANA, baja California, mexicali, all of Yucatan peninsula all the way to Guatemala.. So I don't know how pendejos like you THINK cds plazas are on lock 🔐
If cjng wants a PLAZA they will take it and it's been proven in TIJUANA and guanaguato (cjng killed marros closest including plazas bosses and main hitmen)
Marro is now hiding out away from where his plaza WAS.. He's smart but his luck is running out.. His sister and her husband got KILLED by cjng sicarios a few months BACK
Anyway, my point is CDS has been losing plazas like crazy to CJNG and people rather work and join MENCHO than MAYO and chapitos in different parts of 🇲🇽 so never say never about CJNG in SONORA.. SONORA sicarios might be tough around Locals but will shit their pants on arrival of CJNG 😆
