Heating up the Plazas of Sonora

By Buggs for Borderland Beat
By numerous sources

There is still space
I have been in discussion with a lot of people from the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, who are talking about events related to cartel violence and operations. These people include citizens in the "know how," law enforcement, some military officers, and some governmental prosecutors. As anything coming out of Mexico, everything is hard to filter and most intelligence info is hard, if not impossible to confirm.

I been in this business (reporting on cartel events) for a long time and know how difficult it is to find the truth. I have connections not just with Mexican law enforcement officials (LEO) but also LEOs from the US, mostly federal and/or detectives assigned to federal task forces  (I present in many LEO conferences throughout the United states and have met a lot of contacts). I also have a lot of family and many friends in Mexico, who always share information with me, mostly information coming out of the northwest states.

I have also heard the debates and people who have their own personal opinions about matters of organized crime in Mexico and the US. I find it amusing with the "fans" of some of the cartels, that defend their own fav cartels as if they were talking about some football team, and speak with bias, spewing a one-sided narrative. If it were not a serious matter, it would be comical at best.

One of the incidents of strong contention and debate is the  LeBaron massacre. I wrote a detail perspective about the massacre, that at some point I might publish, but there were so many holes, that new information was coming out even months after the incident.

During the release of the Borderland Beat book and after the Lebaron massacre on November 4, 2019, I was thrown back to the matter of reporting on the Mexican drug cartel, even though I was still talking to people and watching news about cartel activities in Mexico and the US. I never left, I just did not report it. I was instrumental in building the Borderland Facebook page into a 200,000 membership of followers that resulted in gathering exclusive information and media (pictures and videos) material from events happening in Mexico. Facebook closed the page after it got too big for them.

I also started a podcast with the help of some technocrat friends about the drug cartel, where we got to interview people that were directly involved in cartel activities only after they were vetted to get some confirmation of their validity. That also went under after we got threats and we became concerned about the safety of guests and/or staff.

Lately I have spent some of my efforts talking about some activity coming out of Sonora.

Let’s talk about the "Mulatos" mine in the municipality of Sahuaripa again, I mentioned it a few days ago in an article here on BB. It was robbed for the third time, but this time the armed criminals came in by air. More sophisticated and an operation that needs more planning and financing. It screams as robbery assisted by high level operatives.

It has been reported in the past, and most of you are familiar with it, that there have been recent robberies of different mines in the bordering states, that security felt transporting ore on the roads was getting too risky. The Alamos Gold company decided to hire a small plane to transport the valuable cargo. Except the cargo was stolen by criminals that landed in a small plane themselves, a cessna 206. The heavily armed commando flew away with the cargo into the Sierra de Chihuahua horizon, never to be seen again.

Well, I was told by a source from the federal government that they had already identified the suspects. It was none other than your typical suspects, Ever Gonzales Bournes, alias "El Aguila" and his brother Victor Noe Gonzalez Bournes alias "El 500." They are supposedly members of La Linea of the Juarez cartel, but things are so fluid in Mexico, with things always changing, who knows who they affiliate with now-a-days.

Get this, they also claim that perhaps, the two suspects have aligned themselves with Rafael Caro Quintero, which we find strange since Quintero has been affiliated with the Cartel de Sinaloa (CDS). They said that the precious metal was sold in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco.

The notion that the Bournes brothers who are part of the "La Linea" would forge an alliance with "Rafael" might be farfetch, but stranger things have happened in Mexico.  Remember La Linea has been credited with being responsible with the attack on the LeBaron family, where 9 members were killed, including children and women.

Where are the arrests?

Where are the news conferences of potential suspects?

We have seen a recent increase of violence in the towns of Yecora and Tesopaco, Sonora. Then there was the attack in Madera Chihuahua, where they burned down an entire town and abducted (a levanton) entire families who have not been seen to date. Madera also saw the encounter (a topon) between members of Los Juguar and La Linea (or was it an ambush?), although some people are arguing that both cells have formed an alliance. One thing is for certain, there is a lot of bad blood flowing in both states and it has become very unstable for anyone that might get caught in the middle of this mess.

    10. Gulf cartel has territories in at least 5 states and only one faction of the gulf cartel is allegedly allied with jalisco. Theres remaining cdg cells in nuevo leon in oaxaca in veracruz in zacatecas and in tamaulipas. May be in some other places. Remember the alliance of cdg matamoros with what was left of the old school zetas. That gives that faction some life and the reynosa faction has enough man power that the other faction cant outright take over reynosa. In other words cdg is alive and kicking.

  2. Transparency has always been an issue in Mexico. Especially for those within law enforcement. This systematic controll / censorship approach is what led to many of these atrocities. Along with the combination of political corruption and uncorrected abuse.

My opinion is; if not for US president pressure in the case of the massacre of the mormon family members. This matter like that of what transpired for the 43 students disappearances would have been bungled. Many of these independent investigators gave up due to what was stipulated above.

  14. You can all agree at this point it does not matter which cartel has been around the longest. The fact is that they keep pinching the people at the top to keep their employees confused. The people at the top have no idea what's going on because they just got there. They are not privy to all the machinations it takes to run a highly organized literal life and death business where each decision effects the outcome of all. Basically this is how Mexico remains because the political elite do not understand and are unable to see the hefty price on the pshycy that a payoff entails. The moral consequence in other words. It's the equivalent of the addict who gets stuck. How many of you know that feeling. I do all to well. Venezuela is a good example so is Brazil. Not only Mexico, but yes politician and drug lord alike. Both stuck on the bank note not understanding their demise and of their people from within and at their own discord. For much of the time up until now BB has little to say about that lucrative area underneath West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The states of Chihuahua and Sonora who especially Sonora have been so quiet for the better part of 5 decades. 50 years people. Imagine yourself in those 50 years and how you have experienced so much to say wow that's been a good run. For what? What has improved. Do you have new schools, teachers, infrastructure, leaders in your community coming up with innovative ideas. Like in the US you know. The biggest cartel into the world. Able to write a check out of thin air, build a machine to help you breath, maintain a 2 centuries old rail line for mass transport, a public education system to help you achieve your innocent dream you have as children. Pavement to run the wheel off your brand new BMW. Endless fields of agriculture ready to feed the hungry woman and man. An amendment dedicated to the sole integrity of you as a law abiding citizen being able to keep his life in dire situations. How about this, thE first mass producer of all that is technology that WE and EVERYONE incorporate into our lives each day. Think about that one. Don't let your social distancing distract you from the truth. Jesus is, will always be, has been, will never end, is in every moment, and that to my friend you can decide in the freest of all free nations weather you decide to believe or not you can have your free choice to your grave in the most powerful nation ever. Its what's been given by Jesus Himself to the unborn and old alike. Take a hit of your favorite mind bender and see which one works for you. Its moment to moment.

The cartel and the government care only about making money at their own countrymen's expense. They could take their profits and make Mexico a better place. Little by little. The poor man just gets by on God's faith. It's easier to blame America for your problems, all why destroying your own country and killing your own people.

    9. Will disagree with Mexico's citizens not wanting to better oneself. After speaking to many citizens on a hesitant trip for over 15 years. The citizens are fed up with political corruption & the organized criminal associations of cartels and government.
Outnumbered politically / financially and massacred. People are often stumbling on roadblocks to make the necessary changes. The majority of its citizens are humble and giving.

  18. When I can't understand about this article is, who in their right mind would ever suggest that Rafael Caro Quintero, is anything other than part of the people in the area that he is hiding. I've seen several suggestions recently, in more than one form, that suggests infighting within the CDS. Believe me, it's minimal at best. And nobody in Juarez, other than the CDS people, is working with RCQ. And it is really easy, to try to unseat people in Sonora, buy make it appear like they did something, but they may not have done. I choose my words carefully when I say that. But I do know, but there are a lot of people that are very jealous of these people, and also have personal vendettas, for numerous reasons. Including but not limited to the murderer death of their family members. ( El Fox, El Cedafi) and I'm sure the family members but you mentioned in the other article that you wrote, that were supposedly murdered by tin Tin's people, would love to see retribution some way. The harsh reality is, there is no way that you're going to leave in that area unless you're a ruthless evil son of a bitch. It's really that simple.

    1. infighting in CDS is not minimal. CDS has been having infighting for a long time, at times more than others, sometimes los Guzman side have won sometimes they have not. The biggest infight was with Beltranes, beltranes fell because the government took them out not los Guzman, Guzman where never able to defeat Isidro till this day. And then you have the fighting with los Damaso which obiously Los Guzman had an easy victory. You still have El Nini vs El Ruso, the thing is that you dont hear it as much because its not covered as much, put it this way, there is no other cartel from outside Sinaloa with a solid precense in sinaloa, theres no other cartel deep enough and strong enough inside sinaloa to fight sinaloa on its own territory yet Sinaloa is one of the most violent states, how? Who is CDS fighting inside sinaloa? Themselves. You dont hear much about Choix Sinaloa but theyre going at it hard SINALOA vs SINALOA, to the point where most are leaving their homes and those who stay are forming autodefensas.

I know its nothing like the infighting in CDG, but minimal? Nope, even the infighting in CJNG is not as big as the infighting in Sinaloa

      Delete
    2. Is RCQ fighting with anyone in CDS? Arturo Beltran used too much cocain. The BLO have very little to do with infighting in Sinaloa today. And has absolutely nothing to do with my point. RCQ isnt working with the bosses from La Linia. the quinteros have been in the game forever. And no fools. The Guzmans are very busy. The Zambada's are very busy. War isnt good for business.

Totally off topic, but no one is hotter than CJNG. and right now more than ever, they are losing loads, and taking huge hits. Like a thousand people have just been indicted in the United States, that are affiliates with Jalisco. Including menchos own children. Those cases aren't even close to being adjudicated, and by the time all the Smoke Clears from that, things should be getting interesting.

But as usual, some troll had to get on here and make a point of something, didn't have nothing to do with what I was saying, PRESENT TIME. The money behind the CDS is still very prominent. CDS, and their franchises, aren't doing any thing less than doing whats in the best interest of keeping that money flowing world wide, especially in sonora. People from mexicali are a huge franchise, Paez Soto. Huge names....Los Salazar. Paez Soto. Paredes..... those are the most successful franchises of CDS. Present day. So RCQ participating in heating up CDS plazas by backing linea, would be completely insane, when they already feed the most successful franchises that exist. Comon sense.

So I will hop hop hop back into silence. It's way more fun not being involved with narco bullshit.

      Hop hop hop

      Delete
    3. RCQ has a beef with Salazars so linea makes sense. RCQ can do what he wants nobody is gonna step to RCQ not even Mayo

      Delete
    4. @344, why does anyone have to step to anyone? What makes you think that these people aren't anything other than loosely affiliated partners with a comon goal. I see a lot of things being said, that are just argumentative.

I've already commented on all of this way more than I wanted to. Fighting with anybody in the CDS is simply unproductive. Such is the politics of the narco-trafficking industry. But I'm 100% sure that these people are more interested in profits, than fighting with each other. I'm sure that nobody likes the fact that two of the Zambada's had got on the stand and testified against Chapo, but that's another story altogether.

I hate clouding the issues with bringing other names into an article, that doesn't make reference to those names.

    7. Stranger things have happened. But I still disagree with you.

I am not bloodthirsty. I would not be proud of myself if I had to harm another living soul. And for a guy like me, being part of what's going on in Mexico, is definitely somebody else's game. At the same time, I was a trafficker. As a trafficker I had to navigate around personalities, that did not think the same way I did. Some of the people that I knew, did not ask for trouble. But when it came their way, they were the most evil people I ever seen.

I sure would hate to be part of the politics culiacan Sinaloa. That's a whole lot of testosterone flowing.

There is part of this forum that is absolutely incredible. And when I read through a lot of the threads, I can see the different perspectives. Especially when it's coming from somebody that's affiliated with law enforcement. When you see anything from LE point of view, it always has a lot more speculation. So I could go through and pick out which one of you is probably somehow associated with LE.

But IPA drinker, I love the way you put your facts down. And I am also impressed. I don't pick apart what you say, because most of it I agree with. The thing about rcq, not so much. But I see where you are getting it from and why you feel that way.

For me, everything's not an argument it's a different variation of a perspective. I really like the way you write.

Don't let it go to your head. LOL

    9. I feel you, man. There's kind of a reason why I do what I do. Sometimes you don't want to say too much, and sometimes you don't want to give yourself away either. So I beat around the bush a little bit. I have a lot more knowledge in some of these areas, that's why I'm trying to get my perspective. But I agree with you. It's monotonous. And I didn't mean to bore you or offend you. You don't think I realized my own fate with these people, or it could be yourself for that matter. I don't step on their turf. And I hope they're smart enough not to step on mine. It's funny, because I see the younger generation around. They don't know me. I get pretty close to them, just close enough, I leave them alone. Hopefully they leave me alone. Have a good

The original big group that had sway over the state was working out of Caborca and the people that for some time replaced them have been involuntarily retired. It's an "Illegal Business" that you don't need to monopolize like De Beers to prop up the price to make a profit, just having entry points through control or agreement will allow you to export and also expand your wholesale by providing material to those that control entry points.
Why would anybody seek to work with people who have proven to be traitors? Just cause they're from the same state? The top dogs reach the top and bring their own, at least 3 generations deep. Decades without freedom and watching your family and fortunes diminish will clearly demonstrate who is your Amigo. Their isn't another fugitive whos arrest and conviction or death would justify the WOD and the billion dollar budgets of the AED and this Carocter would have spent those decades in prison in vain by trusting his paisanos that are not his blood. Your original comment didn't once have the word franchise and you say their is a no way RCQ would be supporting or working with CDJ/LL/NCDJ and I say you're wrong.
Yeah I know just because GN gets butchered consistently in Chihuahua doesn't mean CDS franchises aren't passing loads thru Juarez but they will pay piso. RCQ knows the people in Chihuahua, doesn't have any beef with them and can make the money he needs to maintain his freedom. It's all about the Benjamin Franklins right?
Any and every plaza has a price...

    4. That's not exactly what I said. What I said was, that successful franchises that already exist on the southern border region towards the West Coast, CDS already feeds. The Quintero's have always been in the busines. And Jalisco is one of their areas. So what I'm telling you is this, why would he heat up the plazas, when he's already been there feeding them forever. Everyone acts like these guys haven't been in business, they've been in business the whole time. They are just doing what they do. Is he trying to take the whole pie for himself, hell no that's suicide. All I'm telling you that why work against the already existing power structure, when they already own the existing power structure? Jalisco is constantly battling for more ground. As a result of that, more seizures, their Associates are all getting busted in the United States. Pretty much exactly what happened to Chapo Guzman.Do you believe that RCQ wants to be in the middle of that? With his status, it's in his best interest to be as low as possible. Mencho doesn't sleep well, i would bet. Is it possible that there are people that are in the Chihuahua, juarez region that RCQ is in bed with? That goes without saying. Absolutely. But they aren't involved in a dispute, over territory, and invading Sonora to start a war, when they already have those franchises as options to feed, don't make good business sense. One thing that buggs said that Rings true in my ears, "stranger things have happened." But in this case, I wouldn't bet my milk money on it. First of all ,starting all out war in this region specially Sonora, is risky. But putting the frontera power structure in the middle of murdering woman and children, might be a way to weaken people. But they aren't going to forcibly take it from them, and some sneaky backstabbing operation. Before you see that happen, you will see the Guzman boys go down, or Mayo for that matter. There are so many things that happened in the past couple of years that I could make reference to. Mayo zambada himself, said that a war was coming. Are all these drug kingpins hiding in the Sinaloa region, going to make things so hot for themselves, when they're already being hunted? Stranger things have happened, but my instinct tells me that it's not so.

Now I'm basing all of this on my own experiences in the past. The more things change the more they stay the same. And as my friend stated earlier in one of the other comments, there is no honor among Thieves. The big guys still work in concert, to line their pockets. There is no shortage of Sinaloa narcotics on the street. And I'm quite sure that all these franchises are extremely busy. That speaks for itself.

    5. @ABK If your rep is that you give up to authorities, betray, swindle and kill your own people I can assure you I would align myself with another strongman in my area of operation. Neither JAGL or MIZG took any action when told by the gray haired man after his release that he was reclaiming his old plazas. The same year of his release in PP/RP the person who killed some of his people in Caborca was discombobulated. Less than a year after his release LFSA fell and the gray haired man and allies managed to take a sizable amount of the plaza his relative FJCP once controlled. Like I said before, just because they're paisanos doesn't mean he will ally his faction/franchise with them. The eternal underboss fulfilled his end of the agreement and tragically passed from of a heart attack in the hospital during surgery like ACF. Much respect from a drunk man

  22. Times change and Cartels arent who they used to be, they always been criminals but before something was different, there where people with history. There was the guys who made money, the ones that followed rules and respected the civilian population. There was interesting stories of how highly trained soldiers formed a cartel. Most stories and leaders seemed mythical, legends, you would hear about them, their corridos but had no clue who where they or how they looked, it was always a mystery. And now its all gone, any gang of lowlifes can be called cartel, now they wanna show off, making threaths killing anybody, no respect for society just to try to make a name for them selves. Now a target isnt just a person but anything around them, people vehicles get stolen to block traffic, they all wanna act like the good guys and stop crime and they committ the crimes they pledge to stop, before, hitmen where known in the underworld, respected and highly paid, now its any kid with a rifle who does it to look cool to show off on social media and wont even get paid. Now its a bunch of druggies, drug dealers became drug addicts and kill each other kill their own friends their own family and change "cartel" now its a tragic novela where too many people are dying more innocents than druggies are paying the consequences. The government doesnt do shit, they attacked them when they where structured and organized, now they let them do what they want when theyre more dangerous to the community and no rules to follow. Before if the cops didnt check you the boss did, now nobody. Its a sad thing, theres this "cartel fatigue" where we dont dont care no more who is who now its fuxk them all equally, they seem so overrated now and its hard to imagine anyone looking up to these people trying to be like them, some nobodies with no legacy. Yet its still an issue that shouldnt be ignored, camt look away from it not yet, its still a serious problem probably even more serious now than ever given the fact that theyre not being persecuted anymore and Mexico is living its deadliest year ever.

I wouldn't expect you to be a cheer leader. Contribution is cool, though. Not everyone is right. 3. Hi El C l,

Reading about and sometimes viewing the gratuitous violence on BB simply does not equate to 'fun' for me. Interest, awareness and knowledge is my cup of tea.

Without BB I would not have learned of Dr. Mireles' false and cruel political imprisonment which led me to join in at the Release Dr. Mireles protest in Toronto. For the plonkers who will jump to the conclusion that I am pro illegal Mexican migration, Wrong. My sympathy and support for the good doctor was with the view for his immediate and safe release in Mexico.

Any comment, opinion, question, declaration, observation, provocation, BS, rant that gets posted here is fair game for deciphering and shredding including mine but all are nonetheless 'Input'...and that's a 'fact'.

Plus, similar to the men here discussing cartel analysis, calibre of weapons, laundering strategies etc. I'm able to offer my female perspective...like, those dudes would look so much better holding their weapons with manicured hands, or WOW, bet that dead guy would regret not having a Brazilian wax now that he's pants are yanked down...

to Help or not help poor mexicans who are fleeing from violence Or do we turn our backs on all of them
If we vote we can help or not for a bigger longer wall
Websites like this really influence more then just putting down a comment It change how we feel and thus it changes how we vote or how we feel about our Border Neighbors
its only natural for one to put 2 cents worth in =if a silly joke to lighten mood or add how these drug wars
affect us We are the ones that see it on the out side The robberys in our homes or accidents on our roads or the abused child because parents were on drugs
So yea you matter I see the effects of this Drug war here Arizona is crazy with drugs and arm dealers etc.

Well because of corruption and spread of poor eliterate people, criminals flurish and multiply also...and
All these people who are eliterate here commenting on their fav cartels and gangs bragging for idiotic life also shares thesame mindset of mentality with these criminals.
