CDC Face mask recommendation: how to easily make yours with everyday products

Face Masks: It has been frustrating and confusing to wait as the expert’s battle it out regarding face masks. In the last week in particular those of us who carefully follow the daily task force conferences, have been promised a definitive answer.  Yesterday CDC announced the recommendation we cover our faces when out and about.

Strangely enough the reason they give is the same complaint my assistant has been telling me; in the market, people are not abiding by the social distancing rule.  I was thinking, “well yes, how can they?”.  A couple of weeks ago, she began wearing a cloth mask she wears while shopping and conducting errands.

CDC recommends not using the N95 or surgical masks, as they are not needed. Masks are difficult to find anyway.    CDC also explains that wearing a mask doesn’t protect the wearer, but the recommendation is driven by the number of asymptomatic persons, who are very contagious, are mingling with the public and spreading “droplets” even while speaking and infecting others.  It is those situations that are targeted.  The virus is spread by droplets, from seeing, coughing even breathing.

Remember: this is optional not mandatory.  If you have asthma or lung issues you may find that you have difficulties breathing in the mask.  In that case you may want to try the coffee filter or paper towel masks, easy to make, I made one in one minute, and does not restrict breathing.

Drs and scientists have been reluctant to recommend this action.  The white house has been pushing for the mask recommendation.  To me it just makes sense, and I find it difficult to believe it doesn’t help all those who wear a mask, asymptomatic or not, I am a pragmatic, logical person…it simply makes sense.

Below is information from CDC and instructions in making various types of masks.

Recommendation Regarding the Use of Cloth Face Coverings, Especially  in Areas of Significant Community-Based Transmission

Use of Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19

CDC continues to study the spread and effects of the novel coronavirus across the United States.  We now know from recent studies that a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms (“asymptomatic”) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms (“pre-symptomatic”) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.  This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms.  In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus.  CDC is additionally advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.  Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.

The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators.  Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

This recommendation complements and does not replace the President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America, 30 Days to Slow the Spreadexternal icon, which remains the cornerstone of our national effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.  CDC will make additional recommendations as the evidence regarding appropriate public health measures continues to develop.

How to Wear Face Cover:

Applying a face mask - step 1
Face coverings should—fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face be secured with ties or ear loops include multiple layers of fabric allow for breathing without restriction be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape.

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.  Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.

Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators.  Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

Should cloth face coverings be washed or otherwise cleaned regularly? How regularly?
Yes. They should be routinely washed depending on the frequency of use.

How does one safely sterilize/clean a cloth face cover?
A washing machine should suffice in properly washing a face covering.

How does one safely remove a used face cover?
Individuals should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth when removing their face covering and wash hands immediately after removing.

The video shows the spays going through some of these mask if you guys are making your own mask you might want to do the same. No point in making a mask that won’t work and keep everyone safe.

  7. Can you please stop promoting this hoax? Yes the virus is real but its not nearly as deadly as they are saying. Finally the truth is starting to trickle out. Two stanford doctors recently admitted the common flu is ten times more deadly then covid-19 and Dr. Faucis claim of the opposite has no bearing on reality and Mr. Fauci has been pulling numbers out of thin air to make his assumptions. Nobody knows how many people have gotten this virus and nobody knows the actual mortality rate but its very clear its not nearly as high as the MSM is claiming it is they said. What is funny is both Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx are both members of a board whos group receives millions of dollars from Bill Gates foundation. The same group is discounting the anti malaria treatment drug that has been very effective against covid-19 in testing and promoting their own up and coming covid-19 vaccine. You cant make this stuff up. The way this virus has been presented to the world is a crime of epic proportions and the deeper some people are digging the more insanely shady stuff is being brought to the surface. Gates also funded the Wuhan laboratory where the outbreak may have originated...The Communists needed to squash the uprising in Hong Kong and what a better way then to keep them all on lockdown 24-7? They also knew it would destroy the USAs economy over night and Trumps chances at re-election...Trump is being blamed by the media and is not allowed to hold any rallies under the guise of social distancing etc. Anyone who questions the media or their agenda are immediately labeled a conspiracy theorist, a lunatic, and out casted from society. Humanity is nothing more than a herd of animals..sow enough panic and watch the herd trample itself to death. Much love Chivis appreciate what you do.

    9. Agree, the timing of this is more than mere coincidence. It's only after crashing the economy that the very statisticians who modeled 2 million people dying in the USA are walking it back from 2mill down to 200k and now even less. The real kicker is now the media is trying to blame Trump for this overreaction. The most contagious thing in the world is not a virus, but hysteria and fear, and your emotions have been played.

    12. @12:11PM

You have no understanding of the reasoning behind the precautions. The reason for all the "hype" is that it's a new virus infecting humans and there's an element of the unknown which may or may not be catastrophic. The notion of how deadly it might be is secondary (I say this with extreme caution) to how it might be contained. That's the key. We simply don't know so we caution on the side of safety first. The flu has been around in humans for at least 7 thousand years or so and spread worldwide, or least most of the known world, for over 2000 years. So it's to late to take extreme precautions. With the *novel* (new) coronavirus we might have a chance. However, with people like you spreading nonsense we might not since there's always those who think they know better.

      Delete
    13. @12:11PM The Virus is not as deadly because we have shut down the country, except for essential workers. If not for that, the infected would be in the millions and the deaths would be way higher.
I do find it suspect that Bill Gates happens to have a stake in the Coronovirus vaccine. It just raises red flags about him wanting to profit from this.
The CDC did spread misinformation at the beginning about not wearing any face coverings, which could have prevented many people from spreading it and getting it. Obviously that's changed recently, but very misguided on their part.
Do agree that it's being politicized by the Democrats, as they are already laying the groundwork to do an investigation committee to lay responsibility on Trump.

  21. Anybody know anyone who has caught it yet? Know anyone who knows someone who knows someone someone someone anyone somewhere personally verifiable? Yes? No? Cuz we sure have alot of people catching the unemployment virus thats a fun number u dont nees guess or deflate unless your msm trying to deflect attention away from the country shooting themselves in the heffin foot. This is a valuable site, probably one of the most valuable on the net regarding the topics it covers, u guys report what doesnt get reported else where, i apollogize if im out of line here but where is the controversy in perpetuating whats already been on the tv overkill? Masks are indeed helpful, as stated if one is already sick. But it also serves another purpose inadvertantly, it perpetuates paranoia. Proper precautions indeed should be taken but i think we need to ask ourselves how long we are going to allow this to go on -- by this i mean, staying 6 feet away to avoid being 6 feet underground, have we gone that peanut butter to accept this as the justifiably new norm? I wouldnt have thought it possible even a few months ago, now im not so sure and its a bit unsettling. If we need to be taking certain drastic steps to stay safe it will be self evident, trust me u wont need to wait for the tv to tell u what os what or what time it is..we all want to do whats right for ourselves and mi y tu familia so i understand yo comprendo but ask yourselves where this is going and what consequences unforseen there may be if we allow ourselves too be manipulated during this time of crisis? I will end with this, if one cares about ones life and the life of others it is ones responsibility to be considerate of others absolutely but equally important to ask questions and be skeptical of the do as your told because i say so mentality. We live a privledged life with freedoms fought for by people before us so we dont truely understand that these freedoms can easily be taken for granted and just as equally soon taken away. History shows that libertas once lost we probably arent getting them back. The battle for freedom and way of life isnt always decided with guns, its decided way before that with the choices we all make and how we think. We are a young nation with many things yet to be set in stone, the direction of this nation and the worlds next decade maybe even the next century is being shaped right this very moment, so please people, lets do the due diligence on this one please can we really do it on this one can we pretty please with narco news on top? id ask u all in person if i could and i dont think i ever felt that way in my 30 years using the internet. If someone reading this remembers one thing ive said remember this, although safety is important to us all, those whom willingly give up their liberties for the promise of or temporary measure of security deserve neither liberty nor security. Take that statement to heart and remind anyone who says otherwise that their current mindset may be of greater danger to notion of safety than the insert fear of here. Violence is force, violence is a means, violence is all to often a product and precursor of fear. Knowledge is power, knowledge is truth, knowledge is liberty and the foresight to protect it...always. Be kind to your fellow man. Vulnerable people need to take special precautions as do carriers of any illness as they always have, but for most of us In this time of anti social social media, is more in person "social distancing" the thing we really need to stay "well" right now? United we _ _ _ _ _, Divided we _ _ _ _. Sing along gang, come on yal know the words...

I posted this out of good will and hope for each and every one of you and for the experiment of this world. Again my apollogies if im unlearned just uh sharing another uh point uh view. :) ok now lets all lighten up and live the life we came to see for today is the day, for to be is to be merry, necessito amor i need love to live, so even tho cash poor my soul never goes broke and refuses to give. Cheers.
