Mexico's former Security Chief, Genaro Garcia Luna arraigned in Brooklyn

Chivis Martinez  for Borderland Beat

El Rey and El Grande are among those expected to testify against Garcia Luna

He was the man chosen by then president Filipe Calderon, to lead Mexico’s “War on Drugs”, and today, in a Brooklyn courtroom, Genaro Garcia Luna pleaded “Not Guilty”, to charges of international cocaine trafficking conspiracy and on charges he accepted a fortune in bribes from Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s Sinaloa cartel allowing its operation to function with impunity. He is also accused of lying to immigration while applying for a US citizenship.

Prosecutors indicated they were working to “resolve the case without trial”, meaning a plea agreement of some type, typical, however El Chapo was never offered discussions to talk about a plea.
Garcia Luna's attorneys are seeking bail, prosecutors ask for his detainment as he is an “unacceptable risk of flight”.  They pointed out his high ranking connections.

His role in facilitating the Sinaloa Cartel organization, became a point of testimony of several witnesses, in the trial of El Chapo.

Among them, Jesus "El Rey" Zambada, former chief of operations of the Sinaloa Cartel, and brother of current leader, El Mayo, Rey said he had bribed Garcia Luna, with whom he said he had met in a restaurant twice and that in both times he had delivered money.

On the first occasion, according to Zambada, was in 2005, when Garcia Luna was the head of the AFI, under the mandate of Vicente Fox, and the second occasion transpired in  the following year, after having accepted the post of Secretary of Public Security with Felipe Calderón.

After his retirement in February 2013, Garcia Luna moved to Golden Beach, Florida, an area where residences have a price tag of over 4 Million Dollars.  He occupied a luxury home with four bedrooms and a private dock

  1. AMLO is cleaning house! The process of replacing the Calderón folks with those loyal to his backers is underway.

Both Calderón and Garcia Luna were still pulling a lot of strings which blocked access to key positions for the (obviously corrupt) clans behind AMLO.

  6. He needs to be made an example of for those in similar positions of power. North of the border there is the rule of law. A concept unfamiliar to him.

  12. When are they gonna lock her up? She's always with corrupt jerks. Guarantee she's still getting a cut. Who knows they may suicide this guy. Just like they suicided Epstein. Meaning they'll make it look like suicide. Then hide him somewhere until he dies. The way they did Josef Mengale. Over operation paperclip. And let me just clarify something. Trump meet Epstein just as much as Clinton. Guarantee trump isn't innocent. But at least trump isn't good at hiding. The way Mexico's politicians are. At least he's bringing these issues to light. Mexicans been getting massacred. Not EPN Clinton Obama, or anyone else ever gaf. He may be just exploiting the drug wars. Seeing as elections are coming. But at least the world sees Mexico. Screw american intervention. Screw relying on politicians. Mexico needs the second amendment.

I guess the fifth amendment does not apply for immigrants.
