The fight in a prison in northern Mexico occurred during a sporting event to celebrate the New Year

A year-end sporting event in a prison in northern Mexico ended in tragedy. A fight at the Center for Social Reinsertion (Cereso) of Cieneguillas in the Mexican State of Zacatecas left at least 16 dead and five injured, the State Government Public Security Department said in a statement. The tragedy in this jail in the north of the country on the last day of 2019 adds to the list of incidents of violence and riots in Mexican prisons.

According to local media, the fight originated between rival teams (Sinaloa Cartel members vs CDG members) participating in a football match to celebrate the New Year on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Zacatecas Security Secretary, Ismael Camneros Hernandez, inmates produced weapons including firearms, at least four and “hechizas” or sharpened objects and other prison made weapons, such as in image at left.

Allegedly, the game was organized by prison authorities.

The emergency code was activated requesting assistance from state and municipal police as well as the national guard.

At the site  were relatives of the inmates who visited the penitentiary on the occasion of the festivities, who were evacuated  when the confrontation began. About 15 people died inside the prison, while six more were transferred to receive medical attention. Hours later, one of the injured lost his life in the hospital.

In Zacatecas, five cartels operate; CDG, CJNG, Sinaloa, Talibanes and CDN .

    1. What the hell kind of prison security system do they have where inmates carry guns and and swords? That's the crazy part! Maybe that's the idea. Lax security = more weapons to kill each other = lower prison population = less government spending. Guards are expendable.

  13. I like to see detailed ( before, during, and after) videos and pictures of the violent events. I am betting the prisoners had the fight planned months ago. It is what happens in 3rd world nations like Brazil and Mexico.
