Celaya, Guanajuato: Ford extortion aftermath leads to a forced migration

Video translation is as follows:

Newscaster # 1: And precisely the wave of insecurity that prevails in Guanajuato has caused some merchants to migrate to other states.

Female Reporter: The extortion and insecurity that deprives the city of Celaya gives no respite to any sector. And now it has caused local entrepreneurs to migrate to other states.

Querétaro Governor Francisco Dominguez: At this moment, businesses that are leaving like Ford Montes that began its closure will open its agency in Querétaro. And the whole Montes family is going to live in Querétaro.

Female Reporter: In the automotive facilities that was shot at on September 19 allegedly for not paying extortion payments, and that closed its doors, there was very little movement of some people inside. The closure of the agency affects not only workers but also nearby merchants.

Female Merchant: One of them tells me, a person we know, right? He tells me it's unfortunate because I have been working there for many years. I'm 48 years old, what am I going to do? What am I going to do? And right now look how things are, it’s not just this there are many businesses that are closing due to the organized crime.

Male Reporter: And was there many people who came by here to buy their soft drinks, their tortas, their cookies, and food?

Anonymous Male Merchant: There were about 100 people who worked there so just imagine, they would come over to buy and it affected us a lot.

Female Reporter: However, for the president of the Business Coordinating Council in Celaya it is only a blow to the table to say enough is enough for the agency with lots of roots in Celaya. But he trusts the agency won’t be leaving the city.

President CCE (Business Coordinating Council) of Celaya Jesús Torrez: Right now, I will have to liquidate them. And those that are liquidated will have to go somewhere else and accommodate themselves elsewhere. That is why it seems to me that it is not the right decision for them to leave.

Female Reporter: He also asked for coordination from the three levels of government.

Guanajuato Governor Diego Sinhue: We are working hard, we are going to turn the program around. We are working with nothing less than the Federation, great events have arrived, investments continue to arrive. Just the same this is a stage that we will overcome.

  1. Wow so sad for people who have worked at a company for years and had some job security but had to close for their safety as well as the bottom line being affected.Only problem is when the company moves to a new place and even if they can track down the truth about extortions in another town, what's to prevent any group moving in?Just completely bad for business and Mexican's economy as a whole. That used to be 1 of the better states in Mexico until organized crime took over. The authorities need to get a handle on this or investments fly the coop but I doubt it will be tackled as it's too late, the weeds have taken root and there's no way they can afford the manpower for what needs to be done without outside help.Big problem with this as the rich suffer (extortions and the rich provide the jobs for the poor)and the poor suffer with the lack of jobs so what will the future hold for Mexico who as once the 15th biggest economy in the world?

    1. This type of criminal behavior is widespread throughout Mexico. These manifestations are the result of decades of corruption officially/non-officially speaking.
What options are left for those who rely on these and/or others alike for income?
The rippling effect is visible everywhere.

    2. Fack Ford.
But this dealer is a PRIISTA in a city ruled by a PAN party narco-governor that has no more access to Huachicol and needs to make it up to himself by robbing and stealing "business" from anybody he meets in the state, being a PRIISTA has and should have consequences.

  5. The Mexican media only mention CJNG and ignore other criminal cells like Santa Rosa de Lima fuel-thieves who are doing all the extortion in Guanajuato because they got eliminated from the fuel-theft business.

  6. The extortion side of these organizations as so oppressive to the locals. If they would just sell drugs and buy stuff at local car dealerships and merchants that would work great for everyone. The local cartel shouldn't let this happen, it doesn't make sense to destroy the economy in your home city, they should protect it and build it up not extort it until it goes away. I don't see why a major GTO would need to collect money from a dealership until they go out of business, don't they make enough on drugs?

  7. The extorsion situation is Celaya AND other towns is horrendous. It is much larger than just the Ford dealership......The Flagship Ford is the tip of the iceberg and the light at the end of the tunnel is but a pin point, sadly.

  8. This causes more poverty and desperation which plays directly into the hands of the cartels. Cartels can only exist with poverty and government complicity.

  11. The damned cartels will eventually head for Queretaro too. You want to rid Mexico of the cartels? The Mexican wealthy needs their fair share of the pain.
