77% Increase in Organized Crime Related Homicides in August

Yaqui for Borderland Beat from: MND y Milenio
Organized crime-related homicides soared 77% in August
It was the third consecutive month with more than 2,000 such murders

Murders attributed to organized crime broke a record in August at 2,290, a 77.8% increase over the same month last year. It was the third month in a row with over 2,000 such murders — there were 2,264 in July and 2,249 in June.

With 240 murder cases, Guanajuato topped the list of the most violent states, followed by México state with 206, Baja California 196, Veracruz 176, Jalisco 167 and Michoacán 128.

The month’s most striking case, however, is that of Veracruz, which saw one of the year’s worst massacres when an attack on the Caballo Blanco nightclub in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz left 30 dead and 13 injured.

That attack, alone, bumped the murder rate in the state by 35.3% over the previous month.

Although Michoacán saw just one more murder than in July and did not surpass its June total of 140 cases, it also stood out in August for two grave instances of violence linked to narco-trafficking.
The first was on August 8 when the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) left 19 bodies hanging from an overpass in Uruapan.
The second was Friday’s gun battle in Tepalcatepec, Michoacán between the CJNG and a rival, Juan José “El Abuelo” (The Grandfather) Farías Álvarez, which left at least 9  dead and has ongoing skirmishes.
Guanajuato is the battleground between the CJNG and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, "El Marro". The bitter rivalry sent the state’s homicide rate up to 240 cases, shattering July’s total of 185.

Despite the historic levels of violence, federal Public Security Secretary Alfonso Durazo said at a  press conference on Friday that Mexico is getting closer to achieving peace, while admitting that the government’s anti-crime strategy has not yet delivered its goal.

  1. Free for all murder and mayhem in mexico. No end in sight. When criminals will be held accountable and the corruption ends, only then will the country reach salvation.

  2. We have two polar opposites...Calderon who went hard by starting this war on drugs. Then we have ALMO who is not meeting our high expectations as homicides continue to increase. I don't think legalization is the answer because these carteles y pandillas will rely on non drug illegal activities to make money as many of them are now. Sad situation for la raza.

  3. Except for Baja California, none of the other states that border the US - Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas – are listed in the murder rate. The states of Guanajuato, México, Veracruz, Jalisco and Michoacán are all far removed from the US. Does this mean that Texas college students are safe visiting the cities of Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Nogales, Reynosa, and Matamoros during spring break? Ha ha ha!

  4. Closer to achieving peace? Unless you mean AMLO is one day closer to being replaced, I don’t see how that makes any sense.

  7. "Mexico is getting closer to achieving peace"?

Why do politicians always say things like this that everyone knows isn't true?

    I did some math:
There was a murder in August in Mexico every 19.5 minutes.
There are 74 murders every day in Mexico.

This is crazy. Mexico is far from achieving peace, it's getting worse.

  8. IT will eventually reach the peace accord once all groups are eliminated and just one remains. Then greed will break the group apart and boom again homicides everywhere.

  12. Yanqui that's it, I am packing up, almost every night I have to put up, with hearing automatic gun fire, sometimes in the day too. Michoacan is hot right now, neighbors are stock piling ammo, water, rations. They are getting ready for war, with Menchos cartel. I am headed to Costa Rica, where it is said is more tranquil.
    Viva Michoacan

  13. ALMO is doing his best to hide this report. He is only open to telling riddles and jokes.

  14. Some people say the PRIISTA nercogovernors allied with PAN MC PRD PVEM are washing their hands off crime and even instigating it and leaving it in the hands of Obrador to burn him and his 4 Transformacion to make it easy for corruption and narco politicians to come back to power or hold on to impunity for past crimes and corruption.
All these narco governoros are allied with people like fox, EPN and FECAL, and in Veracruz where Morena Governor Cuitlahuac Garcia is the boss, the opposition tool Jorge Winckler does his personal best every day as in Guanajuato, Carlo zamarrioa, both belong to PAN opposition, a coincidence?
Throw in MC Enrique Alfaro in Jalisco and PRD in Michuakan and Guerrero.
All crimes of state before and after THE AGE OF AMLO...

  15. I DONT KNOW HOW MANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT COMMENT ACTUALLY LIVE IN MEXICO? IF THEY DO, THEY KNOW LIKE I KNOW THAT EVERY TIME THERE IS A NEW POLITICAL PARTY IN POWER (LIKE MORENA) POWER IN THE CARTELS SHIFT.... SO MURDERS RISE UP. IT HAPPENS AT A LOCAL LEVEL STATE AND GETS WORST IF ITS FEDERAL.IVE SEEN THIS FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. THE CITY THAT I LIVE IN EVERY TIME THERE IS A NEW MAYOR SOME PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT IS IN THE SAME CARTEL....
