“El Hummer” Wins Temporary Amparo Against his Extradition to the US

Yaqui for Borderland Beat from: Milenio

US extradition of ''El Hummer'' Delayed, one of the founder of ''Los Zetas''
Jaime González Durán, ''El Hummer'', is also related to the murder of singer Valentín Elizalde in November 2006.

A federal judge granted a suspension that stopped the extradition to the United States for the moment by Jaime González Durán,  "El Hummer" , founder of the criminal group Los Zetas, identified by the authorities as one of the most violent and dangerous criminals in the country, and is related to the murder of the singer Valentín Elizalde in November 2006.

"El Hummer" is a deserter from the Army and was part of the Special Forces Aircraft Group (Gafes), the elite unit of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), which was responsible for locating and capturing the main drug lords.

González Durán processed a demand for guarantees, a request that was transferred to the Sixth District Court of Amparo in Criminal Matters, which granted a suspension that prevents delivery to the United States at this time.
"In view of the application for amparo, the ex official's suspension is expressly decreed only with respect to the extradition of the complainant to be handed over to the United States government, for the purpose that it is not executed and the petitioner of amparo remains in the place where the petition is filed. He is to be at the disposal of this court, which refers to his personal freedom", details the agreement of Judge Juan Mateo Brieba de Castro.

He also requested the Fourteenth District Judge on Federal Criminal Proceedings in Mexico City, as well as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, make known the procedural status that stays the extradition procedure of the complainant.

"El Hummer" argued that he had knowledge of the determinations of February 26 of this year in which a legal opinion was issued in the aforementioned extradition file, its delivery did proceed; and, on March 25, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs determined to grant the formal request for extradition.

The US District Court for the District of Columbia seeks to try González Durán for his probable responsibility in the crimes of conspiracy, distribution and importation of cocaine and marijuana, as well as money laundering, among other charges.

González Durán, like more than 40 other Gafes who joined the then leader of the Gulf cartel, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén and  thus "Los Zetas" group was born.

"El Hummer" was the head of the plaza in Reynosa, Tamaulipas , until he was arrested on November 7, 2008, by elements of the Federal Police. Currently he faces three convictions for various crimes that total more than 73 years in prison.

Elizade Valetín, a popular singer, was attacked by a group of three men who, with heavy weapons, carried out 75 detonations on the truck where he was traveling that caused his death along with his driver, Raymundo Ballesteros and his representative and friend Mario Mendoza Grajeda; while his cousin, Fausto 'Tano' Elizalde, was wounded. He was murdered after leaving a palenque at the Expo-Feria in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, in 2006.
