Cuernavaca: Shootout Leaves Businessman Dead, Reporter and 2 others Wounded

Around 10:00 am this morning there was a shooting in the center of Cuernavaca when merchants gathered on an avenue in El Centro awaiting a meeting with  authorities.

The entrepreneur Jesús García, known as ''Don Chuy'', was murdered on Wednesday morning in the center of Cuernavaca, Morelos. ''Don Chuy'', who died when he arrived at the hospital, was the organizer of the Cuernavaca Fair.

At least 30 journalists among cameramen, photographers and reporters had to throw themselves to the ground when they heard the shots.

The state commissioner, Jose Antonio Ortíz Guarneros, said at a news conference that the shooting happened as the third meeting between authorities, business owners and street vendors was about to wrap up. These meetings were intended to reorganization the street vendors in the Plaza de Armas, Cuernavaca, the Morelense Capital.

He noted that after the meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes, the local Social Development Secretary, Gilberto Alcalá, accompanied the union leaders outside the Government Palace, when the shooting began.

He confirmed that the shots were directed at businessman Jesús García, known as "Don Chuy," who died from gunshot wounds when he arrived at the Parres Hospital in Cuernavaca.

"We regret the death of Jesús García. We sympathize with the injured people and we will be pending in order to provide all the information for the citizens, "he said.

In addition to the deceased businessman, the incident resulted in three injured people . Two of them are stable in the Parres Hospital and are treated for wounds in the lumbar and testicular region, respectively. The third wounded man is in a state of seriousness as he was shot in the jaw. Said person has been operated on in a hospital of the IMSS.

From the incident a person was arrested who was already put at the disposal of the authorities in Torre Morelos. The identity of the arrested shooter could not be revealed.

Derived from the testimonies, said the commissioner, it is hypothesized that there could be a second shooter, who would have fled. At this moment they perform the analysis of the videos of the event to validate or discard this supposition. Motive unknown.

He indicated that the governor, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, and the head of the governor's office, José Manuel Sanz, are aware of the facts and are in a private security meeting.

    If here in the US, some individuals are scared or don’t qualify to get a license to carry and don’t act when something occurs. I’ve lost hope for Mexican citizens trying to push gun laws!

  5. Killer's mom says put him in prison and keep him there, she had her husband killed about 20 years ago, the son must have grown believing gun toting murderers are the big shit.
