Humboldt County, CA: Largest Heroin Bust in Recent History Thanks to Mexican Cartels

Posted by Yaqui for Borderland Beat from: RedHeaded BlackBelt

Thanks to Kym for her tireless work and best local press !

NOTE: I know this seems like peanuts to those of us who read about hundreds of kilos, tons of mota and cocaine, meth and heroin; however, Mexican DTO's have wreaked havoc on small rural communities in Northern Ca, just like just about everywhere, it seems. This may be the largest bust in recent history, but it surely is not the first nor, hopefully, not the last. They have also brought their other evil violent ways with them too, ie more armed robberies, murders and drug addicts on the streets.

All Northern California's Law Enforcement Agencies have there hands full of Cartel grows too, which together with the heroin and crystal meth toll keeps everyone on their toes, including rural citizens who are now more prone to defending themselves against Illegal Searches and Seizures, racial profiling and, of course, Ripper Season.

After a year-long investigation, the Humboldt County Drug Task Force (HCDTF) arrests three subjects for heroin distribution. This is believed to be Humboldt County’s largest heroin seizure in recent history.  Big thanks to HCDTF too.

On October 28, 2018, Special Agents with the HCDTF, with the assistance of a narcotic detection K9 with the District Attorney’s Office, served multiple search warrants in Eureka.

This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

At approximately 5:45 p.m., agents contacted Carlos Sanchez-Gallego , age 63 from Mexicali, BC Mexico,  in his vehicle in the 800 block of West Harris Street, Eureka.

Sanchez-Gallego
Sanchez-Gallego:

Sanchez-Gallego was detained without incident and a search warrant for his vehicle was obtained. Upon serving the search warrant agents located nearly 9 pounds of heroin packaged for sales in a false compartment. This heroin has an estimated street value of approximately $270,000.

 Ochoa-Ayon
Ochoa-Ayon:

Gallego’s associate, Jose Ochoa-Ayon , age 40 from Sinaloa, Mexico, was also spotted driving a vehicle in the same area. Agents attempted to contact Ochoa-Ayon but he fled at a high rate of speed. Ochoa-Ayon drove in a reckless manner and at one point drove the wrong direction on Henderson Street. For public safety concerns agents did not pursue Ochoa-Ayon. A short time later, agents located Ochoa-Ayon’s vehicle parked in a nearby neighborhood. Ochoa-Ayon abandoned his vehicle and was subsequently located and detained by agents.

An additional associate, Gilberto Castello-Garcia  age 29 from Sinaloa, Mexico , was also contacted near his residence located in the 500 block of West Harris Street, Eureka. Castello-Garcia was detained without incident and a search warrant for his residence and vehicles was obtained. During the service of these search warrants, approximately 2 ounces of heroin packaged for sales was seized. Castello-Garcia was also in possession of a false compartment that contained nearly $35,000 in U.S. currency.

This currency is believed to be the proceeds of illegal narcotics sales and will be held pending asset forfeiture proceedings.

All three subjects were placed under arrest and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on the following charges:

Sanchez-Gallego:

H&S 11351 – Possession of a controlled substance for sales
H&S 11379(b) – Transportation of a controlled substance from one county to another noncontiguous county
H&S 11352(a) – Transportation of a controlled substance
H&S 11366.8(a) – Fabrication of a false compartment within a vehicle
VC 12500(a) – Driving unlicensed
PC 182 Criminal conspiracy to distribute heroin

Castello-Garcia:

H&S 11351 – Possession of a controlled substance for sales
H&S 11352 – Transportation of a controlled substance
H&S 11366.8(a) – Fabrication of a false compartment within a vehicle
PC 182 Criminal conspiracy to distribute heroin

Ochoa-Ayon:

Same as above with an additional VC 23103 charge ie, reckless driving

The bail for all three subjects was set at $500,000. Anyone with information related to this investigation or other narcotics related crimes are encouraged to call the Humboldt County Drug Task Force at 707-444-8095 or the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 707-268-2539.

  1. If I should enter an INM office and ask for a transit 15-day visa and not have a valid passport and thirty dollars or equivalent pesos to pay for the document I would get denied and possibly laughed at. Yet Mexico admitted wholesale thousands without the slightest vetting. The first thing a court does in the USA is to sieze a passport especially if the accused is charged with a violent crime. This is precisely why Mexico stopped accepting state certified birth certificates being valid for issuing an FMM tourist permit.

It would be embarrassingly foolish to believe single mothers as being hazardous immigrates. But it would be foolish to assume all males are innocent peregrinos. Mexico's ignorance is shown in it's lack of interest in producing federal identification cards with fingerprints and retinal eye scan. This is unforgivable. Mexican police remain ignorant and USA border patrol remains forever suspicious.

  2. Imo, this is the difference between sinaloa and cjng-
Sinaloa has been around for a long enough time, that they have small cells like this in a lot of small/hinky dink towns all over the usa..
I keep hearing cjng is taking over and blah blah blah- id really like to know how many cities/towns amd states they actually are working in..
I live in chicago, and they named mencho "public enemy #1" not to long ago- that was the first ive heard of cjng being here- and i thought atlanta was where they are based out of..

Im not a "fan" of either, or any. I just think its kinda funny that when chapo got popped, the feds lost any interest in continuing to go after sinaloa.. i havent heard anything about el mayo, caro etc.. its funny how that works..

    1. At least they got arrested, Bail is high, plus will be deported after they serve their sentences if Undocumented. Tip of the iceberg and not too far from Pelican Bay either.
Great takedown for Eureka. Plus they got another real bad cohort not long ago , but I lost him !

  5. Cells like these run in all parts of our communities. The demand for drugs is huge in America and in many parts of the world.
Image the magnitude of such operations in our country?

Can the DEA give an estimated number of cells operating in any city?
Only by cooperative means can law enforcement succeed.
Our cities and towns are riddled with drug trafficking. Drugs do not discriminate age, gender, ethnicity nor financial status.

If one truly looks (drugs) are in plain site everywhere. Its easier to purchase drugs than alcohol for anyone underage.

    3. yea; even more trouble if you get caught making those compartments, i know a guy got 5 years federal for putting those in,

    4. Most likely a hidden compartment is only a crime in California and other overly legislated states.

    5. In his book Ghost: My Thirty Years as an FBI Undercover Agent this guy mentions a story about these false compartments. He busted a compartment maker only to flip him for future busts. People kept seeking this designer out based off of his business cards. Like making $$$ was that damn easy. Great book. Highly recommended. - Sol Prendido

    3. Oh, haha......THAT’s what comes after Silly Season !
Lots of armed robberies, ripping off people’s crops when they are just about ready, or worse: after it’s processed ! And now a days they are usually armed and dangerous , usually but not always out of towners too.
Or worse yet, paranoid trimmers who assault the boss and take the product instead of waiting to be paid ! Lots of ugly scenarios out there and now it’s a year round season.

  9. The only 'good' thing that this bust REALLY changes is that some law-enforcement professional is now due for a promotion.

I grew better weed in Tacoma in my basement 20 yrs ago than any Humboldt, Mendicino, Coos, or Mexican weed ever grown. I sell $4.20 g's of Good outdoor organic, and can barely move it. I give it free to Medical Card holders.
