Mexico City:  The Special Prosecutor for the Attention of Crimes Committed against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE), presented formal accusation against Heriberto Picos Barraza, "El Koala" for his probable responsibility in the crime of homicide against the journalist Javier Valdez, in Sinaloa.

The Attorney General's Office (PGR), informed that this decision was made when the complementary investigation phase established by the Special District Judge in the Accusatory Criminal System of the Federal Criminal Justice Center in the state of Sinaloa concluded, in terms of Articles 334 and 335 of the National Code of Criminal Procedures.

"El Koala"
Heriberto Picos, "El Koala" is accused of being a material partner in the commission of the crime of homicide with premeditation and advantage against the communicator, on the occasion of his journalistic activity and his publications in various news media,
at regional and national levels.

According to the PGR, in accordance with the applicable legislation, the FEADLE requested the competent judge to impose the maximum sanction contemplated for this type of crime in the state of Sinaloa, of 50 years in prison.

The agent of the Public Ministry of the Federation will continue with the process of the criminal process against the probable responsible and of another person related to the process for the same facts.

Javier Valdez was founder of the weekly Ríodoce de Culiacán, Sinaloa, correspondent of the newspaper La Jornada and eventual contributor to the magazine Proceso and author of several books on the subject of Narcos and "narco- journalism".

"El Koala" , at the service of "El Mini Lic":

On April 24, Renato Sales Heredia, head of the National Security Commission (CNS), confirmed that the murder of journalist Javier Valdez Cárdenas is linked to various journalistic investigation works in which he covered issues such as drug trafficking and organized crime.

Days before his death, Valdez Cárdenas published journalistic works related to the criminal cell of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada García; something that later the co-founder of Riodoce, Ismael Boroquez, admitted was a bad decision and "a mistake" to have published something so dangerous for Javier, the ever uncompromising journalist.

In a press conference, Sales Heredia confirmed the detention of Heriberto Picos Barraza, "El Koala" , 26 years old, who works for Dámaso López Serrano, "El Mini Lic". "El Koala" is one of the three alleged murderers of the journalist, at noon May 15 of last year.

Sales Heredia confirmed that the arrest was made in El Pedregal de Santa Julia, located in Tijuana Baja California.

Dámaso López Núñez, "El Licenciado", who became one of the men closest to Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán after helping him in his escape from the Puente Grande prison in Jalisco in January 2001, was arrested on May 2 in Mexico City.

"El Lic and "El Mini Lic" are in the US awaiting their own trials and expected to testify against "El Chapo", their former business partner.
